Re: Rebuilding an 88 GL1500
For the shifting have you considered a shifter brace? I think they are still available, and they help shifting immensely.. The 4th/5th shifter fork issue you mention will manifest itself as the transmission will sound like a box of rocks when idling in neutral and front of the bike is pointing sligh...

Re: 2001 GL1800 rough Idle & Stalling
Knock sensor 25 or 26 codes are a common fault on the '01 - '05 models, sadly it's usually not the sensor but a faulty ECU. You could try swapping sensors from left/right sides and see if you get the other code to see if the fault follows the sensor. If you get the same code after swapping sensors b...

Re: Center stand
I park my 1100 with the rear wheel driven up onto a 2 foot long 2x8 board. With the rear wheel lifted by the thickness of the board makes it a lot easier to get on center stand.

Re: Battery question ?
You're spot-on, except you have the rotor and the stator functions reversed. The regulator supplies excitation voltage to the rotor thru the brushes, varying the strength of magnetism in the rotating iron poles of the rotor which cause current to be generated in the three-phase stator windings.

Re: Premium or Regular
For what it's worth, Regular fuel in Colorado is 85, not 87. All grades of fuel here are two points lower octane rating than at lower elevations, De-rated need for octane in high altitude, and the lower-octane fuels sold here are equivalent to low altitude fuel when used in an air-starved engine. Co...

Re: Two itsy bitsy switches by clutch handle
Switch activated when you pull clutch all the way in allows to start the engine when in gear.
On a 1500 that extra switch would cancel the cruise control if you pull on the clutch a little.
Does your 1200 Aspy have cruise?

Re: Hello! New member and a few questions
I'm 6' 6" and still have to stretch to see over my Slipstream Tall (same as a "Tulsa Tall"), but the windshield is in very good condition and still nice and clear to look through. The only time I really feel a need to look over the top of it is if it's raining. And "Precious Carg...

Start the diagnosis by opening up the timing belt covers. If you find a broken belt, you know the answer. If they aren't broken, they should be replaced anyway and you can proceed with the troubleshooting. Seems odd the oil light would suddenly come on as you are coasting to a stop. Even with a brok...

Re: Rear Turn Signal mount, gl1100 “standard”
In 2010 I took off all the rear Vetter gear and replaced with aftermarket saddlebag cage, frame, bags, lights and the main reason a trailer hitch. And then adapted the Vetter trunk to fit. Problem was, when I went to put this all together, I couldn't use the tail light assembly from the STD because ...

If you've tried one tooth in either direction and it runs best as you have it now, then I'd say it is correct!

Thanx for replies. I had been told this previously, but was told today by a reputable source that I would benefit by premium. ‘Wing runs like a striped a$$ ape on regular. Anyone use fuel additives to help maintain fuel system?? Premium in a 'Wing is just wasting money. Ethanol fuel is fine, too, i...

Re: New timing belt, is this okay?
The great GL1100 question - Do you time to the arrow, or the notch, both circled. Extremely unclear. They could've put the arrow and notch both on the same cog.... The GL1100 will happily run 1 cog off on the cam, but runs better when correct. I've always timed to the notch and not the arrow. There'...

Pictures would be great! Did you also install a relay? Could you tell me how you ran the wiring? Thanks so much. You can the fuel pump with a relay or maybe two relays, set up so either of them can send power to the pump, with pump power to relays sourced from IGN-On circuit somewhere like from dow...

Re: Engine died while riding
Fuel caps on these have a pressure valve in them which allows excess pressure (like when you are parked in hot sun) to vent, and allow air in while you are driving to replace the fuel you are pumping out to fuel the bike. You might've got "Vacuum Locked". The pressure valve in the fuel cap...

Totally agreed that dielectric grease is an insulator. Disagree on the usage though. Clean metal contacts coated with grease in halves of a connection plug will scrape against each other displacing the grease with metal-to-metal contact when you push the plugs together, leaving the remainder of the ...
