Re: Starter won’t work

Had a similar experience on my '85 GL1200A. Tried replacing the solenoid first but then had to replace the starter. Removing the stater is not that bad it is all the other parts that are in the way which can cause grief. Loosen the crash bars, remove the bolts from the exhaust. The left rearward exh...

Re: GL1200A electronic cruise control

The bike decided to take me down a rabbit trail while testing the wiring for the cruise control. The bike decided to no longer turn over. Went for the simple and ordered a new starter relay. That failed to fix the issue so I ordered the starter. Getting that starter out proved to be a very long affa...

Re: GL1200A electronic cruise control

What color wire feeds the tachometer? Having trouble getting system working. Went through the vacuum connections to make sure everything was flowing in the correct direction. Then went through the electrical, I have narrowed the issue down the the RPM input. What I have tried is to connect to the co...

Sorry no picture, look at page 50 of the owners manual you can download from the link above. The flat part of the adjuster is horizontal.

Re: Cell service around Lake Superior

Consider when passing through Grand Marais, MN of taking a side trip up the Gunflint Trail. 65 miles of paved road with enough curves and lakes for a good ride. Clockwise around the lake is definitely better.

Re: Cell service around Lake Superior

For the Minnesota side of Lake Superior Verizon is definitely the better choice. I live on the north shore. Yes there are dead spots but the highway corridor has the best coverage. Let's face it, we have low population densities on the north side of the lake in both US and Canada. You can add covera...

Re: How to reinstall the seat?

On the '85 GL1200A the seat is held on by two Alan bolts. There is a lever on the left side that is supposed to let you adjust the seat forward and aft. If the lever gets twisted 90 degrees it can cause problems.

Good luck.

Re: Question about rear wheel bearings

I am no expert but it sounds like a spacer is not in the correct place.

Different bike but on my '75 550F a shop put the rear tire back on without the internal spacers around the axle.

Take care,

Re: GL1200A electronic cruise control

Winters over, maybe. Have gotten back to working on the cruise control. Made an adjustment to the RPM switch. Changed it to 2000 instead of 4000. I have added 4 delco vacuum check valves. When I went for a test ride, the system did not engage the throttle. Next step will be to check the plumbing on ...

Hello,

I got a oversize windshield for my GL1200A from Memphis shades. It did not require any modifications. At 6' 1" I understand wanting the extra protection.

Re: Bringing an oldie back to life

It is a good place to start. Depending on the conditions of the floats and float valves you may get no gas in the carbs, too much gas, or a functioning carb. Tap each of the float bowls before filling the tank with gas to help loosen the floats. Worse case you will have to clean the carbs.

Re: Do you have a vintage ride??

Vintage bikes, I have two and a half. The half is a mini trail 50 that was a gift to my sister and me in the early '70s. First bike I purchased is a 1975 CB550F Super Sport in the late '80s. I completed a Saddle Sore 1000 on it last summer. Heartbreak-Hill-102217.jpg Last year I purchased a 1985 GL1...

Re: '86 Aspencade electronic speedometer

I have an '85 gl1200a. Replaced my sensor last year because the slot got chewed up by a failed gearing in the wheel portion. I could insert a screw driver and spin the unit and the speed would show up on the display but would not work on the bike. I still have it, not sure if it is the same as the '...

Re: Goldwing 1000/1100/1200 kickstand issue

Kickstand up, put my feet down at a stop light. Went to make a left hand turn a block later and heard the pavement on the stand. Canceled the turn and got the stand up.

Has anyone tried attaching a dragger that would push the stand back enough for the spring to lift it?

Re: To gps or not

I got a Nuvi65. Not bike specific. I like its large screen. I do carry a plastic bag to place over it if it starts to rain. The main uses I get out of the GPS is checking the speed of the bike, average moving speed, total run time and stop time.

Hello,

I am a little smaller than you at 6'1" and had similar fitting issues. Here is the link to my post on how I solved it: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=37876
The short version is I bought an old seat, cut and glued the foam, and had a new cover made.

Re: GL1200A electronic cruise control

Placing the servo took quite a few of on and offs. The cable was a foot longer than needed so the challenge was finding the best route. servo-controller.jpg The horn was removed and the tab on the bike bent so the horn could be moved towards the center of the bike. The cable was threaded between the...

Re: GL1200A electronic cruise control

A little more progress. DenverWinger, I have not attempted to sync the carbs on this bike so it took a little while to find the screw. I was confident I had a loose connection. I went to move the bike today and found it had gotten worse. No power after turning the key on. Flashing Fuel light 1/2 tank of gas

'85 GL1200A, Went for a ride today on a bumpy road. Something came loose and my Fuel light came on. Then the Tack went wacky 60 MPH in 5th and Tack was flashing red line. (I could tell by the sound of the engine it was no where near red line.) The gear indicator started flashing as well. Where shoul...
