NIce custom exhaust. Where did you get those shorty glass pack mufflers and how do they sound? Post a video when you get it running.

Re: What's up with the red dots?

My '77 used to have them until they got painted over. Calipers and swing arm. Don't have one on the gas cap.

Maybe a production line check mark for "assembly complete/tested" ? My other bikes have lots of yellow paint marks on them at various assembly points.

Re: What to look for when buying

I've got a bit of a sickness when it comes to saving old bikes. I'll gladly tear something down to the frame and build it back up, even if I get a bit upside down. It really is a passion of mine to bring these old timers back. I know this sickness very well. I have three old girls now. The 77 Wing,...

Re: What to look for when buying

No carbs or exhaust? Big $$ items there. Hard to find decent oem exhaust in usable condition w/o rust issues. Check the gas tank for bad rust. PIA to remove and clean properly. I picked up a 1977 18 months ago and put about $1,500 in it just to make it road worthy. You won't recoup the money you pit...

Re: Value of a 78 GL1000

The early Gold Wings are not an in demand collectible, therefore the price of them is not through the roof and is reasonable if you are purchasing one. A low mileage museum piece is probably worth $5k? Anything ridable in very good condition should fetch $1,800 minimum. As far as resale you usually ...

Re: Old 77 wing for parts

I have freed up several "stiff from sitting" engines filling the cylinders with diesel fuel and letting it sit. Unless its been sitting outside and uncovered the chances are pretty good you can free it up. Usually light rust on the rings and cylinders are holding it. It may even be hydro locked from...

Re: Old 77 wing for parts

Yes. The 1977 model has a kick start feature. The lever is under the right side shelter cover and plugs into a receptacle on the left side of the engine.

You could probably put a rod or pry bar in the receptacle if the kick lever is not there just to turn it over.

Re: Turn Signal Beeper

If you still have the original wired in there are three wires going to it. One from each front signal and a ground. Using the oem wires will not enable the silent feature. Not hard to figure out, but if you aren't sure you can make the connections at the rear signal wires under the seat and you are ...

Re: Turn Signal Beeper

My GL1000 was the first bike I had seen with this feature and found it to be very convenient and safe. So safe I replaced the one on my GL1000 and made a kit to add to any bike. I have added one of these to every bike I have and continually get comments about it. I have sold nearly 100 of these over...

Just about any auto parts or hardware store should be able to match the o-ring. Just make sure it is gasoline compatable. Napa stores usually have a good selection.

Randakk has kits to repair said posts. They are easy to break when driving the float pivot pins out.

Re: Rear Luggage Rack

Too bad they don't ship to US. I would like that style on my '77. Hard to find anything decent that is not all rusted and needs re-chromed. I have one that came on the bike and there is little chrome left on it. About $200 to get it re-plated with no guarantee.

Re: Antifreeze and Oil

My original Honda water pump failed at 37,000 miles. I replaced it with the Caltric unit with no problems after 1,7000 miles last year. Big price difference from the oem Honda pump. The only noticeable difference is the Caltric pump has a steel impeller vs a phenolic one from Honda. Coolant should l...

Re: Early Production 75

Looks like there are a lot of non-stock items on the bike already. The mufflers, low handlebars, the square rear signal and the seat are definitely not stock 1975. You definitely can't beat the price though. Would make a good daily driver. I would hate to part out a complete bike like that if it tru...

Re: Running Rich 75 Wing. (I think)

Aftermarket kits for these carbs are hit and miss. Randakk has the best kit and only what you need. I have done two carbs with his kit with no issues. Float measurement is critical to these carbs. If not at the right level you will have issues. The pilot jets in these carbs are extremely small. You ...

^+1 on the Allen bolt replacements for the Phillips head screws. You will need an impact screw driver to remove them after giving the heads a good whack with a straight punch to break them loose. Take caution for they are soft and strip easily.

Try this guy. Gary Smith. He has made keys for a lot of the "stray" bikes I have brought home with incomplete or missing keys. He hasn't failed me yet and is reasonable.

Get it road worthy and ride it!....at least for one season. $500 is a good purchase price provided it is all there and not butchered into a café bike. Original stock bikes in fair condition bring the best money over a custom job. You should have a reasonable chance of breaking even on it provided yo...

Re: Missing Condenser on 77 !

The condensers keep the points from arcing during operation. It is just a simple capacitor that absorbs the higher voltage so it doesn't cross the point surfaces. It will run for a time , but the points will destroy themselves.

No need for them on electronic ignition.

Re: 1978 Gl1000 Severe Loss of Power and Throttle Response in Gear

Make sure you get two condensers. One for each point set.

Get your ignition problems sorted before moving on. If the bike was running before I doubt the valves are an issue, however adjusting them before a carb sync is recommended.

Re: 1978 Gl1000 Severe Loss of Power and Throttle Response in Gear

You should have very little sparking at the points if they are adjusted correctly and only at idle. Heavy sparking at the points is usually and indication of failing condensers and your points will look like terrible from all the arcing and not last long at all. Correct point gap and timing is criti...
