Re: New OEM Valve Cover Gasket Leaking...

It's the grommet buttons that hold the valve cover tightly against the head. If the rubber in the grommet buttons is compromised, they won't leak but you won't have full pressure on the main valve cover gasket and it will leak.

Re: Carburetor Rant

Got the idle jets out, the side holes were clear but the jet itself was indeed plugged. I know your not supposed to do this but a little fine wire fixed that. All four of the carb internals besides these two idle jets were surprisingly clean, so I didn't take any scary pictures. Sprayed out the insi...

Re: Best tyres for 1200

As these bikes are older you might be limited in what tires are available that will fit. Never owned a 1200, but I'm pretty much limited to the Dunlop D404 to fit the '80 1100. They give good service. So what is available "Down Under" that will fit the bike? Might be cost-prohibitive to im...

Re: Does my radio needs replacing ?

Is your "Mute" switch on the left handlebar stuck? Common fault on the 1500's Also, is that a US spec radio? US FM frequencies are 200Khz spread on odd 10ths, e.g the radio tunes 100.1, .3, .5, .7, .9 where European FM frequencies can be on even 10ths too, .2, .8 etc. so with a US radio yo...

Re: Carburetor Rant

Got the carb rack off today. took maybe 45 mins. Throttle cables weren't so bad this time as it appears the "Push" cable is broke. They usually don't break. Or is somehow disconnected in the handgrip end- but I doubt that. I replaced the "Pull" cable about 10 yrs ago after it bro...

With rear wheel in the air, try dragging the rear brake some while engine is turning the wheel. Noise might show up.

Re: Radio works but no info on Lcd Display

Does the radio's station memory work? If not, check your "Back-up" fuse (Think it's in the relay box next to the fuse box), seems that fuse is necessary for the radio display.

Re: 1986 Goldwing Aspencade 1200 won't crank

Water shouldn't have bothered the starter any. But no results from bridging the terminals on the relay points to starter problem. You might give the starter a couple whacks with your screwdriver handle to see if that does anything, but it sounds like time to get out the voltmeter and other tools and...

Re: 1986 Goldwing Aspencade 1200 won't crank

One easy test you can do is simply jump across the two main start relay terminals with a screwdriver. If the starter cranks the engine when you do that, pretty certain the culprit is the relay.

Re: Carburetor Rant

Well, an update... Nice and warm out today, so I fired up the 1100, still running on just the Left cylinders, and drove it around the neighborhood. If I give it some throttle, the right side kicks in and we have plenty of power, hitting on all four. :) So that confirms ignition is ok, there's fuel g...

If you've been reading posts here a long time I'd say the Japanese Hitachi eventually wear out the brushes. Common fail in Chinese is open rotor winding. Heard that can be repaired...

Re: 84 1200 rightbank 1/3 dead but all is correct

Easy way to confirm the wiring is swap the #1 and #3 plug wires. That will either fix it, or no change.

If no change, issue has to be no fuel getting to the cylinders.

Re: Carburetor Rant

Since both dead cyl are on the same side would have to be a problem with both coils. I didn't check spark per se, but I did unscrew the plugs and look at them. If it was spark issue they'd have been wet with fuel, but they were dry, that's why I'm sure its carbs. Just the idle circuits I suspect, I ...

Re: 1999 GL-1500 temp gauge not working.

Without looking at service manual seems that the temp sensor goes into the Thermostat housing, I recall a post where the Thermostat housing lost its continuity to ground due to corrosion on the housing attaching screws and having a gasket between the housing and the engine block causing temperature ...

Carburetor Rant

Well, after 17 years of having the 1100 start right up with slightest push of starter button (barring dead battery for whatever reason or starter going bad, or failed start relay) I had to argue with it a couple weeks ago. If the starter would turn the engine over it always started right up. OK - I'...

Re: Fan/temp switch boot

Yup - you found the problem. I'd just hack away at the rubber boot until you expose enough wire to solder to and solder it. Maybe coat the solder joint in epoxy when you are done. Worst comes to worst, just do away with the boot entirely. The fan switch has two round-pin terminals on it, I think you...
