Re: Windshield recommendation.

I put a Memphis Shades Hell Cat on my 83 stripped 1100. I like it. Takes the wind blast off my chest and gives some eye/face protection from bugs. Not cheap but good quality mounting system and windscreen. They come with a selection of lower shade colours or clear. I bought the one that is black/dar...

I recently ordered a couple of 78 Gl1000 parts from them that were not available in north america. Seem to be a reliable company. Took several days but once they sourced the parts they were shipped quickly.

Re: Speedometer Cable Woes

+1 Rambozo beat me to it. I always look up my parts on fiche from Partzella or Honda Parts Nation before ordering parts. Many times the oem parts are very close in price to some knockoffs. In this case it is a "no brainer" to buy oem IMHO.

Re: GL1000 CARB. VACUUM COVER

I might be wrong, have been in the past but always thought that the caps and slides were to be treated as a unit. Have always been careful to # the parts when disassembling carbs for cleaning and kept the slides with their correct cap. I may be overly anal about this but would not just order caps wi...

Re: Center Stand Technique

I have both a '76 and a '99 1500. Although the 1500 is MUCH heavier, it is much easier to get on the center stand. The '76 1000 is damned near impossible for me. I made up an extension out of a piece of pipe that fits over the foot pad on the center stand. With the extension, I can easily get the 1...

Re: Center Stand Technique

I have both an 1100 and a 1000.The 1100 I can still get on the center stand using the technique in the video above. There is NO way I can do that with my 1000. I have to use a board under the rear tire or get a buddy to help me. I am an 75 YO geezer so not as strong as I once was and really don't wa...

Re: Temperature Sending Unit

I was not able to get the temp gauge to work and not an electrical genius so don't know why. Assume it is due to the digital gauge not using a 7V regulator. I did change the two post temp sender out for a single post but did not put a 7V regulator in the bike as yet. The bike is not a tourer for me ...

Re: E10 petrol? Gasoline.

Some will disagree but I find absolutely no difference in runability or mileage, in any of my vehicles, between e10 or 100% gas. I agree. IMHO the extra alcohol effects the storage time only. For normal season I use 10% as that is what is most available here. For the winter layover I make sure and ...

Re: heel/toe shifter

Don't know what type of boards and heel/toe it has but I took the ones off my 83 Aspy. Had to source foot pegs (Ebay) but the heel/toe was merely adapted to the stock shifter arm. So undid it and discarded the aftermarket shifter. I think you will be good to go if you have footpegs on hand. They are...

Re: Are these the stock springs?

Hard to tell but appear to be. I always check a fiche before asking ?'s like this. I ahve found fiche to be invaluable sources of info on parts when comparing or checking between model and years. Here is a fiche from Partzilla: https://www.partzilla.com/catalog/honda/motorcycle/1983/gl1100i-a-gold-w...

Re: Compression test help

First a disclaimer "I am not an engine guru" - Have you checked your valves for proper adjustment ( maybe the next thing I would do) It is something I would do in any event and is part of my maintenance routine. -Would suggest a bit more riding before I worried about a 130 reading. Not goi...

One other thought. Many folks have taken off their fairings to strip their bikes and have good working clarion controllers for sale. Don't know where you are shopping but 1980 was a Gl1100 not 1000. Not saying they won't fit (don't know) but they will be different if off a Gl1100.

Re: Inaccurate Speed on Speedometer

I have three different Honda's, it seems Mr. Honda was overoptimistic when setting up his bikes. All of my bikes and two of my buds Gl's are out by at least that much at the speeds you are talking about. There is no harm done and I merely reprogrammed my noggin to compensate. I don't think there is ...

Re: Help Identifying Wheel Model

The Rear #2 you show is off an early (pre 1983 which are mag type wheels) 80's Gl1100 and does not match the front one from the 79 Gl1000. I have no clue if you can make it fit but I wouldn't be buying it if you are looking for OEM. If you are replacing and want matched wheels which I am sure you do...

Re: 83 gl 1100 brake caliper replacement

My thoughts are that you will likely be able to rebuild the caliper in question (you won't likely need a complete new caliper)unless there is severe corrosion. Take it apart, most of us have done that and look at the pieces, most can be cleaned up and restored. Get back to the crew here once you tak...

Re: 83 gl 1100 brake caliper replacement

Couple of questions: You do realize that the brakes on your bike are linked? The front right and rear are activated by the brake pedal and the left front by the lever on the handlebars. Is the rear brake functioning OK? Have you taken the front caliper apart to determine the problem? Piston seized, ...

Re: How much for parts bike?

I'd say $300-$500 depending on condition and completeness. Does it still have the carbs? Is the engine in condition it can be made to run again? Exactly the price range I was going to post. No title so in my part of the world it is only a "parts bike". I understand some states are easier ...

Re: Temperature gauge refuses to work

Learned something today! Good work everyone, a valuable lesson. Will try it on my not working very well gauge on my 83. 7v regulator is OK (ie. fuel gauge good), ground the gauge and it pins to the hot side, changed senders & gauge still doesn't come close to being OK. Not saying it is the cause...
