Check the fuel filter. Is it clogged?

Re: Recent restoration rides like CRAP. Help!

When you strip the forks to replace the seals, check how the sliders move on the stanchions with no oil or springs in them. They should slide easily and both exactly the same. If they take a bit of effort and then suddenly slide, that's the problem. Strip them completely and check the sliding surfac...

Re: Recent restoration rides like CRAP. Help!

Okay guys, (and gals) I’ve recently completed a full restoration on my 77 GL, and I’ve put around 1300 miles on it. It is a JOY to ride for the most part. However, since day one the forks have been “off”. They seem to work just fine over big bumps, and they compress normally when you hit the front ...

Re: 1975 GL1000 flooding rough running

If the carbs are flooding, you likely have a problem with the needle valve seats. Did you measure the float height with the floats just touching the needle spring NOT compressing it. This is easier to measure with the carbs standing on end. When you replaced the floats, did you check the tips of the...

Are they not the little spacers that fit between the muguard (fender?) and the mounting stay?

I just bought Hagon Progressives for my FJ1200 and the paperwork clearly states closer coils go at the top.

Re: Carb sync

Carb sync is synchronising the amount of vacuum at each cylinder. Jet size won't affect this. When you sync the carbs, you are ensuring that each throttle plate is open the exact same amount and therefore the airflow through each carb Venturi is the same.

Re: Rev increase issue when Idle

In the video, when it first starts, it's not firing on 4 cylinders, hence the knocking sound and low idle. When all 4 cylinders cut in, the revs rise and it smooths out (as you would expect). My guess is the carbs need revisiting. It's possible a couple of the idle circuits are blocked and the affec...

Shutting down "all of a sudden" is electrics/ignition. If it were a fuel problem, it would cough and splutter first.

Re: coils

Not sure what 'stab ons' are, but if you have 12v on one side of coils, check that the other side is grounded when the points close. Check also that the points are opening and closing as spark is generated when the points open.

Re: Power loss

Check the main fuse to see if it has blown or is corroded. It may also develop a crack in the filament that can't be seen. Check volts on each end of fuse to be sure - should be battery voltage on each end.

Re: Inaccurate Speed on Speedometer

I will trust the GPS reported speed a whole lot more, than any "trip elapsed time" over a measured mile course. the GPS signals are timed to the nano-second, not so the throttle on your patrol car, no one can hold it at a specified speed accurately over more than a few seconds. Radar are ...

Re: Inaccurate Speed on Speedometer

GPS speed is supposed to be extremely accurate, however, I've found this not to always be the case. I work with Police Vehicles and part of my job used to be installing speed detection systems. These work by measuring time and distance and had to be calibrated at the start of every shift, to take in...

Re: look at these gl1000 carbs

Are you saying that if you look into the carb throat, you can see the oversized hole at the base by the throttle plate? If so, then yes, I would be concerned. You could do worse than PM 'Old Fogey'. He owns Wingovations and has stripped/repaired more of these carbs than I have had hot dinners. It ma...

I had to use this method myself. Sharp drill bit, nice and slow and a bit of tape round the bit to mark the maximum depth that you want.

Re: look at these gl1000 carbs

I believe they are the starting point for some of the internal drillings. Various jets / holes will be joined by them but the starting point for the drilling is blanked off. That's as I understand it, but happy to be corrected if I've misunderstood.

Re: look at these gl1000 carbs

I'm gonna guess that someone has stripped those carbs before and, as that puck was difficult to remove, they drilled it to use a screw to get it out, but drilled too deep.

Progress... with the sending unit out, if I jumper the sender body to a KNOWN working ground, jumper the post of the sender to the wire, and heat up the sender with my mini torch, the gauge works. So how the heck am I going to get the sender to ground when it’s in the block? There is no ground in t...
