Re: 78 foot gear selector hits exhaust, cannot downshift
There is a dot on the shift lever and a dot on the shaft. Do they line up?

Re: Carb issues?
When my 78 was leaking gas at the exhaust, I found gas pooling in the plenum. Have you checked that? Can be a hazardous situation. I ended up pulling the carbs and doing a complete rebuild with Randakk's Kit.

If you use air, stuff a rag over the Piston so it doesn't go flying across the shop

Re: Electrical
On my 78 there is a 4 pin connector behind the headlight that connects the flasher to the lights and also two grounds to the light bucket bolts. Don't know if a 77 is similar but mine were corroded enough that I replaced that connector and the ground connections

Re: Wiring harness fried
Just to follow up, I pulled the old wrapping off the new (used) harness, checked all connections, checked continuity, re-wrapped and installed it and it worked! I had to replace a couple of plug connectors, and a few bad wires in the sub harnesses that needed repair. I spent a lot of time reading th...

Re: hondaline luggage keys
You don't need to take pictures on my account, I'm sure there are better ways for you to get grins and giggles. I've gotten a lot of help on this forum and I thought I would try to return the favor, just had a hunch the locksmith I use might be able to track it down. I think instead I am complicatin...

Re: hondaline luggage keys
I sent the pic to my locksmith, and he said he's narrowing down and asked for a picture of the other side of the key as well. Just to confirm - it's for an 81 GL1100 correct?

Re: hondaline luggage keys
Post a picture of the key. My locksmith is close to work, I can show it to him next time I pass by there and see what he thinks.

Re: hondaline luggage keys
Is the issue that you guys know what the key blank is, but can't find it? If that's the case I can check with an old timey lock smith by me who copied my ignition key, just let me know what the blank number is.

Rear rim sizes?
My rear rim is bent, so it does not run true. The disc runs through the caliper just fine, but the rim itself wobbles about 1/8 inch or so at its outer edge, and the wobble is more pronounced at the tire. My rim is stamped "D.I.D Japan MT 2.50 x 17". I found a guaranteed straight rim on ebay, also f...

Re: Wiring harness fried
I'm really thinking about doing that. At a minimum I'm going to pull the old wrapping off so I can make sure everything is in good shape. Are all those same wire colors easy to find? I've determined my rectifier is shot, and I was reading about replacing it with a regulator/rectifier and eliminating...

Thanks for the advice. I ordered a 40 year old harness because I couldn't find a new one. Are you aware of a source for a new one?

Re: Wiring harness fried
I've ordered a harness from ebay, it should get here next week. I'm a novice when it comes to electric but I think I can handle it. I've been reading and re-reading WingAdmin's Electric 101 posts as well (thanks for that). Is there anything I should be doing now, before the new harness gets here? An...

Re: Wiring harness fried
The relay was installed so the regulator could read the voltage directly from the battery. Actually the wire coming from the harness, connected to the relay, and that relay wire are completely fried. The connector between those wires melted off.

Wiring harness fried
Hi, I was out riding today when all of a sudden the bike shut down and started smoking. I've ridden about 500 miles so far this year with no issues. Looks like I really fried the wiring harness, I was able to trailer it home and take pictures. I don't know why this happened or how, but here are some...

I just want to say thank you to virgil, and everyone else who chimed in to help. This is my first GL1000, and last year it wasn't even running. Now, it's ready to be my companion as often as I can get out on the road. I did all the work myself thanks to people like you who populate this forum. That ...

Re: Stator Numbers
One question - if I want to test it first by jumping a wire from the black wire at the regulator to the positive terminal at the battery, can I just stick the test wire in the back side of the regulator plug, or do I need to cut the existing black wire and splice my test wire to that?
Thanks,
Ed

Ed

Re: Stator Numbers
To get the battery voltage back down at a high rpm and avoid boiling the battery... Add a simple relay "fix" to the black wire feeding the regulator. Cut this wire a few inches from the connector. Use the harness side to operate the relay...It will need a ground. Attach a fused (5 amp) #18 wire fro...

Stator Numbers
HI, 78 GL1000. I did some research in the forums, and I'd like to run these numbers by you and see what it tells you about the status of my charging system. At idle, 1100 rpm, I'm showing 14.6 volts at battery. At 3000 rpm I'm showing 15.10 volts. If I test the black regulator to positive battery te...

i know this is 5 years later, but thought i'd ask how you made out with the old bike........sounds like the one i dragged home in boxes about 3 years ago. took me two years to put it back together, but i ended up with a really sweet ride that i believe will be the last bike i ever own. it does ever...
