Re: Clutch Slave Cylinder overhaul

Dingdong nobody is saying you have to pull the alternator - only that I did it that way, which in the absence of a bike lift worked for me (as I recall).

Re: Clutch Slave Cylinder overhaul

Hi Doug. I think when I did mine last year I just pulled the alternator out and it got to it though there.

Re: Wants to fall over when slow turning or stopping.

I agree too, it is top heavy, and I also took a long (25 year) break in my motorcycling and then went straight to a GL1500 having never ridden anything like it because I'd always loved the look of Goldwings and always thought ..one day! So my learning curve was steep to say the least and anything ot...

Re: Wants to fall over when slow turning or stopping.

AZgl1800 is spot on - the ONLY way to keep it upright in tight turns is as he says, throttle, slipping clutch and back brake. I have dropped mine several times before I learned this - once in a car park with the wife on the back - she was NOT impressed!! Once at the top of the Stelvio Pass in Italy ...

Re: Clutch Slave Cylinder overhaul

Yes thanks, I read that although I'm pretty sure it didn't make it past the clutch cover seal (which I have changed now anyway although it looked ok) and as another poster said, there is a drain hole under the slave cylinder where it can escape. However I'm going to change the oil now anyway just in...

Re: Clutch Slave Cylinder overhaul

Thank you for the post especially with the part numbers and the tip about changing the clutch cover seal at the time which I did. The whole job would have been fairly simple but for getting the latter seal out which is a swine. You can't see it without a mirror, and the rubber seal has a metal inner...

Re: Question about windshield height

I bought the Madstad in October 2017. Spoke to Patty there on the phone (Patty@madstad.com) and she was really helpful. I think they made them to order.

I think marginally the fuel consumption is probably better although I couldn't quote figures - just seem to fill up less often.

Re: Question about windshield height

I went for the Madstad too for my GL1500 and I'm very happy with it. Yes you have to fiddle about a bit to get it right but it pays off and I much prefer being able to see over the top rather than looking through as I did before. Prior to going for the Madstad I did try cutting the old screen down s...

Re: Beating The ~80 MPH Limit of the GL1500's Cruise Control

Great article, thanks for posting it. Worked for me on my 2000 GL1500SE. I swapped the female connector terminals in the 22 pin block which I found just pushed out and are right next to each so very easy. Cruise control works up to about a 100 MPH now in 5th. Thanks

Re: Convert GL1500 from air shock to coil shocks

Following on from my promise of an update - here it is: The coil shock idea was a waste of time and but for the helpful chap at Firefox Racing who eventually gave me a full refund, it would have been an expensive mistake. After changing to the lighter weight springs and finding a slightly improved r...

Re: Convert GL1500 from air shock to coil shocks

Well I have now messed with the preload on my YSS shocks (with their lighter springs) and set the rider sag to about 24mm (travel at the shock - not the axel) and it was definitely better. This meant that the recommended sag with the bike only increased to about 13.5mm (I was told 10mm would be good...

Re: Convert GL1500 from air shock to coil shocks

Hi I am trying to do this myself. I have bought some YSS shocks - their RZ362 range. So far I'm still not happy. The ride was as hard as hell with the ones they first specified for the GL1500. Felt like I had no suspension at all, even two up. I have sent them back and they have put a lighter spring...

Re: gl1500 alternator rattle

Well reinstalling my rewound OEM alternator certainly fixed it and my bike is smooth as silk again so I'll be sticking with that. The one I bought was almost new via Ebay from someone who claimed he had sold his bike without it - most probably because he knew it rattled. I certainly won't be selling...

Re: gl1500 alternator rattle

Well my efforts with the paint did not work at all as it wasn't up to the job and came off in minutes. However my second attempt using 0.1mm foil from a food carton does seem to have held up well. I cut pieces to fit and glued them into place using JB Weld epoxy metal which is literally as hard as n...

Re: gl1500 alternator rattle

I have same problem. Measuring the original hitachi coupling fins they are about 0.2 mm thicker than those on the new high output unit (which is a WPS 90amp) . Rather than shim them I've painted the fins with high temperate Hammerite paint to build them up a bit so they fit tighter. Will fit tomorro...
