It's a wonderful bike that I've completely gone through and brought back to perfect running condition. Its 10/10 mechanically, and 9/10 cosmetically. 41,000 mile...

Re: Engine Piston

Be careful making final calls based off compression numbers. I've had wildly different readings on the same motor when using different compression testers. They're not all of the same quality or accuracy. The thing to look for is grouping. It's very rare for all 4 cylinders to fail at the same time....

Re: 83 Wing quit on me!

Have you pulled the spark plugs out yet and hit the starter button? It's possible you could have hydrolocked one or more cylinders when the bike was on it's side, but I think there's a problem with the starter and/or electrical system. Any results from any of the tests that have been recommended?

Re: 83 Wing quit on me!

Get on the bike, take it off the stand, put it in the highest gear you can get it in, let the clutch out, and roll it backwards as much as you can. Just an inch or so, enough to turn the motor just a little bit. Then pull in the clutch and try to start it. Could be a dead spot in the starter, and ge...

Re: Rear tire

Shinko 230 Tourmasters on mine. I've got about 5000 on them now, and the rear is starting to square off, but I mainly do highway miles on this bike. The front is starting to show some strange wear patterns, but nothing too concerning. Just some veeeerry mild cupping. The price is really hard to beat...

Re: How much choke do you give your goldwing ...

My 83 will give a little puff of blue smoke if I leave it on the side stand for more than about a week or so. If I ride it more often, it doesn't happen. Think about the design of these motors. When the bike is on the side stand, the left cylinders are pointing at the ground. It's most likely just a...

Re: 83 Wing quit on me!

The solenoid is right next to the battery, towards the rear of the bike. You had your hands on it when you were changing out the dogbone fuse. You have to pull it up and out of the round rubber holder to really get a good look at it. First things first, check your battery. What is your voltage betwe...

Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. Here is a link to a thread over on the GL1000 side that I have going on a 1976 GL1000 --->> https://goldwingdocs.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=45120 I'm taking this bike even further down that the 83 in this thread. Re: Dave's 1976 Restoration Thread

Here's the secret to getting it back together. Everything is bagged and labeled in the order it came off the bike. I don't know how guys do it when they just throw all of the fasteners in a bucket.

Re: Dave's 1976 Restoration Thread

You guys were right, those goofy nuts came off pretty easily with a set of channel locks. It's all stripped down, bearing races driven out, and cleaned up. Ready for powdercoat. That probably won't happen for a few months. They cut all of our overtime hours at work, so gotta be careful with money ri...

Re: Dave's 1976 Restoration Thread

Fred I'm going to do my best to make this one new again. I've got a serious problem with saving old bikes. Can't help myself. Like you said, they're not making them anymore. Once they've all been parted out or chopped up, that's it. Extinct. I'm doing my best to stop that from happening, one bike at...

Re: Dave's 1976 Restoration Thread

Sounds good guys. I'm going to continue the destruction tomorrow morning before work and see if I can't get it down to bare frame. I still have the brake pedal assembly, foot pegs, helmet locks, and steering head to take apart. I'm going to have to get creative with the steering head assembly nut. I...

Maz,

Is your stamped VIN completely gone, or just not as defined as before? I wonder if I can convince the powdercoater to go light in that area.

Re: Dave's 1976 Restoration Thread

I'll will be watching, I love these kind of threads! Like I said, this is going to be a relatively long project. My previous builds were always a bit of a rush job. I lived in an apartment and was stuck with a damp garage with no heat or electricity. This time around, I've got a nice warm, powered ...

Re: Dave's 1976 Restoration Thread

Here's my other ladies. I did the same treatment to the Aspencade that this 76 is going to get. I was able to save the paint on that one, but it was in a lot better condition cosmetically. By the way, our old bikes are great and all, but you all owe it to yourself to get some kind of modern ride. My...

Dave's 1976 Restoration Thread

Here we go, kids. Some of you may remember a previous thread that I started asking what to look for when buying a 1000. It ended with me bringing home a yellow 76 with the ugliest fairing I've ever seen. I finally got some time this weekend to dig into this bike a little bit. Well, one thing led to ...

The other hole?

So I'm sitting in my garage having a beer and a cigarette, looking at my 1100, and I can't help but wonder what this other hole is for? It can't be an alternate location for the passenger peg, because the bolt next to the hole would be in the way, and there's no way the rear rack could mount to the ...

Re: 1983 GL1100A Pulling the motor - any suggestions?

+1 on the oil pickup screen. Very easy to do out of out of the frame. Check your pulse generator gap. Make sure vac advance is working. I did a new clutch and springs while mine was out, might not be a bad idea depending on your mileage. Stator shouldn't be necessary unless you were having charging ...

Not sure where you're located, but if the Kenmore in your signature is the one by Akron OH, I'd be more than happy to lend a hand. I've got an ultrasonic cleaner and more than a few of these CV carb rebuilds under my belt. I'll even show you how to do it if you want to learn.

I don't see a reason you should have to replace them. Head gaskets and water pump o-rings are two different things. Why open up that can of worms if the head gaskets may still be good?

Thanks guys I'll check the wiring and make sure there's no exposed wire or loose or dirty connections. I can't see that the switch is dirty. I had the front cover off last fall installing a new water pump and made sure everything was clean and moving freely.

Mystery Neutral?

Hello all, I've noticed a few times recently on my 83 Aspencade with the digital dash that every now and then, my gear indicator will very briefly flash "N" for neutral while in other gears. I've only seen it happen 2 or 3 times, and it's only for a split second, but I'm not changing gears while it'...
