Re: Poor Boy vs Stator Replacement

Also with the Poor Boy you do not have to worry about running things like heated clothing or grips.

Re: Poor Boy vs Stator Replacement

If your poor boy alternator dies, it can be fixed anywhere. If your stator dies anywhere you will have a problem. That being said, it is a tough choice. I agree pulling the motor yourself will be a great opportunity to clean check and fix many things. Good luck.

Re: Started a home built Poorboy

Using the square stock for the lower mount will give lots of strength to stop the braket from flexing. Looks great so far.

Re: Stator Failure

You are right about having a stator fail while on a long trip. It is not a good road side fix. I put the Poor Boy conversion on my Aspencade a couple of years ago when the second stator failed. No charging problems since and plenty of power for heated grips and clothing.

Re: horn indicators and bang

It may also be the pulse generators, you can check their resistance to see if one or both are bad.

Fort nine.ca sells new ones for around 300.00. Ebay.ca will have used ones for a lot less. Good luck with your bike.

Re: poor boy conversion

Yes, give yourself a week end and you will be glad you did it. :D Once you have completed the conversion you will never look back. I did it on my 86 Aspencade as well. Watch the video in the how to section here first. The pulley in Don’s kit is perfect.

Re: not starting

Any luck getting your bike started? Has to be either fuel or electrical. You could spray some carb cleaner into the air box and see if it will run while spraying the cleaner. This may help determine if it is a fuel delivery problem, dirty filer or bogus pump. Keep your face away in case of a back fi...

Re: GL1200 Interstate 1989

Parking the bike on the centre stand will help. I have two 1200’s one does it and one does not. But yes this situation happens a lot. Once the bike has been started for the first time it does not do it again until it has sat for a day or two..This could be a valve seal problem but I tend to think it...

Did he wash it or leave it in the rain prior to this happening? If so one of the spark plug drain holes could be blocked.

Re: Gl1200 shuts down while driving

Yes it does sound like pulse generators or your case pulse generator with the SEI version. If it is bad you can replace it when you change the timing belts. For your piece of mind the belts should be changed after sitting for so long.

Re: Heated Grips

I use hippo hands already, and yes they really help on the cold days. I think combining them with the grip warmers just might be perfect.
