Re: Tire replacement based on miles or age?
Last summer I replaced the 7 yr old Front E3 (still plenty of tread left) before heading out on cross-country trip. Front tire gets significantly more stress on heavy braking when you are traveling 2-up and pulling a 550# fully loaded camper, so I didn't want to chance it on an old tire, especially ...

Re: Noisy alternator
They're inside the alternator. Six of them. Check them with an ohm meter, should show continuity in one direction only, if you reverse the ohmmeter leads they should read open circuit. If you find one of them which shows continuity in both directions it is shorted. Or you can take the alternator to ...

Re: Noisy alternator
A shorted diode will suddenly cause an alternator to whine loudly, and eventually will burn out the stator.

Re: Relays
Not exactly sure about the '90 (a few minor changes between 90-92) but the 92-00 have 8 relays in the relay box, 7 of them all the same type, the 8th one (blue-colored) is a normally closed relay for the position lights. The Admin here sells very good quality replacement relays for the 7 identical r...

Re: How long ?
Twenty years of Goldwings. Bought my first Goldwing, a '77 GL1000 for $100 in 2002 from a friend who had acquired it from who knows where.... It started and ran, and I drove it five blocks home. Had about 55K miles on it. But this was clearly a project bike. Ugliest bike I had ever seen! It had a Ve...

Re: 1983 Honda Interstate caliper conversion
Some of these parts are used on other bikes besides Goldwings, take for example the final drive fill cap / Stator cover cap. It is the same cap on the old 70's CB 750's used for accessing valve adjustment and a whole scad of other applications. Probably every bike Honda ever made has one of those ca...

Re: LED brake lights cause Cruise Control to stop working
I now have the flashing LED brake lights in my trunk, but left the lower brake lights incandescent bulbs. This seems to be enough load that the cruise is still happy.

Re: New to me 1982 Goldwing Aspencade. Fuel, Air, NO SPARK
Double check kill switch. A couple times have pulled helmet off handel bars and then crank but no start. Kill switch flipped back to run and then it goes. I have flipped it back and forth. There are two wires under the brake lever/kill swtich. I twisted those wires together thinking that would bypa...

Re: Center stand
Driving onto the 2x8 board effectively shortens the center stand an inch and 1/2 without any cutting at all, board just sits there where I park the bike and I drive over it when I pull into the garage. Stop with the rear wheel close to the front edge of the board, when putting up on center stand bik...

Do you have voltage on the black leads to the coils?
Where at in N Colorado? "United States" doesn't say very much.

3) If I let the clutch out slowly when pointing up hill (in the mountains right now) the drive train is jumpy like it's stuttering. Feels and sounds like up front. This is before I ride it. I have to park it on a little hill facing upward. When I park it, I have to ride it past my spot and roll bac...

Re: How to fix stator wires on GL1100 - Three Yellow Wires
This will give you a good idea to the state of the stator before you put the carbs back on: First, measure ohms between the three yellow wires, should be very low ohms, and roughly equal between all three pairs. Measure ohms from one of the yellow wires to ground (should be no reading, open circuit)...

I'd suspect plugged idle jets, I had same thing happen on my '80 1100 on the right side.
The jets on 1980 are removable, look for you tube videos for "How To".

Re: How to fix stator wires on GL1100 - Three Yellow Wires
Both the stator and the Rec/Reg are likely good. These Molex connectors have a nasty habit of burning out for no particular reason other than "They Can". It's really a matter of corrosion, and the high current which passes thru them. That's why we recommend to cut the connectors off the ye...

Re: Rebuilding an 88 GL1500
For the shifting have you considered a shifter brace? I think they are still available, and they help shifting immensely.. The 4th/5th shifter fork issue you mention will manifest itself as the transmission will sound like a box of rocks when idling in neutral and front of the bike is pointing sligh...

Re: 2001 GL1800 rough Idle & Stalling
Knock sensor 25 or 26 codes are a common fault on the '01 - '05 models, sadly it's usually not the sensor but a faulty ECU. You could try swapping sensors from left/right sides and see if you get the other code to see if the fault follows the sensor. If you get the same code after swapping sensors b...

I park my 1100 with the rear wheel driven up onto a 2 foot long 2x8 board. With the rear wheel lifted by the thickness of the board makes it a lot easier to get on center stand.

Re: Battery question ?
You're spot-on, except you have the rotor and the stator functions reversed. The regulator supplies excitation voltage to the rotor thru the brushes, varying the strength of magnetism in the rotating iron poles of the rotor which cause current to be generated in the three-phase stator windings.

Re: Premium or Regular
For what it's worth, Regular fuel in Colorado is 85, not 87. All grades of fuel here are two points lower octane rating than at lower elevations, De-rated need for octane in high altitude, and the lower-octane fuels sold here are equivalent to low altitude fuel when used in an air-starved engine. Co...

Re: Two itsy bitsy switches by clutch handle
Switch activated when you pull clutch all the way in allows to start the engine when in gear.
On a 1500 that extra switch would cancel the cruise control if you pull on the clutch a little.
Does your 1200 Aspy have cruise?
