Re: Mystery Neutral?

Could be the wire to the selector switch is rubbing somewhere and grounding occasionally or it could be the switch itself.

Re: Will coils from a K3 be good for a KZ?

I don't think you can use the Dodge Neon coils on the 1000's . They measure 0.6 ohms, which would be a 20 Amp current draw, per side. Standard coils are 3 ohms, which gives a 4 Amp draw, but that would reduce even more if you take the ballast resistor into account too. Maz A neon coil draws 14 amps...

You just put it in the hole in either half and put the 2 halves together.

Re: carb question: where did this spacer come from?

There should be a lock washer, like the one in your picture, a metal flat washer, a nylon flat washer and a nylon sleeve that fits over the screw. If the tab that depresses the pump rod is not resting on the rod at idle then you might bend it and make it work better. If it's already touching it will...

Re: Footpegs for 1800

Mic-O-pegs are worth every penny once you try them and get a set that fits you. The come in several configurations so sometimes you have to send the arms back and try something else. Don't think that would work out well in Australia. When I decided to order some I set the bike on the center stand an...

It's off one of the linkages, I would guess the choke linkage.

. I checked the battery and it was 13.5V. As soon as I connected the positive the voltage went down to 10V. No lights came on nothing not even a click.
I would bet on a bad battery. And always connect the positive first, negative last.

Re: Starter by-pass

Just so I have this straight, are you saying that I could depress the start button to flash the headlight, with the bike stopped, engine running, and the clutch lever "in", without it engaging the starter. Just as if I were stopped at a stop sign, and I wished to flash my headlight at a vehicle acr...

Re: Starter by-pass

You are correct, using the start button to flash the lights is a commonly used signal. There is no "flywheel" to engage so even if the starter did engage when you push the button while running it won't hurt anything, the over running clutch will just free wheel.

Re: Starter not disengaging 78 gl1000

Ok. I forgot to mention I did unplug the two small wires on the starter solenoid because I thought the ignition button on the handle bar might be stuck and that was probably what they go to... I was checking the stator because of my recharging problem but I'm 80% sure it's just the plugs just wante...

Re: Starter not disengaging 78 gl1000

Disconnect the small wires going to the starter solenoid. If it still trys to run on the solenoid is stuck. It has nothing to do with the stator, rectifier or regulator. It's not the fault of the starter either.

Re: At what point?????

I was able to dig into the bike a little bit today. I was initially told that the start solenoid was bad. So I pulled the left side cover off and had a look. The connector to the solenoid was not connected. And rightly so..... the plastic is melted around the two red wires. That is red flag 1. A li...

If there is a bad ground it is probably the main ground point on the frame under the gas tank.

Re: 1983 Gl1100 aspencade fan wiring

You only have 2 wires, a green and a black, both go into the switch connector and come from the 6 pin connector that comes off the main harness, the black one goes in and out of the fan motor.

Re: Wiring of after market headlight

If you look inside the box between the forks (fairing weight), you will find a regular headlight connector and the rest of the wires connected to the fairing harness. The wires from the speed sensor are in a 3 pin connector & are Bl/Br, Bl/y , G/Bl but I don't know the purpose of each. In a 4 pin co...

Just playing devils advocate here, but is it possible that different States used different lamps (ie California models had bulbs and others had sealed beam)? Don't worry about those compression #s, they are pretty even and it hasn't been ran in a long time so they will come up.
Yes, you are probably going to have to clean the carbs. You would be way luckier than me if you didn't.

I think I found the nut on the alternator (right above where the starter goes in right?) but after pulling the plugs, it doesn't seem to want to turn even though it is a little tight in the area. Re: H4 LED replacement bulb

Don't care what it shows. The US models were sealed beam. I wish they were not as I wanted to go LED myself but could not do it as it is a sealed beam unit. I didn't get that from a foreign web site. Find for me anywhere that shows a sealed beam headlight. https://www.cmsnl.com/honda-gl1000-usa_mod...

Not sure what would happen if the battery was somehow connected backward but a possibility. I bought a new battery online that had the terminals reversed and no markings. Otherwise it could only be a bad rectifier.

If yours is a sealed beam it is not the original headlight.
I bought the bike brand new, original headlight still installed.
