Re: "the Hunley" my first retirement project

thank you for the reply and the insight.....didn't want to start a 'tempest in a teapot'. sounds like you have a huge amount of patience. i did a '78 that had been taken apart, but not put back together. it had been sitting in boxes in a garage for a couple of years, and was actually in not too bad ...

Re: "the Hunley" my first retirement project

dummy me, and sorry if you have explained it somewhere else, but why refer to it as 'hunley'? Don't ya hate when you ask a question and get ignored? guess so, but wondered if a dumb question wasn't worthy of a response! do you know the answer? some people call things some weird names; maybe he does...

Re: Question about smoke at startup

i think the good advice is that you should ignore it and put on some miles (a bunch). my '78 had been sitting for a couple years and wasn't running very well. the best advice i was given was put a thousand miles or so on it and see what happens. turned out to be the best advice i got. if i fill it t...

Re: 1976 GL1000 Second time around.

just my opinion, and sometimes it sure isn't worth much, but i'm not a fan of your new mufflers (please forgive me!) when i needed a set for my '78, i found a set of take offs from a new triumph and the fitment was really easy. we had to manufacture some header pipes and hangers, but it went pretty ...

Re: New to me '75 GL1000

what happened?..........i hope you are a patient person! these are marvelous old bikes, but looks like you're gonna need to spend a LOT of time with that old girl. my '78 took an untold amount of hours, but it rides/runs beautifully and is my main ride. almost every time i stop to gas up, someone wa...

.........tear off, and throw away all that fiberglass junk that makes it look so bad! there is actually a nice looking bike under there. I put on soft bags/tail bag and a windshield........each to his own I guess.

must be more of us out there tho, as you can't even give the old fairings away.

Re: New Member -Need help! I just picked up this 78' beast.

i know this is 5 years later, but thought i'd ask how you made out with the old bike........sounds like the one i dragged home in boxes about 3 years ago. took me two years to put it back together, but i ended up with a really sweet ride that i believe will be the last bike i ever own. it does every...

Re: Tire recommendations

i just took off a shinko tour master......hadn't had any trouble with it, but wished (don't we all) that i would have lasted longer. 10K doesn't seem long enough to me...am i wrong (old bike get ridden quickly, but never gobs of throttle)?

that's 10K in Kms, by the way.

Re: 78 fork springs

try racetech.com enter the year/model of your bike and it will show you the ones that will work. you will need new fork springs, and they will have to be constant rate springs.....progressive springs will not work. buy constant rate springs one step softer than those that are recommended. if you nee...

Re: 78 fork springs

..got the bike for free, in boxes. took my time and two years to go over it and get it on the road. THEN spent 1300 on the suspension. it's got 75 thousand Km on it and will be the last road bike I ever own (i'm 67!)

Re: 78 fork springs

when I got my gl, the front seals were leaking a little, and I didn't like the ride in general, so went the whole route......new springs and also put emulators in it. while there, I decided to put on new shocks as well (after all, they're 40 years old!). doesn't ride like the same bike and for 1300 ...

Re: balancing beads in tubed tire?

not a derail leakyroof, but when I asked about my stealership doing the carbs on my gl1000, the guy got a hazy look in his eye and said, 'we don't touch that old ****'........money must be coming in too easy, or they don't have the knowledge to do the job.

Re: balancing beads in tubed tire?

thank u for taking the time to reply.........i've been reading a VERY long winded thread about beads since posting, and finally found reference to beads in tubes. they felt, as you do, that beads in tubes would be fine. i'm gonna try them, as it's an hour to a shop that will balance my new tire, and...

balancing beads in tubed tire?

i've read some threads here about using balancing beads, but no one has mentioned whether or not they will work inside of a tube.

what say you?? has anyone tried putting balancing beads inside a tube tire?

Don't worry about checking the valves because of the valve cover gaskets. The gaskets are rubber and are good for dozens of removal and re-use.
............depends. on these old bikes, they've had plenty of time to dry out. for the price, get another set before you take it apart (imo)

Re: what would you do??

thanks for the replies; I know I'm the only one who can pull the trigger or not. I've gone over the wing from end to end and know how it runs/it's reliable. out on the road, there is no need for more power.....it does need some suspension mods to be a better bike, but a new set of rear shocks and fr...

what would you do??

I've got a 1978 gl1000 that is in really nice shape and runs like a watch......but a friend has a 1983 bmw r80st he wants to trade me for the gl1000. He already has a /5 he rides all the time, so the st is surplus to his needs and he says he wants to put fuel injection on the wing (he's a wizard wit...

Re: mufflers for a '78

thank you for taking the time to reply.......I was hoping the older style would fit so I don't have to start doing mods to a set that isn't made to fit the bike. besides, if they are Goldwing pipes, they'd probably look more like stock. sorry there are no pics (for two reasons)...I haven't seen them...
