Re: Sudden failure left me stranded

I’m starting to suspect one of the coils is failing but I think I may also still have charging issues. I’m gonna fire it back up when it cools down and see what it does.

Re: Sudden failure left me stranded

I installed the new pulse generators and fired it up and it seemed to run well. I also installed a new battery and tested the charging system to find that it would only charge a little over 13 volts and drop to around 12.6 at idle. On the old battery it would spike up around 15 volts for a bit until...

Re: Clutch Master cylinder /replace or rebuild

They’re not especially hard to rebuild. Take it apart and see if the bore is in good shape. If it is order a kit.

Re: Sudden failure left me stranded

I think the pulse generators will fix your running troubles. Also a perfect opportunity to change the timing belts while you are in there. Good luck. I hope that turns out to be the problem. The timing belt only has a few thousand miles on it but I might as well start fresh while I’m there. I’ll ch...

Re: Sudden failure left me stranded

It does look nice... :) Thanks! It ran good when I bought it but it needed work. I rebuilt the forks including the TRAC unit, all of the calipers and master cylinders including the clutch slave, new wheel bearings and seals, new steering head bearings, bypassed the air to the forks and had new spri...

Re: Sudden failure left me stranded

It certainly is showing symptoms of bad pulse generators. They will operate until they reach a certain temperature and fail. The bike will not start again until it has sat for a while allowing them to cool down and function again. Yep. I am going to replace them just for peace of mind and long term...

Re: Sudden failure left me stranded

Thanks for posting the info. I’ll figure this out eventually but it sure is going to be hard to go very far on this bike before it has my trust. lol I’ll probably be riding in short loops for a while. As far as I can tell my 86 GL1200A should have a pulse generator under the timing cover. I’m kind o...

Re: Sudden failure left me stranded

I just fired it up for the first time after yesterday’s debacle. It runs like it’s ready for a cross country romp. But it’s not going to fool me this time. lol

Re: Sudden failure left me stranded

I have suspected the gas cap vent before but cracking it loose didn’t seem to help. I have never had a noticeable ticking from the fuel pump but every time I’ve tested it it seems to work. I do have to turn the bike over for it to deliver fuel. Is that correct or should it pump in the on position? I...

Re: Sudden failure left me stranded

Any chance you bumped a plug wire maybe? Cables all free, like choke cable? Have you a volt meter on the bike when it's being fussy? I looked everything over and did some more cleaning of terminals and got it running perfect again. Then I was very methodical putting it back together and tested it a...

Re: Sudden failure left me stranded

I put all the bodywork back on the bike and took it outside for a test ride. It has been firing up instantly on the lift but now that I took it outside it will barely run and sounds like it’s not hitting on all four cylinders when I manage to get it started. I’m guessing I now have a spark issue. I ...

Re: Big foam grips are hard to hold - possible fix?

The factory grips are very nice but BMW offers tapered grips that are thin where thumb is but widen as they go out so they feel thin but give a bit more leverage. Really nice but kind of spendy. Thin grips make you feel more like you are “in” the bike instead of “on” it. You feel much more planted a...

Re: need help getting nut off the Transmission

From what I can see in the pic it looks flush with the seal but if it is proud of the seal could you maybe chase it off with a drift? If not maybe you could pull the seal out and gain purchase? I’m just spitballing. And yeah, what happened? Or is that even a seal we’re looking at? If that is the fly...

Re: Sudden failure left me stranded

I guess I’m going to solder in the new terminal and button this thing up. I don’t know what more I could do at this point. I hope it doesn’t leave me stranded again any time soon. lol

Re: Sudden failure left me stranded

I decided to modify my homebuilt harness to replicate the new one from Honda just to see what would happen. With the three terminal connection and the r/w wire spliced into the red it is now charging at12.3 volts at 1000 rpm idle. At a constant 2000 rpm it is charging at 13.3v. At a constant 4000 rp...

Re: Sudden failure left me stranded

With none of the wires connected except for the large ones on the posts and the negative terminal removed from the battery I get no continuity to ground from any of the four terminals.

Try checking from each terminal of the solenoid to ground, no wires connected.
Will do this first and report my findings.

Re: Sudden failure left me stranded

I got the kit and there are some differences from the way I had it wired. Most notably it appears that only three connections are made to the solenoid. The red/white wire is spliced to the red wire upstream. We have been doing our part to try to help control the virus and staying at home. I was down...

Re: Sudden failure left me stranded

I really appreciate your help with this. My continuity tests were done with the wires disconnected from the solenoid. I was hoping to find an obvious short but nothing turned up. I’m moving on to other projects but I should have the factory upgrade harness in a day or two. I’ll report back when I ge...

Re: Sudden failure left me stranded

With the battery connected and ignition off I get continuity between the red and r/w wires. With the negative battery terminal disconnected I get no continuity between them. I also get no continuity between any of the four wires in every combination and I get no continuity between them and ground. A...

Re: Sudden failure left me stranded

I decided to fire it up again and see what happens today. lol. It turned over, battery was fully charged overnight, but it wouldn’t start. In the interest of science I decided to clip the new jumper wire and sure enough it started up. A bit of warming up and at idle it is now reading as low as 12.7v...

Re: Sudden failure left me stranded

So I made a harness and tidied up the connections to the starter solenoid. I incorporated the jumper wire between the red and the red and white wire. F807DC9B-B5AF-487C-ABA4-8796A36C99F6.jpeg I also cut out the terminal block to the stator. Soldered it up, put heat shrink on each connection, wrapped...

Re: Sudden failure left me stranded

I never checked AC but I did do the Steve Saunders method and they all read right at 4.8 volts. zOG_nmnRT5k There is good continuity between any combination of the three wires. There is no measurable continuity between any of the three wires and ground. I’ve come this far and it appears to be chargi...
