1983 GL 1100I, Painting Honda nameplates
Is there a secret way to paint the plastic Honda nameplates? My son painted them all black, with the idea of wiping off the black paint and exposing the chrome-like finish on each letter. That did not work very well. Is there a better way? Also, while I have you, is there a set of schematics on this...

Re: '83 GL11ooI seat cover replacement
Not sure what a saddle skin is but I did take off the old cover and it is an aftermarket replacement that someone had put on earlier. I don't want to put the old one back on as it was damaged. So, I just thought I'd try the cheap one to see how it looks. Does a saddleskin replace a cover or is it us...

'83 GL11ooI seat cover replacement
Just curious about those cheap $65 seat covers on E-bay. Has anyone installed them? and if so, are you satisfied with them? I do not want to hire any professionals to get this bike on the road and I am willing to accept 'pretty good' if I can do it myself. Plus I don't want to put a lot of money int...

Carb rebuild leaking around float bowl gasket
So, I bought 4 cheapie carb rebuild kits mostly to get new gaskets and needle valves. I checked oem parts first, and they were so expensive that I figured what can go wrong with a simple cheaper gasket. They seemed to fit fine. Then I installed the needle valve that was included with the kit, and ad...

Float installation
Going with the hypothesis that there are no dumb questions or comments. When taking my 83 GL1100I carb floats out, it appears they're upside down. All small engine carbs that I have worked on, in the running position, the float pillows fit down into the float bowl with the tang on top. These are jus...

Re: Slow Jet and Main jet pictures
Thanks for the easy to understand posts. This is an 1983 GL1100I, carb #2. I did pull the main needle jet out, just like you both said. Used a small dowel. Cleaned it, and noticed there were no holes which I thought I'd see and need to clean. So, I cleaned and reinstalled it. The slow or idle jet is...

Re: Slow Jet and Main jet pictures
Those pics help a lot. Thanks. My threaded jet does screw into a pressed jet. There must be a better way to remove the pressed in parts. I tried the EZ out idea, but that did not work and I probably have destroyed the pressed in slow jet. I will replace them both as soon as I get them out. How did y...

Slow Jet and Main jet pictures
Does anyone have pictures of the main and slow jets in this 1983 GL1100I carb. I am referring to the two that are pressed in and have to be pulled with a ez out. Maybe if I see it, it will be easier to take out. I've looked at parts schematics and the pictures are not very good. Thanks..Ron

OOPs.. sorry. I brought in the wrong one. It does not look like that. The one that is plugged is smaller and only has 2 little holes X4. I think it is the low idle valve. Ron..

Re: Idle jet plugged
Thanks for the reply. It looks exactly like that. I soaked it overnight in carb cleaner and used a guitar e-string to clean the little ports on the side, but the main channel is still plugged tight. I took a magnifying light and looked and it appears to be a shiny metal plug. Also, I need a way to r...

Idle jet plugged
Carb dirty with insides caked with something white that looks like calcium. Scrapped, wirebrushed and scotch padded until it is relatively clean, but not perfectly clean. Problem is the idle jet, the smaller of the two. It is plugged with something hard. I've tried wires and even a small drill bit t...

Just as an afterthought, I did not hold the gas wide open when taking the pressure reading. I will do that next time I visit my bike which is at my son's garage..

1983 GL1100I, #2 exhaust cold to touch
This does not make a lot of sense to me. The engine seems to miss and occasionally backfires through the carbs. If I remove the plug wire to #2, the engine dies. The other 3 cylinders have a hot exhaust. #2 does not. Seems to me, that if for some reason #2 was not firing, it would not matter if the ...

re-wiring my 1983 1100I
The rear wiring on this barn find is an electricians nightmare and I will be removing it all up to the major connectors under the seat. I have a full spool of unused 18 guage speaker wire. It certainly looks hefty enough to carry tail lights and turn signals. I am not sure what the specs are for lig...

silicate free antifreeze
Was at the neighborhood hardware looking for stainless steel nuts and found Master Mechanic 50/50 extended life anti freeze. It does not say it is silicate free but does say that it 'meets the silicate-free requirements of Japanese OEMs'. I hate to presume anything with this 32 year old, but I suppo...

Re: How to flush your cooling system
This may come up twice. But, I was just getting ready to flush and fill my 83 1100I when I saw your thread. I was going to use Prestone 50/50 prediluted. It does not say it is silicone free and does say that it is for all cars and light trucks. I would guess this is not the right stuff for the Honda..

Re: Brake piston size
Thanks for that information. I knew that the foot brake worked both the rear and the right side front, but never realized that the pistons would be smaller and after spending hours cleaning them, I still did not recognize the difference. The parts I got from Cyclemax are genuine Honda parts and I ha...

Brake piston size
I've been cleaning all three brake calipers and never noticed that two pistons are smaller. I marked them as they came off the bike so they would go back on in the same order. But, I just discovered that the right front caliper has smaller (25.2mm) pistons than the other two (31.8mm). Sure wish I ha...

Re: 1983, 1100I timing belt replacement
Wish I had thought about that before. I could have just marked the old belt and tooth on both sprockets with some white paint, and then just laid the old belt next to the new belt and marked the new belt on the same teeth and just made sure that the marks lined up when I installed it. Saves doing a ...
