Re: Question about smoke at startup

All GL1000s smoke sometimes at startup because of poorly designed rings. I bought a new 1975 GL1000 and it smoked from the first day I owned it. Try to keep the oil level halfway between the marks instead of filling it to the top and avoid the side stand. It will help it a bit, but nothing I h...

Re: Clutch adjust cover Gasket / O ring

That Partzilla link doesn't have the gasket he needs. The one he needs is a "square O-Ring" that seals the clutch adjustment cover. I couldn't find one last week when I needed one, so I made my own using a 3D printer. I will make him one if he send me his address.

Re: Clutch adjust cover Gasket / O ring

I designed one and printed it with my 3D printer. I used a TPU filament and it worked just like the original.

Re: GL1000 engine shutting down at lower speeds (while running warm)

Ask the shop if they replaced the plenum seals (between the plenum halves). If so, ask them if they tested for gas/air leaks after they replaced the seals. Also ask them if they pressure tested the float valves and checked the level of the gasoline in the float bowls after the rebuild job was comple...

Re: GL1000 engine shutting down at lower speeds (while running warm)

Do the same test except downshift into neutral instead of first. If it still dies, the clutch has nothing to do with the problem.

Re: GL1000 engine shutting down at lower speeds (while running warm)

Even if the the points and timing are not part of this issue, I recommend going with Dyna 3 ohm coils and electronic ignition. I would make sure the all four idle discharge ports are open by removing the idle jet screws and shooting a little carb cleaner in the holes followed by high pressure air. T...

Re: GL1000 randomly stalling

You may have a clogged Idle Discharge jet. This it the small tube that sticks up in the carb throat near the the butterfly. I know you cleaned the carbs, but the tiny passages in these tubes are easy to miss and difficult to clean. The result is a cylinder that does not seem to fire at idle. You may...

Re: Taper bearings ?

I have installed tapered bearings on at least 6 GL1000s and the 1975-1979 year models use the same size. I think it is one of the best changes you can make to a GL1000.

Re: Goldwing Tank

Most of the GL1000 tanks that I have cleaned have blocked tubes. I pour acetone through the holes where the petcock connects and then use a drill with weed eater cutting line strips. Get the kind that is twisted, not the round. You can get these from Sears in red (stiff) and black (stiffer).

Re: Torque Specs

The Exhaust manifold nuts torque value range is 11-14 foot lbs. The cam covers and the timing belt covers have special bolts that restrict you from over tightening. Be careful when tightening them and stop as soon as you feel them hit the stop. If you turn it past this stop, it will break the bolt.

Re: Electric Fuel Pump 1977 GL 1000

I have done quite a bit of research on this subject and installed electric fuel pumps on three GL1000 bikes. I believe the best pump for the GL1000 is the K&N Universal Inline Fuel Pump 81-0400. I wrote an article on the steps to do this and it includes a complete list of the parts required. This pu...

Re: idle issues

You mentioned that the bike was running on three cylinders which is key in solving this issue. I think you have plugged or partially plugged Idle Discharge Port Jet. This is the small tube that sticks up in the venturi near the butterfly. The passage in this tube is tiny and these often become plugg...

Re: 75 gl1000, burning fuses, please advise.

You may have a short in one of the handlebar controls. A damaged wire or solder connection may be shorting to the handlebar. Try taking the three screws out of the right control and split it apart. Separate the wires as much as possible so they don't touch each other and carefully examine them. Look...

Thanks for sharing this Cedric. It really looks clean. As you know, I have the Webers on mine and would like to bypass the old pump all together and get rid of the tach drive too. Re: GL1000 How to install an electric fuel pump

You can still buy mechanical fuel pumps but there are advantages to having an electric. You can prime the bowls with the electric and my bike generally starts and runs better. I removed the internals of a faulty mechanical pump and mounted it on the bike for looks only. Taking pressure off of the en...

GL1000 How to install an electric fuel pump

Here is a document that I created when I installed an electric fuel pump on my 1975 GL1000. This is a PDF file and it is stored on my personal web site. Hope it helps someone.

I know the side covers are made out of ABS plastic and Plast-Aid bonds to this material. Try it before you criticize it, you should try it for yourself. I have repaired many side covers with Plast-Aid and it works very, very good.

Re: 1977 gl1000 fuel trouble

Can you provide any more details? There are a number of things that can cause the GL1000 to run poorly, but from your short description, I would suspect the carbs have problems. Even though you cleaned them, they may be plugged up because there are small orifices that are easily overlooked. You also...

Others have given you some advice on the paint but you probably have cracks that need to be repaired too. For the cracks or other plastic repairs try using Plast-Aid. This stuff is amazing and it can even be used to make plastic parts. The repair will make your side cover like new. https://www.plast...
