Re: Strange noise oh GL1100 1982

There is a U-Joint in the drive shaft right by the engine, you will find it inside the rubber boot between the swingarm and the engine.

Re: Strange noise oh GL1100 1982

Engine sounds great! :) Noise sounds like gear/drivetrain backlash on idling engine. Idling 3dr gear on center stand, there's plenty of places to have some backlash in the gears, and this will be much more noticeable al idle RPM. Since the noise seems to be more from the rear when you have the camer...

Re: "New" 1983 Aspencade

Don't have to remove the radiator, drain coolant. disconnect the bottom hose, remove the lower bolts and loosen the nuts on the top mounts. Then the radiator can swing somewhat away from where you are working. But if you've gone that far, why not disconnect the top hose, the connector for fan power ...

Re: My 88 hestitation solved

Some people have reported improved performance on the '88 / '89 wings by replacing the ignition trigger wheel on the crank at the timing belt pulley with an aftermarket one which is cut for 4 degree extra from OEM timing advance..... Cyclemax sells 'em.

Re: Amazon starter

Some of the Aftermarket starters have cheap planetary gears that shatter in the reduction drive. The gears or drive from the original starter **may** fit on the Amazon starter motor. Alternatively, your local automotive Starter/Alternator shop can rebuild the original starter, the OEM starters are p...

Re: '87 1200 As long as im replacing timing belt, is there

As long as the tensioners spin smooth and free I wouldn't bother replacing them, they -generally- last forever. And as long as nothing leaking on the front of the engine (thermostat, water pump etc,) and your temp gauge and fan switch is working there really isn't anything else to do in there. Put y...

Not to state the obvious, but have to hold Pressure check button along with increase or decrease button to run the compressor. I've forgotten that before. Engine might need to be idling, too, but don't think so.

Re: 1981 Goldwing rear tire.

I have Dunlop D404's on my '80 1100, the rear is 4 yrs old and I just put a new D404 on the front this past weekend.

I know the wheel sizes changed in years of the 1100, but I thought the '80 and '81 were same. Not selling the rear D404 anymore?

Re: Dash lights on turn signal

Can't really tell anything about timing belts by looking at them, so unless you know for sure they're less than 10 yrs old just change them. Doesn't cost all that much, a pair of Gates belts from Amazon runs about $35.

Re: Center Stand, Side Stand. Does it matter?

In riding season I generally just use the side stand unless I'm working on the bike, or need to crowd all the bikes (2 'Wings and Deb's Virago) into one side of the garage to work on a car. Sometimes I get a little oil smoke on first start - especially the 1100, but I don't worry about it - the smok...

Re: Road Trip! I bought the camper.

Good rule of thumb is to have about 10% of total trailer weight be on the tongue. So if you have a 250# trailer and 100# of gear you want 35# of weight on the hitch. If it isn't 10% of total weight rearrange your load so it is.

Re: 83 gl1100 stop running and won't start

Smoke from the timing cover?

Maybe you seized a timing belt idler bearing. But seems that would have made an awful lot of noise, and hard to say if there'd be enough drag on the belt to stall the engine going down the road.

Maybe a hairline crack in the 55 amp Dogbone fuse. Charging current has to pass thru that fuse.

Re: Alternator?

Thinking maybe the starter button got stuck, this would cause the headlight to be off and starter likely drained the battery.... With engine idling the starter motor would just be free-wheeling.

See if you can get a piece of that 1/2" grid wire screening (like you might make an animal cage out of). Your local hardware store may be willing to cut you off a small piece... :)

Re: Locked handlebar/lost key

Might be easier to look on the Helmet lock for a 3 digit number stamped into the cylinder by the key slot. if not there, check all the other locks (ign, shelter lock).

Take that 3 digit number to a local locksmith and they can cut you a new key from that code.

Re: Correct Synthetic Oil Use

Must be a big run on Motorcycles changing their oil this spring, I went to two Walmart stores Saturday looking for Rotella T6, both stores had empty shelves, nothing left but T4.

On the Shell website the Rotella T6 page probably has more reviews from Bikers than Truckers!

Unless there's a significant voltage drop under load between the battery and ign switch. This would cause the RR sense voltage to go low, and the RR output to battery go high.

Re: Head light dead

Another famous GL1100 fault is corrosion in the fuse holders where it clamps onto the metal fuse caps. Also, the old-style glass fuses can have the element come loose at one end, it isn't blown, but it won't work either.
