Re: Annual Gathering Lessons

Another area that had some confusion was GPS. Routes were generated using Kurviger. I found Basecamp and MapQuest to be too difficult to use and a general pain in the ass, especially when a simple route is to be made. Kurviger is browser based and very easy to use. It generates standard GPX files fo...

Re: Annual Gathering Lessons

I just to make it clear that AZ is referring to a ride during the summer and not the Gathering. We didn't have CBs for the leader and sweeper. He does however make some very good points. That is why before a group leaves, leaders spend a few minutes going over safety rules, what to expect and routes...

Annual Gathering Lessons

In an effort to make subsequent Gatherings better, I am starting this thread. Each Gathering gets better as we learn lessons from the rides. This year (3rd) we broke the attendees into three groups, making them more manageable. Having a group spread out over a mile made it difficult to keep everyone...

Re: Toyota Rav 4

Yes the Rav 4 will be able to tow the bike. Keep in mind though, it lacks the power to fly over the WV mountains at 75MPH. Downshift if you need to to and don't over stress the motor. I pulled my bike from NY to TN with a Tacoma (4 Cyl). When I hit the mountains was when I wished I have the 6 cyl mo...

Re: Fourth Annual GoldwingDocs Gathering - Sep 2020

One of the "problems" we had on the 3rd Gathering was the weather. For the past three years we kind of "pushed" the envelope and last year we got bit. Mornings was great for riding but afternoons saw rain every day. Weather also forced us to cancel the Little Switzerland route and instead we went to...

Re: Fourth Annual GoldwingDocs Gathering - Sep 2020

Checking on motels in the Tazwell area and in the Marion/Wytherville areas.
Will have something definite first week in November.

Date may change to August for better weather. But pencil in for the Claw and Back of the Dragon! Looks like fun riding.

Re: Arai Signet-X Helmet

Uh... that's what I thought. I couldn't see how the sun visor could be down with the clear visor open. That is a deal killer for me as I ride in hot areas. Without ventillation I will pass out
Thanks for the responses.

Re: Arai Signet-X Helmet

No Snell lid has an internal visor. They won't even test any. Shoei made one where they expanded the shell for it but Snell would not test it. Also if you install speakers it is no longer Snell certified. That's just the way it is, no parts allowed inside. But that's not the question. Can I have th...

Re: Arai Signet-X Helmet

Scott, another question... Does this helmet have an internal sunscreen? I know Aria makes visors but the sunscreen is on the exterior of the clear screen. How do I or can I use the exterior sunscreen with the clear screen in the up position? Like on a hot Ohio summer day, I need the clear screen up ...

Will have routes for the Claw and Back of the Dragons....

Re: Arai Signet-X Helmet

Scott,
How is this helmet in the rain? My Scorpion lets water on the inside of the exterior shield keeping me from seeing safely. In the rain this can be the difference between alive and dead.

Re: Third Annual GoldwingDocs Gathering - Sep 11-15, 2019

As it turns out Corky, the Wise/Tazwell VA area is being considered for the next location. It is close to the northern part of the Blue Ridge Parkway as well as the Claw of the Dragon. CB is being investigated but the cost to implement and integrate into rider's existing comm systems is pricey and ...

Re: Third Annual GoldwingDocs Gathering - Sep 11-15, 2019

I did have a friend from Maryland tell me that he and his son rode the entire Blue Ridge Skyway (489 miles) in 2014 and, since everyone I talked to at the gathering liked the portion of it that we rode, maybe such a trip might be an option to consider for next year. As it turns out Corky, the Wise/...

Re: Third Annual GoldwingDocs Gathering - Sep 11-15, 2019

Brian, What is the torn up tire from? Hope it was not your trailer. Great pictures. It was a great time and great riding. Looking forward to next year! Em Fortunately Em it wasn't my trailer tire. It was a fellow biker who was traveling to TN when the tire shreded. I helped change the tire in VA af...
