Re: Starting issue, grinding?

Okay checked the starter planetary, everything looked fine, nothing obviously wrong, or worn. I cleaned it up and greased it up. I managed to get it to start and let it run for about 15 minutes, and still the same thing. I added about 5oz of Seafoam, and it's still doing the same thing. I'm thinkin...

I found a video on YouTube that sounds just like my starter.

So what is my problem?
Sounds like the sprag clutch isn't engaging, as suggested above.

Re: Dyna Beads VS Ride on Tire balancing

I'm intrigued why you are so anti Slime in motorcycle tyres. It's designed for that purpose and I run it in my FJ1200 quite happily. It has saved me from a flat twice, as discovered on my weekly tyre check when I found 2 screws in the rear tyre. Just make sure the tyre fitter is aware that Slime is...

Re: Dyna Beads VS Ride on Tire balancing

DO NOT USE SLIME IN MOTORCYCLE TIRES  i AM A FIRM BELIEVE IN RIDE ON. Have used it years. You do need to check your tires often for objects stuck in them. Sounds like your battery has given up. Is the charging system working? If so, time for a new battery.

Re: Restoration started

This has to be a personal choice. What are you going to use the bike for when it's finished? If you plan on long trips, maybe with a passenger, then you'll undoubtedly see the benefit of the luggage space. If just using it for fun rides and day trips, you probably won't use the luggage capacity. Per...

Re: Restoration started

In case anyone is reading this,I completed sealing my gas tank last week and it turned out very good. All surfaces had a nice coating on them. I especially like the fact that the epoxy is almost scent free, no suffocating lacquer type oder. After the inside of the tank was done, I sanded and primed...

Could also just be some residual PB blaster/diesel etc in the exhaust system. As the exhaust warms up after a few minutes, it's burning off. Might be worth letting it run til it's fully warmed up and seeing if it clears.

+1 on the above, but do a compression check too. Could be a poorly seated valve.

Re: New and engine help needed

I would guess you have a blockage in a carb. Loosen the drain screw on the carb for the non-running cylinder. If no fuel comes out, you have a problem with the float or needle valve. If the bike hasn't been run for a while, the carbs would probably benefit from a complete strip/clean. Also, if you d...

Thanks for the explanation, Wingadmin. Kind of like our V5 (registration document), which gets sent back to our DVLA by the seller, then a new one issued to the buyer.
Apologies, Apex, for the brief hijack of your thread.

There's a club down here in South East England called the SLUTS (South London Union of Trikers). Some of their Trikes look similar to the above, but even more unsafe and 'ratty'! Most of them are adorned with skulls and the like. I give them a VERY wide berth!

I hear what you're saying. You know what the weather in England is like! I remove mine every year, rub them down and repaint them with wood stove paint. Still on the originals but some day I'll have to take the expensive route.

As I posted previously, the early black horseshoe ones are being re-manufactured by another company to very high standards, but a bit 'spendy'. Having said that, if my original '75 ones ever need replacing, I'll find the money.

Re: Are we done here....?

As standard, one coil fires plugs 1and 2 (front right is 1, front left is 2) and the other coil fires 3 and 4 (rear right is 3, rear left is 4). If number 2 is the cylinder you are having issues with, swap the wires over from 1 and 2. If the problem moves to number 1 cylinder, you have a problem in ...

Move wires? You mean change the firing sequence??
Swap the wires and plugs on cylinders #1 and #2 (the front two). They both fire from the same coil so it won't affect the firing order, but if the fault moves to #1, you likely have a faulty coil or plug.

edit: i just realised that my description can be misleading. i am getting 12v from the feed wire. when static timing i get no test light. when i crank the engine, the test light flashes as if the dynatek unit is working properly. when i turn the engine by hand, the test light does not come on at al...

Hi, A few months back, I was riding my GL1000 and my timing belt broke. Now after installing new valves and hopefully getting the valve timing correct.
