Re: horn indicators and bang

You need to check all wires and connections for tightness and corrosion, including the fuse connections, all grounds and switches, especially the ignition and kill switches. I'm guessing that the bangs you mentioned are from the exhaust? If so, it is probably backfiring due to poor connections in th...

Re: 1981 GL1100 will not run

If all 4 cylinders are firing (get it running as well as possible for a few seconds then quickly touch each exhaust header to see if any are cold i.e. that cylinder ISN'T firing) and the plugs are sooty black, it's either too much fuel OR not enough air. Check air filter and choke operation.

Re: Radiator Cap or something else....

As the water heats up and expands, it should go into the expansion tank and then as it cools, it gets drawn back out again. It's the system pressure that prevents boiling (13psi approx) so if the radiator cap is leaking, the pressure is low so the water boils and comes out where the leak is. It's a ...

Re: Radiator Cap or something else....

If it's coming out of the radiator cap, the cap or seal may be suspect. If pressure is getting past the cap as the coolant heats up , the coolant will boil.

It certainly sounds like hydrolock to me. Do NOT try to force it to turn over, as that will result in bent rods & other really, really bad engine damage.
I would agree... If he hadn't said he's taken the plugs out.

Re: LOCKED UP! HELP!

Is the back wheel free to rotate at all? If not, check rear brake . There should be SOME movement in the wheel even if the engine is locked up.

Re: Thoughts on Color Tune

I use one to set the idle mixture on all of my bikes. It can be used to see the mixture at any revs, but obviously you can't adjust mixture at higher revs without changing jets etc. It will allow you to compare mixtures from one cylinder to another so you can see if one or more is running rich or le...

Re: Idle drop vs colortune

I use a Colortune on all of my bikes. It's a very useful tool and sets the idle mixture perfectly. If you have access to a very accurate tacho, the idle drop method is just as accurate, but, as I don't have access to one, my PERSONAL preference is Colortune.

Re: NGK Resistor Caps Installation

The old caps simply unscrew from the plug wires and the new ones are screwed on in their place, fitting the smaller diameter rubber boot to the wire first. the larger rubber fits on the plug end of the cap, to create a waterproof seal round the plug insulator. If you look in the smaller hole in the ...

Re: Bogs when clutch released.

Carbs were rebuilt and synced. Still knocks when taking off and at idle. However smooth during acceleration with no knock or hesitation. Only at idle around 1,000rpms or less. Headlight issue is resolved ( it was the bulb). Brakes are still having issues. Probably needing to replace the original li...

Hey, Carbs been off and even managed to get the idle jet out of the carb that was over the cylinder that has a Spark, but isn't firing. I thought cleaning the carbs may have sorted this. Here's whats happening... Idling ok now, starts first time and after cleaning carbs (again!!) throttle seems mor...

wow! had good spark prior to sending out the carbs to be rebuilt.. now no spark with the ignition switch on and the other switch in run.. no spark to the plugs. what have I done that would keep t he plugs from firing? Possibly disturbed a coil connection. Easily done when removing/refitting the air...

Re: Points

So is it wired that the person before me left the condenser hooked up? Apologies.... I answered thinking about the ballast resistor! The condenser may have been left connected by accident. It is not required with electronic ignition. It's purpose is to suppress arcing across the points, which would...

Re: Struggling with carb3/plug3

If the plug is wet with fuel but the fuel isn't igniting, I would guess there is insufficient air or too much fuel. Possibly the idle air circuit is totally plugged up. Are the jets in that carb the same as the other 3 ?

Re: Points

If the coils are the originals, the ballast resistor would probably be left connected with electronic ignition (they don't take to kindly to being fed with a constant 12v, hence the resistor is only bypassed during starting to get a stronger spark). If Dyna coils are fitted, the resistor is not requ...

Re: Points

You should have a black/white to each coil, which is 12v feed from ignition switch and a yellow to one coil and a blue to the other. The other end of the yellow and blue goes to the points. Search Google for GL1000 wiring diagram or there may be one in the 'Manuals' section at the top of the page on...

Re: LED lights

You need to install loading resistors on the LED'S , or, for the directionals, replace the flasher unit with one suitable for LED's. LED'S draw less current than filament bulbs, so there is less load on the flasher unit, hence the fast flash. Likewise, the tail light monitor expects to see a higher ...
