Re: '82 Oddities and Quirks

Four cylinder wings are very forgiving regarding exhaust changes. Possibly true, but based on my experience my GL1100 Interstate rode worse with the aftermarket SS mufflers than it did with the holed OEM system. My test ride was barely 5kms, it was all I needed to know I don't want them on my bike....

Re: '82 Oddities and Quirks

I'm 100% certain your power problem is due to the silencers, especially if your jets haven't been changed. Given your choke problems and the age of the bike I would remove the carbs, rebuild and synchronize them (removing the carbs will also help with the next point). If you aren't going to replace ...

Re: '82 Oddities and Quirks

"I wouldn't have thought about the exhaust system being a cause for the power issues. I hope not to replace them, but I'll consider doing so if I can't get the bike riding perfectly with the less extreme solutions." Back pressures are crucial. Silencer design is a specialized area, looks alone aren'...

Re: 79 gl1000 engine revs itself up to 3000 rpm and rough idle

Play on your throttle shaft will also affect your idle, if excessive, the action of the return spring may even raise it to 3,000 RPM as it tilts the shaft and opens the throttle flap. Also check for vacuum leaks.

Re: '82 Oddities and Quirks

Re: "sluggish going uphill". Looking at your pics, my experience with my '82 GL1100 Interstate in '91 immediately springs to mind. At the time I tried a set of stainless aftermarket silencers. Big mistake, the bike lacked power, torque and was terrible to ride! I wasn't about to start stripping carb...

Eliminating the brake dust would help a bit, but what does a guy do about road film, salt, and de-icing compounds that are put on the roads that eat the aluminum and steel on our bikes?
True, my mistake, here brake dust is our main issue.

Re: Clear coat aluminum wheels??

Everyone's addressing the symptom, but not the cause. Why don't Honda, or one of the brake pad suppliers, just make ceramic pads for the Goldwing. If enough motorcyclists contact one manufacturer then it may just prompt them to act, at this point they don't even know about our gripe.

Re: Clear coat aluminum wheels??

I had this exact problem on an E34 BMW 540i some years ago. The BBS-style wheels would be covered in black brake dust within days of cleaning. I solved the problem by fitting Akebono ceramic brake pads. Maybe, with enough demand, Akebono will look into manufacturing Goldwing ceramic pads.

Re: 1997 GL1500 SE Weird clutch noise when clutch released

Doesn't sound terribly difficult. Reason I'm curious is mine is also a little noisy when the clutch is released but quiets down when you pull it in. So am I understanding the parts diagram correctly that part 2 (and the stuff attached) is the part that spins down to a stop when the clutch is pulled...

Can you get to that bearing just by removing the slave cylinder?
Haven't done this job before, but according to this it's straightforward: http://www.goldwingfacts.com/forums/2-g ... aring.html

Item #23 in the diagram link below is what I believe to be where your noise is generating.

I'm inclined to agree with you, that squealing definitely sounds like a dry "#23".

Re: car tire on a 99 gl1500se

1 - are you using radials or bias ply tires? My wing is a 1995 and it uses bias ply tires. That brings up another point. You're not supposed to mix two different tires together such as a bias ply on one wheel and a radial on the other....... On a car one can mix radial and cross-ply, but never on t...

The less weight is awesome ! As for getting rid of the centre stand- best thing ever. I never ever ever use the damn thing because you need 3 people to lift the damn thing onto the stand! I am 5'6" and just shy of 66 years old and have no problem at all putting my GL1800 on the center stand by my s...

Re: 2018 GL1800 minimal shock travel

There is, perhaps, a variable here we're not seeing. As I recall, the different ride settings - both the sport/tour/rain/econ and the rider/luggage/passenger - change the suspension. One would think that a suspension capable of changing on command would need some power and input from the computer. ...

Pretty heavy pitting in the fork tubes.
Not possible to have the fork tubes stripped and hard-chromed?

Great pics and videos... but couldn't the goldwingdocs.com logo be smaller and placed somewhere in the bottom RH corner, it overpowers everything else?

Re: Heartbroken...rust

I recall buying a 2-year-old BMW 316 in 1989. The entire metal bracket securing the rubber strip to the rear bumper had rusted away. I contacted BMW and they replaced the defective parts, not under warranty but just because it was unacceptable for the product to fail so soon. Your issue is definitel...

Re: New 2018 Goldwing Survey

No center stand ... even my PCX150 scooter has a center stand! It's a great looking bike but everything has been scaled down. There's now enough space to take the wife and an overnight bag to the nearest motel to get a break from the kids.
