Re: Timing Belts help

I wouldn't put the red loctite on them. You will have a heck of a time getting them loose next time. If you must use loctite, go with the blue. I didn't put any locking compound on mine and never have, but its your call.

Re: Dash lights stay on when key in "lock" position

I don't use the park position of the switch either, but I believe that only the tail light is supposed to be left on when in that position.

Good stuff Doug. Looks like you are well on your way to some needed maintenance. I'll bet that old sub air filter crumbled in your hands when you started handling it.

Re: Rear car tire for GL1500SE tug

I don't run a car tire on mine so I don't know about that. I have read on here where a lot of the guys that do run them are running around 40 psi in them. One way to tell would be to get the tire wet and see what the track looks like. Or maybe put a chalk mark across it and see what it looks like af...

Re: Rear car tire for GL1500SE tug

According to my calculations, that tire is about .9 inch shorter than the stock tire and it travels forward about 5.7 inches less per revolution of the tire than stock. So yes, you should feel some quicker acceleration with that tire on there. You will notice that you are turning more rpms at any gi...

Re: Ignition key

No, nothing special, except they work. I had one made at the local hardware store but it would not work in my bike. It seems to be hit or miss when getting a key made from another used one. I'm glad the one you got made from your old one worked but mine did not so I went another route.

Re: Ignition key

Russell, what did the new key cost at the locksmith? I had some made at an online place. He made me two keys from the code on mine. It was about $30 I believe for those two keys.

That hose is not original to the bike. The one that came with it is a black hose, not coiled, and is about 3-4 feet long.

It’s my understanding they are HD74 or HD75 depending on left hand or right hand. It seems year model doesn’t matter.

Yes, the different numbers on the blank depend upon which type of key you have. You need to match your key with the blank.

My key blank is HD75. The slot is on the other side of the key when looking at it like your picture.

Re: Doug's Winter Maintenance Begins

You should pull the final drive out and lube the drive shaft splines and and the pinion joint where the drive shaft plugs into the final drive. All that should be painted with some Moly paste. I would do all that first and then when you have it back together, change out the final drive gear oil.

Re: Timing belts done.....

Glad you got it done. As you said, it is not a bad job but it just has to be done correctly or the consequences are are really bad. Be glad the gas leak was the petcock. If the fuel bowls were leaking, as mine was, that is a carbs out job and that is no fun.

I found this picture in the service manual. It is for the electrical troubleshooting and is showing the connectors, but I believe the junction you are looking for is in the picture.

It seems you have most all the items listed that should be checked while you have it torn down. You will need an 18 mm socket for the spark plugs.

Re: Honda Intercom or Bluetooth, what is better?

2 quick questions: 1. Will a Sena Freewire work with a GL1500? 2. Will a Sena Freewire pair with BT-S2 1000M headsets? Chief, I think the Freewire will work ok with the GL1500 but I don't believe it will pair with the BT-S2 unit. It only works with the Bluetooth 4.1 enabled Sena headsets according ...

Re: Honda Intercom or Bluetooth, what is better?

Questions regarding the Freewire: my wife and I have the BILT Techno 2.0 helmets from Cycle Gear with built-in Sena bluetooth, and they work great as an intercom system. When on group rides we can turn up the volume on the CB and listen to conversations through the bike's speakers, but can't talk o...

Re: How Are These Held On the Screw Head

That picture of the tab being removed is from the how-to article on replacing the cruise and sub air filters. I guess that is Scott's (WingAdmin) bike that is pictured. It appears to be the right screw. The very next picture in the article has a better view of it and it looks like the right one to me.

Re: How Are These Held On the Screw Head

It is just a friction fit that holds it on the screw head. That is a special screw though, not your average hardware store screw. The head fits inside the cover and it supposed to be held there by just pushing it on. They do get loose though, maybe by damage to either the screw or the plastic piece.

Re: led turn single bulbs

The resistor will need to be wired in parallel with the bulb, not in series like you have it. Here is a link to show how that is done.
