Re: 82 GL1100I questions re fan and backfiring

Thanks, found the fan switch operating temp 208 - 219 F and the thermostat is 179 - 190 F. Would like your opinion on a test method as my gauges aren't working. I can force a digital meat thermometer probe between the spark plug cap and the intake manifold - do you think this will be accurate enough...

82 GL1100I questions re fan and backfiring

I'm restoring an 82 Interstate. The timing belts have been replaced and the front and rear brake system have been rebuilt. Carbs rebuilt with Randakk's kit. Bike now starts easily and runs fairly smoothly. The carbs have been out a second time to reset the floats as it was running rich - seems bette...

Re: SYNCING AND IDLE SCEW ADJUSTMENT

Thanks for the input. All the jets are the originals and when cleaning, I followed the instructions (using a bristle from a brass brush) to insure I didn't damage anything - nothing was forced. I am pretty sure I got all the passages clear - with each one, once I thought I had it clear, I'd spray so...

SYNCING AND IDLE SCEW ADJUSTMENT

Finally got the rebuilt carbs back in the bike and fired it up. I was amazed at how easily it started. 82 GL1100i At this point I have not synced the carbs and it appears to be idling rich and continues to be rich when revved. I am also detecting the odd backfire. 1) Will syncing the carbs reduce or...

Re: RE-INSTALLING CARBS

Thanks for the input. I went with the gas tank solution - least resistance (those cross member bolts did not want to let go) - allowed me to move the tank back about 1/4" to 3/8" which was all I needed - the carbs are now in position, with slides installed - now to get the intake pipes back on the c...

RE-INSTALLING CARBS

Is there a trick?? to getting the carbs back in position. I know I had a hell of a time trying to get them out and after much giggling and pulling and cursing they finally came free. I just spent an hour trying to get them back in. Float bowl of #2 seems to be hanging up on the crank case breather p...

Re: REAR MASTER CYLINDER PISTON FROZEN

success - the grease gun worked - I even had grease appear in both the holes where the brake fluid reservoir connects - so I know both those ports are open - working on getting all the crud cleaned out of the MC before I put the new parts in. In the kit I bought the seal that goes on the piston is n...

Re: REAR MASTER CYLINDER PISTON FROZEN

In response to REDBUG's question - I hope to get back at it and try the grease gun approach today - got delayed by my 12 year old pickup - it decided to have break problems and I needed to address those first - the truck runs - the bike is a project that I hope to get running in the next couple of w...

GL1100 Rear Master Cylinder piston frozen

Anyone had success at freeing up the piston in the rear master cylinder. I am attempting a rebuild (got the kit) and I have the brake shaft out. Unfortunately the piston and seal did not follow (as suggested in the "how to" posted in the 1100 DIY by Wingman). Have cleaned out the portion of the cyli...

Re: WHERE DOES THIS PIECE GO

Thanks for the input. Got the little piece back where it belongs.
Having access to GoldwingDocs and all the knowledgeable folks who are active on the site has been a great help - and I am likely not finished asking for help as I proceed with this project.

WHERE DOES THIS PIECE GO

DSCN0714.JPG I am doing a caliper rebuild on an 82 GL1100I. Completed the rebuild of the right front caliper and was replacing the boot on the mounting bracket, where the pivot pin goes, and this piece fell to the floor - I didn't see where it came from. I removed the left front caliper assembly an...

CARB SYNC USING SINGLE VACUUM GAUGE

I recall seeing a photo (and I think it was on this site) that depicted a setup using aquarium T connectors and shut off valves to connect the 4 carbs to a single vacuum gauge. I'm pretty sure I recall the setup but if someone has this information or can provide a link to said photo, it would be app...

Re: Accelerator nozzles - carbs 1 and 2

Thanks for the responses. I originally boiled the carbs and then tried a commercial (for restaurants) degreaser, carb cleaner, brake cleaner, penetrating oil, and compressed air - managed to clear all channels in each body, except for those two accelerator jets. Subsequent to my initial post, I did ...

Accelerator nozzles - carbs 1 and 2

The accelerator nozzles on carbs 3 and 4 are clear but I am having difficulty getting any spray from the nozzles on 1 and 2. Looking at 1 and 2, it appears that these jets are fed from the small fuel tubes. Am I correct that the accelerator nozzles in 1 and 2 are fed by the small fuel tubes and I am...

How to free up those tiny pistons on the float valves.

Place the valve in a small empty container (lid off a can of WD 40 works) and put it in the freezer for 20 minutes. Boil a glass of distilled water (I used the Microwave). Drop the frozen valve into the boiling water. If it doesn't work the first time you might have to cycle through the process agai...

Re: FLOAT NEEDLE VALVE

Thanks for the input. I have managed to free up the plunger on one of the needle valves by alternately freezing and then dropping into a glass of boiling water. It is now back in the carb cleaner for some lubrication and I am proceeding with the other 3 valves to see if I can get the same science to...

FLOAT NEEDLE VALVE

Rebuilding the carbs on an 82 Interstate, using Randak's kit. Got everything apart and cleaned and all channels cleared but having a problem with the needle valve plungers - can't free them up - 3 of the 4 plungers appear to be in the extended position while 1 is compressed. I have tried boiling, so...

CV slide top limit plug

Rebuilding the carbs on an 82 Interstate. How critical is replacement of the O rings on these plugs. I am on my first carb #2 and while I can turn the plug in the slide, I am unable to pull the plug out of the slide and I do not want to damage the plug or the slide with excessive force. I have attem...

SYNC CARBS WITH SINGLE GAUGE

Some time ago I read an article (I think it was on GoldwingDocs) that provided guidance on how to sync the carbs if you only had one vacuum gauge to work with. If anyone can provide a pointer to an article or possibly a URL to a web site with this info it would be appreciated. Thanks

I am using the "Timing Belt Removal Replacement by Octane" to guide my effort. In the description there is a picture of a spanner zip tied to the frame. REMOVING CARBS

I am an old guy but a rebuild rookie - so please go easy. I'm preparing to attack the carbs on an 82 GL1100I. There is a plate running in front of the carbs, that appears to be part of the upper fairing and it also appears that it might interfere with sliding the carb assembly out once it is free of...

GATES PART NUMBER FOR 82 GL1100 TIMING BELTS

Would appreciate it if someone could either provide me the information or direct me to an existing post that contains the ...
