Purchased a replacement from Memphis Shades for an '85 GL1200A. It was 2" taller than stock but did not have the side extensions of the broken original.

Re: GL1200 shifting problems
When you say you can shift it by hand, I get the impression that the heal/toe shifter is binding. Have you tried removing the heal/toe and just using a stock toe shifter?

Re: 1986 GL1200 dumped oil
When the water pump seal leaks, it will drip both coolant and oil from the front of the engine.

Re: Slow starter
Warm engines can cause higher compression which results in more load on the starter. Starter could be loosing some windings so it no longer has enough torque.

Re: Bad Gas Mileage
20 mpg definitely is bad. 70+ MPH into a headwind got 29-32 mpg on winter gas last weekend on my '85 GL1200A. No solutions but a couple of thoughts. Have you checked for vacuum leaks? Another thought is some kind of air restriction. Engine is getting adequate air at idle but as you accelerate you ar...

Just a thought, since I don't have this problem on my '85, have you cleaned the air compressor switch contacts?

Rev Limit
Saw a picture of a GL1000 Tac. It appears it has a rev limit of 9000. Is that correct? I believe my GL1200 has a limit of 6000. Just curious about why the difference.
Thanks for enlightening me.

I have experience the wobble twice on my 85 GL1200A. Both times I was in lane position 2 rolling at 30 mph. Moved my weight backwards in both cases and the wobble stopped.

Re: First Honda. First cruiser. 86 Aspencade SEi.
Did anyone suggest checking the swing arm bearings? Had to replace the swing arm on my '85 GL1200A because of a failed bearing on the drive shaft side last summer, 90K+ miles.

I've done 1000+ miles rides in less than 24 hours before without a whole lot of planning...but never bothered to submit anything for an IBA certification. :) It *can* be addicting! Yes it can be. Did the first SS1K as a personal challenge. It also gave me an excuse to circle Lake Superior in one da...

Re: No Ethanol Fuel
For summer use when the bikes are being ridden often the 10% ethanol if fine. Come fall, like WingAdmin, I switch to non-ethanol. Come spring the bikes will start with "stale gas" after sitting for months. For the snowmobile I run non-ethanol all the time. It can sit for 8 months between s...

Riding the GL1200A on Minnesota Highway 1. It has enough curves and hills to keep you awake.

Re: Gunflint Trail, Grand Marais, MN Road log.
The condition of the pavement does change section by section. If you don't push the speed, the surface will not be an issue. It is the curves and near wilderness conditions that are the appeal of the Gunflint.

Re: iron butt rides
An ideal BBG run consist of a cruising speed of 70 mph and stopping for gas every 310 miles. Each stop last just 10 minutes. Total time 22:58:44, total miles 1550, you always want to add a few cushion miles just in case. -Mark I hope you meant 210 miles. There's no way I could get 310 on a tank on ...

Re: iron butt rides
Well, since my 1st reply (back when the thread was new), Ive done a handfull more of them. 1500+/24hrs really wasnt bad. Its a tough ride tho, dont get me wrong. A traffic jam turned another one into a BunBurner Silver (1500/30). But those 1000mi days are pretty gravy on a 'Wing. Its been 3 or 4 we...

Re: First trip advice
General guideline on timing belt is 10 years / 40,000 miles, so you are due. You should be able to change the belts in half a day. Riding depends on how well your body likes the bike. If the ergonomics are correct you can run till time to get fuel without issues. If the fit is poor, you will need to...

Thanks, I would guess you did the Lake Superior Circle SS1K. That was my first IBA ride.
Working on series for MN Hwy 1 from Lake Superior to Ely, another great motorcycle road.

Re: speed sensor accuracy
Hello, On my GL1200A when the bike says 62-63 actual speed is 60. That is according to my GPS. Now to keep up with the Canadian drivers I usually have to travel 65 indicated. (FYI I am in NE MN). Another consideration is if the speed gears and sensors are starting to wear out. The gear on the front ...
