Re: Countersteering: Watch this and save your life

GLer, that's exactly what I'm thinking. I know I do it, but if called upon to do it consciously in an emergency could I? I can't say with 100% certainty that I would. So I will be practicing this on the next ride and many times thereafter!

76 GL1000 radiator/fan set up

As I have learned, you can NEVER take enough pictures. It's so fun to take stuff apart and say, "oh, I'll remember how it goes..." I am putting the radiator and fan motor and shroud together. I'm not sure on the orientation of the shroud relative to the radiator and the orientation of the fan motor ...

Re: Riding in wind

Holy crap, riding in that would be a disaster! I was looking into a belly pan and read some mixed reviews on them regarding the 1500. One being heat buildup while city driving, I do a lot of that, so that's concerning me a little. They made sense when it comes to road debris though. A hole in the oi...

Re: Riding in wind

WOW, thanks for all the input guys! I just might try a belly pan, figure it can't hurt. When you guys mention counter steering, I know how to use it in a turn so do you mean to use it to counter the push of the wind and keep the bike in a straight line? I love the quotes FM-USA, those are food for t...

GL1000 Fork Rebuild question

I am in the stage of putting the forks back together. The springs are within spec for length. The issue is when I took them apart, at the top under the cap was an additional short spring. (about 1.25") It looks just like the main spring in structure, just short. In between this short spring and the ...

Re: Riding in wind

And about the time that you get comfortable with riding in a lean, you will be passed by a big truck that completely blocks the wind.... /dwight Then you get hit with the blast of wind that was hiding behind the truck!! HAHAHA Thanks guys I will work on not using the white knuckle technique that ha...

Re: Riding in wind

I have a really tall aftermarket windshield, don't remember the brand, but it's quite a bit taller than stock. Been thinking of cutting it.
Relaxing my grip sounds counterintuitive, and scary! That ride was really taxing, I was exhausted when I got home!

Re: What clothing do you wear

I have the Bilt Explorer Air jacket and pants set up. You mentioned pants being too long. I'm only 5'8" so the pants were long on me. I had to have a seamstress shorten them but it had to be done above the knee, she said it was a real pain to do, but it did work. So it can be done if you can find so...

Riding in wind

I need some advice on riding in the wind. The last couple of weeks it has been crazy here. I'd say gusting in the 30s. I was riding to Tucson from Casa Grande last Sunday and there is an area that is prone to dust storms about half way between. It was probably gusting to 40 mph. I swear I was in a ...

I always wear a modular helmet, armored mesh jacket, riding boots and gloves. I sometimes wear armored pants, but not always.

I will hit 39700 today.

Not bad for an 18 y.o. bike! I've only owned it a year this June.

My truck has 257000 and its a 2006, hahaha.

Re: Brake pedal adjustment?

So, as promised, this is my update about fixing my brake light adjustment switch. I have been really busy lately so haven't had time to deal with it. (At least I thought I wouldn't have the time.) I finally brought the bike to my office, that's where I do all my wrenching. During some other projects...

GL1000 nipple source?

I am restoring a 76 GL1000 and I need nipples for the wheels. I am trying to restore as much as I can and not just buy new parts if possible. The spokes are good and can be polished but the nipples are trashed. It looks like someone used vise grips on them at some point. OEM nipples are not an optio...

Re: Finally got my bike all together

Very nice! I love seeing old bikes on the road. Just this morning I saw an old Honda of some kind, single cylinder, not pristine but it was running just fine.

Hope you have many more happy miles together!!
