Re: Critters In The Airfilter

See if you can get a piece of that 1/2" grid wire screening (like you might make an animal cage out of). Your local hardware store may be willing to cut you off a small piece... :)

Re: Locked handlebar/lost key

Might be easier to look on the Helmet lock for a 3 digit number stamped into the cylinder by the key slot. if not there, check all the other locks (ign, shelter lock).

Take that 3 digit number to a local locksmith and they can cut you a new key from that code.

Re: Correct Synthetic Oil Use

Must be a big run on Motorcycles changing their oil this spring, I went to two Walmart stores Saturday looking for Rotella T6, both stores had empty shelves, nothing left but T4.

On the Shell website the Rotella T6 page probably has more reviews from Bikers than Truckers!

Unless there's a significant voltage drop under load between the battery and ign switch. This would cause the RR sense voltage to go low, and the RR output to battery go high.

Re: Head light dead

Another famous GL1100 fault is corrosion in the fuse holders where it clamps onto the metal fuse caps. Also, the old-style glass fuses can have the element come loose at one end, it isn't blown, but it won't work either.

Re: Value of bike.

Just for fun I scanned Denver Craigslist this morning.

Seems the market on the 1500's has recovered somewhat, there were several 1500s listed, ranging from $3200 to $5700, I'd say average listed price in the High $4xxx range.

News reports saying prices on used cars is thru the roof, too.

Re: First time posters, say hello!

Hello all, Wing noob here. I just bought a 1986 GL1200I. I must say, I truly despise the 4 carb setup. I'm seriously considering a SCC on this bike. I'm also having handling issues, may be time for tires as the Dunlop E3s on her are starting to show dry rotted on the side walls and she handles a bi...

Re: Head light dead

Power for headlight also goes thru the start button. Press button shuts off headlight and energizes starter. Release start button stops the start motor and turns headlight back on. 1100 starter switch is notorious for getting dirty contacts in the headlight circuit. Try wiggling the button around an...

Re: GL1200 Limited - overchrging

13.9 is a good charging voltage...So I'd expect a low voltage drop reading at the regulator "sense" lead. 13.9 at the battery with an 0.17 volt drop at the regulator means it is regulating at 13.7 volts. The trick is going to be catching the bike when it is overcharging. If the regulator i...

Re: GL1200 Limited - overchrging

Well, that pretty well rules out voltage drops to the regulator sensing line as cause of high voltage. I'd have expected more like 0.25 volts though, maybe a volt meter connection came loose while testing? What meter are you getting the high readings on going down the road? Meter mounted on the bike...

Re: GL1200 Limited - overchrging

You might be able to get your meter probe to fit alongside the black wire where it goes into the connector at the regulator and make contact with the wire's connector terminal inside the plug. But if you can't get a reading that way, you can get your meter reading from a pin prick into the black wir...

Re: GL1200 Limited - overchrging

With engine running at 3000 RPM measure the voltage between the black wire (sense wire) at the regulator and the battery Pos terminal. if it's any more than a half-volt or so that may be the cause of the overcharging. The black wire comes from the ignition switch, and the voltage on this wire is wha...

Re: how do you switch over to an aftermarket 6 disc CD changer to play through the speakers?

I have a similar version Alpine CD changer. It works thru the FM radio with a modulator, just tune in the programmed frequency of the modulator into the FM radio. The modulator goes in-line with the FM antenna and inserts itself in-line in place of the antenna, so when the Alpine is powered up, any ...

I just move the spare tire and put it under the tongue about 6 inches behind the hitch, also a swivel. drop the hitch to the ground and it rests on the spare tire. My spare tire is on top of the tongue, we bungy-cord the propane grill to it. Perfect place for the grill, keeps it out of the cargo sp...

Our route will be to head from Jackson toward Toledo and grab US23. Since we can do the Denver to Jackson leg of the trip (1200 miles) in two days, I figure the 500 mi drive Jackson to Wise will reasonably be done straight thru, arriving at Wise Thurs 26th or Fri Night depending which day we leave. ...

Re: Scissors or Bottle Jack, lifting rear of an 1800?

This is an 1800, right? Another option for removing the rear wheel is to get a little help and gently lay the bike on its right side. Use an old blanket or something to lay the bike on. Won't hurt anything. Putting the center stand down after the bike is on its side adds some lift to get the rear wh...
