Re: New guy from Tennessee

I had a similar issue with my bike's seat, took it to a reupholster to reshape the foam, add some firmer foam to raise the height a bit and recover with new waterproof vinyl. Cost about $400, and I'm happy with the final product as it looks original.

Re: Don't believe it when they tell you....

Lots of tricks to employ to ensure work has been done such as marking you oil filter, old trick from many years ago. Interesting to read the part about marking the oil filter, unfortunately my GL1100 uses an internal oil filter, as well as my Toyota Highlander and my Volvo S60. I don't think any se...

Re: Do you wear your " Helmet "

My problem with it is that I would go through more CO2 cartridges than gasoline, because I would NEVER remember to unclip that damn tether before I got off the bike!! I wear the Helite air bag vest when touring. I do on occasion forget to tether the vest, so I have attached a 'buckle-up' sticker in...

303 Aerospace Protectant, its good to use on leather and vinyl covers, look it up. I use it on both bikes and leather seats in converible cars (and convertible tops).

Per the owner's manual for a GL1100: Maximum is 60W (5 Amps) (12V). Not sure about your bikes potential.

Typically all steel lines for brake application are 3/16 inch outside diameter (4.76mm), this applies to most motorcycles and cars/trucks.

Re: Barn find fuel issue

There are instructions how to remove and clean/rebuild the carbs, for 'oldwings' you may find informative. But you will need to remove the carburetors off the bike first, then synchronize them after reinstalling them back on the bike.

Best of luck.

Re: Bike keeps stalling

Before doing anything, have you battery tested by a shop, like PartSourse or similar. I'm not sure I would say your battery charging system is an issue by the numbers you provided last.

Re: Bike keeps stalling

The bike will still require the battery to be fully functional (charged) even when the bike is already running. The charging system typically works when the RPMs are above a certain level, like say over 2,000, so when you are idling (when stopped at a light) you are discharging the battery. Put the ...

Re: Suspension questions

For my '83 I've replaced the air shocks with Hagons on the rear and straight springs (with gold valve emulators) for the front. This has improved the ride for me markedly. Using straight springs on the front for me was key as you know what you are getting as the springs compress, with progressives t...

Re: TIMING BELT REPLACEMENT

Yes you can move the pulley by hand, I had to after my effort at tying it in place failed (too much slack). But you need to make sure you have the new belt behind the coat hanger for the belt swap.

Regarding that spare dog bone fuse, most likely who put the copper wire on, didn't know that the spare fuse existed.

Also, I don't like the way the copper wire appears to be touching the other metal part on the left side. Replace the wire with the dog bone fuse and see what happens.

Re: Need help, bike won't start

If you have a manual (shop) there is a procedure for testing the solenoid using a DMM. BTW, the copper wire across the 30A connectors you should replace with the dog bone fuse, I can see you have a spare dog bone fuse located in the fuse holder (below the copper wire).

Re: Worn final drive -83 1100A

Somewhere on this site is a recommendation to dump half the fluid in the rear end hub and add enough to fill with Lukas Hub oil. Apparently the thick hub oil can stop the pesky little leaks, maybe permanently. Of course when changing the fluid at the recommended intervals you will have to add the Lu...

I suspect that likely you will need to replace the valve cover gasket. With the engine cool, run a clean rag under the valve cover / engine head seam, if its wet, replace the gasket.

Fixed! My '83 oldwing had an electrical issue.

So I took out the solenoid to trouble shoot the connections and decided to take a better look at the dog bone fuse. As I was unscrewing the first terminal the fuse fell apart, I tried to pick it up, but it deteriorated in my hands. Found a replacement fuse in the fuse holder, polished it up, it wasn...

Re: My '83 oldwing had an electrical issue, need suggestion.

So the battery checks out OK, I load tested it and had the local Parts Source verity it also as good. After I reinstalled the battery and turned the key, all lights went on as usual, hit the starter and it started. However after about 10 seconds, it started to stutter and died. Turned the key off an...

My '83 oldwing had an electrical issue, need suggestion.

Hi all, So I always keep the battery on a tender while not riding while at home. Battery in this bike is of unknown heritage/age (at least 3 years old). Anyhoo, this morning I unplugged the tender from the battery and proceeded on my commute to work (15 minutes). At noon I went home for lunch and re...
