Re: Ride- Progressive Brand Springs-GL1100, no air added?

The progressive springs worked better than expected!

Side by side with the old springs - the progressive springs are about 2" shorter than the originals yet the bike sits 2.25" higher with the new progressive springs with no air added in both cases.

GL1100 Carburetor - Black plastic part - Banana clip

This is the black plastic piece found in the top of a GL1100 carburetor. I have two that are cracked in a set of carbs I'm cleaning for use.

Does anyone know if these are exactly the same as those found in the GL500 and GL650 ?

Thanks

Re: Ride- Progressive Brand Springs-GL1100, no air added?

I've probably done 30 fork seals on old Honda's in the last 6 years ......... I only let a spring fly on the first one!

Also, it's a great idea to let the air pressure out before removing the drain screw on the lower leg : )

Cheers!

Thanks for that info, it will be worth the 100 bucks not to pull the wheel, tubes, and so forth.

Cheers and Happy Thanksgiving!

Ride- Progressive Brand Springs-GL1100, no air added?

I have a 1983 GL1100 that I have brought back to life and put on the road. It is pretty nice survivor that had not been previously molested by uncaring wrenches. Anyway, I put new fork seals in which I’ve done many times before and the left leg leaks fork oil only if I add air to the front end. The ...

One of bikes came from the PO with a Headlight modulator - I stopped using it after a driver pulled out in front of me.............he claimed I blinked my lights to give him the "go-ahead".

The conversion looks well done. Propane was used to check for leaks and none found.

GL1000 fluctuating Idle with Single Carb conversion.

A good friend of mine who is not a member on this forum has a side car rig that he recently converted to a single carb due to issues with idle using the original 4 carbs. Currently with the single carb which is a Chinese knock-off of a VW carb – his bike has a fluctuating idle which cycles up and do...

Bruce - thanks! That will make the GL1100 blinkers an easy fix.

I'll get on it as soon as I return from a couple thousand miles on the ST1100 !

Thanks again.

Bruce - can you confirm the location of the turn signal control box? (It looks like you also have an 83 model)

Thanks

Re: 1983 GL1100 Self Cancelling Turn Signals shut off immediately

Thanks for that info, someone mentioned the box location but was not positive,

Does this sound like the location, "There is also a turn signal brain "box" that I believe is located on the right side harness, aft of the side cover (remove seat)."

Thanks!

Re: 1983 GL1100 Self Cancelling Turn Signals shut off immediately

Thanks for the info - I'll check those item.

I'll even be fine to eliminate/disable the "self-Cancel" part if needed after checking everything. I'd rather have to turn the blinkers off than fight them to keep blinking every time I use them.

1983 GL1100 Self Cancelling Turn Signals shut off immediately

The self cancelling turn signals do just that – they cancel as soon as I turn them on. (This is a bike I bought early this year and now have it back on the road and still a few bugs to work on) I can keep the signals blinking if I force and hold the signal switch with my thumb. It constantly pulsate...

Re: Has anyone on this forum ever actually had a OEM timing belt failure on GL1100?

As a matter of course I have changed the belts on all the old Goldwings I've bought. So far I see the failed NAPA belt but I don't see any that show an OEM failure. It's just a question for fun and quality of OEM parts. I posted this same question on the ST1100 owners forum a couple of years ago and...

Are 1983 GL1100 fork tubes the same as previous GL1100 model years?

I have a 1983 Goldwing that I’m bringing back to life and it needs one fork tube. I wonder if all year GL1100 fork tubes are the same or is the 1983 tube different as the legs are not the same as earlier years. Does anyone have a good smooth fork leg to sell or trade? (I replaced the seals and thoug...

I think the unit in 1981 only went to 80mph so I'd be looking for a 1983 gl1100 speedometer which goes back to higher numbers.

Re: 1983 GL1100 fork seal circle clips have broken off ends where removal tool holes should be.

I took my longest round punch and went to the middle of the clip and beat it down as there is a tapper on the down side of the leg only the top side is flat where the clip sits. Once I pushed the middle down I was able to get a flat blade behind it and pry it out. This work on both and was easier th...

Re: 1983 GL1100 fork seal circle clips have broken off ends where removal tool holes should be.

One thought I have it to use a dremel tool and cut through the clips in the middle via cutting through the fork leg. This would leave two half pieces that I could pry out and might leave me in the position of needed a good set of lower fork legs. Another thought is to burn the seals out and maybe I ...

1983 GL1100 fork seal circle clips have broken off ends where removal tool holes should be.

I’m working on making a 1983 GL1100 road worthy again. I have cleaned the carbs and replaced all 4 ACV’s and accelerator pump, then synced the carbs. She starts and runs super smooth. So far this bike appears to be unmolested and pretty much appears that a wrench has seldom been on the bike which is...
