Re: 1500 Trailer Hitches

Depending on what insurance systems are like in your area, the "rebuilt" title MAY not be anything to worry about, particularly in full-fairing bikes like the 'Wing. Case in point - my previous bike was a Kawasaki Concours 1000. I had a crash when a deer leaped out of the bush (no shoulder on the r...

Re: Cost and Source for 1999 Goldwing Front Fender

Yes, my Valkyries had the same exact issue... crank but wouldn't fire... I dunno, though... this one just didn't seem to have that problem.

However, we shall shortly find out... the seller is taking the bike to the shop today for repairs.

Thanks for the info, gents.

Re: Cost and Source for 1999 Goldwing Front Fender

Thanks for all the great information, gents. I went and visited the bike yesterday. Indeed, a '99 with a fair number of bells and whistles on it. Here's a pic of it. It has 80,000 on the odometer. bike.png Only... it wouldn't start... turned over fine. Guy said it had been sitting in the warehouse f...

Re: 1500 Trailer Hitches

I was contemplating buying this motorcycle until I discovered it had a rebuilt title. Now, rebuilt is better than salvage, and, the owner was unable to tell me why the bike had a rebuilt title and could only say that it "rides fine". As for the hitch, my intention is to attach a mounting plate so th...

Thanks to all for the great info, and especially to baba67... looks like the right stuff. Still trying to get a viewing for this bike. PS: I enjoy the friendly folks on this board, always willing to help. While I've other boards that may have more posting volume, they don't have the same sense of co...

Cost and Source for 1999 Goldwing Front Fender

Title pretty much says it all. Bike is being advertised as needing "fender and fork cover". I'm going to look at it tomorrow... would like to know the cost to recreate per the pics.

Thank you.

1500 Trailer Hitches

Is anyone able to tell me anything about the hitch attached to this motorcycle? I've not been able to find much about it.

OK - I've figured out it's a Markland... no longer made. Now, I can't find specs. Max tongue weight, max trailer weight, etc.

Thank you.

Compression Leak? Sayeth the Man...

What say ye? In my ̶v̶a̶s̶t̶ limited experience, a cylinder(s) that won't hold compression has ring problems or valve problems, maybe even head gasket issues, and either way, it's an expensive repair. This fellow says "compression leak" and I wonder if you all can put on your "Click and Clack, Tappe...

Re: Avon Cobra, Dunlop Elite 4, other?

If you decide to put Avon Cobra's on, stay away from the radial rears. Your bike calls for bias ply anyway, but some people still put radials on a 1500. Unless Avon has fixed the problems with the radial Cobra's, they are prone to tread seperation. There are many posts about this and I am one of th...

Radial or Bias Ply for a 1500 Wing?

Gawd, I hope this isn't like asking, "What's the best brand of oil?" On all three of my Valkyries, I exclusively ran radial tires. In fact, unless one were to go out of brand recommendations, only radials were available from Avon, Metzeler, and Dunflop. I'm seriously thinking about pulling the trigg...

Re: Is This 93 SE Worth a Look?

I contacted the owner. No flooding, he says. About 50,000 on the odometer. But he has no idea why the bike has different colored bags, nor does he have any idea of the history of the bike. To quote: We got the bike 3 months ago. The man passed away and his wife sold it. Definitely moving along now.

Re: Is This 93 SE Worth a Look?

Look at everything you might need/want to replace, and add up the costs. Those costs, plus the cost of the bike, needs to be well below what you could buy a running one for. I've done many "projects" over the years. Unless you have a connection for good deals on parts, OR, it's the bike of your dre...

Is This 93 SE Worth a Look?

Hasn't run in five years. Asking $1000. Any particular things one would want to check out on a bike sitting for five years? I reckon I'd pull the plugs and squirt oil, let sit, before turning it over. Bring a battery charger and jumper cables as well. I'd expect it wouldn't start without fresh plugs...

Re: Removing Spark Plug Valence Cover?

SilverDave, After much gnashing of teeth, girding of loins, and careful examination of chicken guts, I have decided to go with a 1500. It was a tough decision, and the following factors came into play. While I had considered the weight differential between a 1200 and a 1500 as something that would m...

Too Good to Be True?

I'm really searching for a 1500 to meet my price range needs but an 1800 came up in my search... a 2002... 40,000 miles... "immaculate"... clear title... $3700. On sale since June.

Does this sound too good to be true? It does to me.

Thoughts appreciated.

Costs/DIY Difficulty for Repair Items?

Looking at a 1200. Slight leak in a fork seal... I can see this is going to be a repair item not too far down the road. Is this a DIY item? Relatively easy? Special tools required? Parts costs? How much does a competent mechanic in the Houston, Texas are charge to do the repair job, end to end? Item...

I'm looking at a red/burgundy/maroon GL 1200 and now I hear the blue ones are faster? I dunno, I just dunno.

Is the 1200 the Right Bikes? Was - Re: Removing Spark Plug Valence Cover?

It looks pretty skookum from that small pic. SilverDave I'm experiencing cognitive dissonance! I had originally decided on a 1200 because I wanted to avoid the weight of a 1500 Wing... my Valk weighed in around 780 wet, if I recall. Then, I read a number of articles and threads about comfort levels...

yes the cover needs to come off to get at the spark plugs, there is small bracket at the top of the cover, unscrew the single screw there and with abit of wingle to the left it will come off. just heads up stuff a rag or something in the crack between the timing belt cover and the engine, screws di...

Removing Spark Plug Valence Cover?

Apologies for a dumb question: Considering purchasing an 87 Aspencade, 47,000 miles. But, it runs on 3 cylinders at idle, seems to have power at speed. _Probably_ carb problems, and, I want to do a compression test before buying. How does this valance cover come off (pic below)? I think if I get tha...

Re: Manual Switch for Radiator Fans?

Outstanding information, Rednaxs60 (thanks, too, to CrystalPistol)! I have some things to check out. The seller has let me ride the bike so getting it up to temperature and then checking thermostatic control won't be a problem. I rode it for several miles, when I got back the temp gauge was about 6 ...

Manual Switch for Radiator Fans?

Looking at a 87 Aspencade to purchase. Seller showed me a rocker switch on upper right part of inner fairing, used to turn radiator fans on and off. Given that I've always (and only) seen thermostatically controlled fan switches, why would someone have done this? Gives me an uncomfortable feeling th...

1200 Carbs and Carb Repair

I'm a Honda Valkyrie guy who has decided to purchased a 1200. The Valk as 6 carbs, the Wing 1500 have 2 carbs, and do I understand correctly that an 87 Apsencade will have 4 carbs. If yes, maybe the bike I am looking at is the one I want. It's been sitting for a while, excellent condition for it's a...
