Re: coolant question

I've never used the 5 year coolant so can't say either way. The reason Honda specifies using their coolant, is that it's silicate free, and helps extend the life of the water pump. Many coolants use silicates, which are abrasive, to "scrub" the radiator and coolant passages inside the engine. The Ho...

Re: cooling fan temp...

The fans should come on when the coolant reaches about 217 degrees. Not sure exactly where the needle on the temp gauge will be. You can check the coolant temp by aiming a laser thermometer at the top part of the radiator

Re: HELP! Travelling. Broke down in Liberal KS. Refer mechan

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I saw my customers wife at the flea market today, and she said that Fred and his buddy were able to make it to Dodge City, where they're going to hang around until the Honda dealer opens Tue morning. Looks like they'll be losing 4-6 days of riding time. :( Oh well, t...

HELP! Travelling. Broke down in Liberal KS. Refer mechanic

Can anyone recommend a good GoldWing mechanic near Liberal , or Dodge City KS? A good customer of mine is travelling from N. Carolina to CA and his 86 GL1200 broke down in Liberal KS. He just called me, asking for help in diagnosing the problem. From what he described, it sounds like like the pulse ...

-Anti-seize. No more stuck spark plugs :D .

-Loctite for the stuff that you don't want coming unscrewed.

-Di-electric grease to keep the electrical connections corrosion free.

Re: switching out engines

I would install the complete engine/transmission assembly. The trans is located inside the engine cases, so you'd end up pulling the heads, removing the clutch, splitting the cases, etc.. to access the trans. Here's a few things that come to mind that might make the swap go a little smoother: -Is th...

Re: Valve adjustments

Sounds like you've probably installed the cam correctly but your valve adjustment procedure might be wrong. After adjusting the valves on cylinder #1, rotate the engine 360 clockwise (looking at the engine fron the rear) and then adjust the valves on cyl # 2 (not #4). Also, you need to be sure that ...

Re: losing clutch fluid

It can't leak internally. Most likely place is from the slave cylinder at the back of the engine. If it's leaking, you should see fluid somewhere.

Hey Mooseman & WA9FWT, thanks for the links :D. I try to read everything I can get my hands on, about oils, additives, etc. From what I've seen with my own eyes, there are certain oils that I swear by and others that you couldn't pay me to use. Anybody else have any experiences (good or bad) with ce...

Re: Engine almost out, clutch Question

Yeah, stator was going to be my first guess :) . I'm with you on the conversion. It makes sense and look ok, but I always go with the new stator. As far as the clutch goes, you'll need the special tools if you want to torque the hub nut to the proper spec. If you don't mind "torquing" it with an air...

Same question as WingAdmin. What exactly does it do when it gets hot? More details would help point you in the right direction. Could be electrical, carburation, mechancical, or?

Re: Engine almost out, clutch Question

It can be done either way. By leaving the line installed, and removing the slave, you avoid having to bleed the hydraulic system. The clutch and brakes should be flushed every two years anyhow. So it's up to you. If you remove the line, be sure to replace the two crush washers to avoid leaks. Just b...

Re: synthetic oil

Well, I always hesitate to comment on oil because it seems to be such a personal/opinionated topic, but here's my 2 cents :D . Synthetic is definitely the way to go. A good quality synthetic, such as Amsoil, has lots of benefits and no negatives. Without getting technical, it's more slippery, breaks...

Re: Gas mileage has dropped

I wonder if there could be a blockage in the airbox, or air intake tract? This is the time of year when various rodents are storing food for the winter, and they seem to have a liking for airboxes. I see quite a few air filters covered with dog food, sunflower seed, acorns, etc.. You would think tha...

Re: Rich running smell

I would start by smelling the exhaust coming from each muffler. Does one side seem to smoke more or have a richer smell? You can also check the spark plugs. Keep track of which plug came fom which cylinder. What color are the plugs? A rich condition will produce a darker/black plug. Are all 6 plugs ...

Does your brake lever operate smoothly, or does it feel notchy? When you pull in the lever there's very little braking, and then the lever kind of jerks/clicks and suddenly the brakes grab?

Re: kinda new to the wing thing

Hi Chuck, welcome to the site. You can try bleeding the brake system but note that the foot brake operates the rear caliper and the front left caliper. If there's air in the system you'll probably have to bleed both calipers. Use DOT4 brake fluid. On a different subject, keep an eye on the driveshaf...

Re: Electrical Problems

Can't say for sure that this is the problem but the alternator would be a good place to start. The brushes are known to get stuck and will cause intermittent charging problems. If it is a stuck brush problem, then at some point it will stop charging altoghether. It's fairly easy to disassemble the a...

Re: Which Stator to buy?

I've had good success with stators from Rick's Motorsport Electrics (located in New Hampshire, I think). I actually prefer to install the Honda OEM stator but have a few customers that have insisted on something cheaper. The Ricks stator is made in the USA :D , has a 1 year warranty, and is around $...

Re: Leak Test

I wonder if the popping noise was just the piston being forced back down by the compressed air. This could rotate the engine to a position where the intake valve would be open, which would explain the gauge going to zero, and the air flowing out the intake and through the carb. One question though. ...

Re: 1985 Limited Fuel Problem, PLEASE Help!

I would check the following: Is the cam sensor connector plugged in and does it have a good, tight fit, with no corrosion?; Does the cam sensor have the correct resistance?; Is there obvious damage to the sensor? Most problems that I've seen on the Ltd injection system have been relatively simple. M...

As Lebouc stated, there's more than just the brushes. The alternator consists of brushes, stator, rotor and internal regulator. Any, or all of these could be bad. Also, maybe a bad battery?

Re: Charging system issue - battery good, alt good GL1500

It's possible that even though the alternator was rebuilt, the internal regulator could be bad. Just a guess though. It's pretty common to see electrical components break down under heat, and then operate normally as they cool down. Easisest way to check this would be to install a known good alterna...
