Re: How to remove and reinstall your rear wheel

Moly 60 does not come in a tube. And I thought we were referring to the grease fitting. Good luck getting moly in that tiny hole. Js

Re: How to remove and reinstall your rear wheel

I was actually wondering that myself. According to my dad, he always pumped grease into the fitting until it came out of the fitting indicating that it was full. I can't imagine that you could have too much grease. Maybe the wrong type of grease. The grease that I used in the rear wheel grease fitti...

Re: Just acquired a 1983 GL1100 Interstate

Well, it runs. The carbs need to be synchronized and the idle needs to be adjusted, but I've been riding it around in the back yard without the plastics and light bars. It cranks right up, but I have to keep the choke up a little to keep it running. So far, everything works as it should. The tires a...

Re: Just acquired a 1983 GL1100 Interstate

Lol. It's the original pipes, but since the bike sat for 17 or so years, the pipes were rusted. One rusted completely in half. I just chopped off the other pipe to match it so I could test it. I tried with no pipes but fire shooting directly out of the headers started a small fire the first time I s...

Re: How to flush your cooling system

I think that there may be too much antifreeze in the radiator and it is just simply pushing out the excess. After it warms up, check the level and add more if necessary. On another note for the previous reply, I purchased Zerex Asian Vehicle Formula. It states that it is Silicate free. I'll post a p...

Re: Just acquired a 1983 GL1100 Interstate

***UPDATE*** I replaced both timing belts last night. Filling her back up with antifreeze and then on to the crank test. Fingers crossed... ****UPDATE #2**** It worked fine. Seemed to run better than before, but my carbs still need to be synchronized. That's next on my list. After that, its tires an...

Re: How to restore your Gas Gauge sending unit

FYI, I soaked mine in vinegar and it completely dissolved the arm leading down to the float. I purchased a new tank that came with the unit and it works fine. I did soak it in Evapo-Rust which is totally awesome. It only eats the rust. I also filled an old pill bottle and used that to soak rusted bo...

Re: How to rebuild your rear master cylinder

Will do. Thanks. Another guy that I found while browsing told me that the rear master cylinder can be replaced with one from any 1800 with minor fabrications. Anybody ever heard that?

I did not turn it. It was on the lift the entire time until I put the spacer in. I'm crossing my fingers hoping that it's not damaged.

Re: How to rebuild your rear master cylinder

Well, after reassembling everything, I attempted to bleed the brakes starting with the front right since it was furthest from the master cylinder. However, when I poured brake fluid into the reservoir, the master cylinder began to leak again. Ugh! Discovering that I will not be able to locate even a...

Re: How to remove and reinstall your rear wheel

Found a piece in the parts box that was left over. I don't recall seeing it in the pics above but I'm pretty sure that's what's missing. I have attached pics. I'll update after I torque it down to see if it spins freely.

Re: How to rebuild your rear master cylinder

All's well. Found 2 blockages, 1 in rear brake line, 1 in front right brake line. Cleared with a small Allen wrench, some thin cable, a small piece of thin solder, some brake cleaner, wd-40, compressed air, and. Mity-Vac. 3 hours on the front line.

Re: Just acquired a 1983 GL1100 Interstate

Found the blockage and removed it using a small Allen wrench and some brake cleaner, small strand cable, and thin solder wire for the banjo bolt end. Used compressed air to finally clear it and then used the Mity-Vac to suck the crud out by filling an empty pill bottle with brake cleaner and sucking...

Re: Just acquired a 1983 GL1100 Interstate

***UPDATE*** I disassembled the master cylinder twice. Cleaned it thoroughly. Blew compressed air through every orifice. Cleaned up the crud on the plunger that attaches to the clevis. Reassembled and it leaked worse than before. Realized when I took it apart the 2nd time that I had placed the inter...

Re: Just acquired a 1983 GL1100 Interstate

Nice. So you think the leak could be a clog? Well that sounds a lot more fixable than finding the unicorn master cylinder without having to buy a parts bike, which is not completely off the table just yet. Thanks. That will give me something to tear apart this weekend. I used a rebuild kit for the m...

Re: Just acquired a 1983 GL1100 Interstate

Thank you. I have no intention of stopping. I have not synced my carbs yet. I also need to adjust my idle. I am in the brake bleeding process now and I have discovered a second blockage in the line going to the front right caliper. I had a blockage in the rear caliper brake line but I was able to cl...

Re: How to rebuild your rear master cylinder

After cleaning out the brake line section to the rear caliper, I was able to bleed the rear brake. However, I am still unable to bleed the front right. Following the brake line from the right caliper, it attaches to a coupler that runs directly to the rear master cylinder. How do I bleed the right f...

Re: Just acquired a 1983 GL1100 Interstate

I was able to clear the blockage. I had some leftover garage door cable that I used to repair my shop garage door. It was just the right size to stick in the hole at one end. I also had to use a small Allen wrench to unclog the end. Once that was broken up, I stuck the cable in all the way to the ot...

Re: How to rebuild your rear master cylinder

It appears to be coming from inside the boot. It appears to be running down the threaded bolt that the jam nut and clevis attaches to. I vaguely remember my dad talking about doing some type of repairs with the rear brakes. I don't know what that entailed, so maybe I have inherited that issue and I'...

Re: Just acquired a 1983 GL1100 Interstate

I have rebuilt the rear master cylinder and it is leaking around the boot. On top of that, while trying to bleed the brakes, I found a blockage in the line between the rear caliper banjo bolt and the bracket that holds the adapter where it changes from soft hose to hard metal line. I've tried using ...

Re: GL1100A 1983 where is the radiator cap located

I've recently replaced my water pump on my 83 interstate. That part was easy. The most difficult part, in my opinion is removing the old gasket material. I used a 3M yellow scrubber head with an angle grinder. Advance Auto parts carries it. And, while you have the radiator off, it would be a perfect...

Re: How to rebuild your rear brake caliper

After looking at the parts manual, the front caliper seals are different from the rear seals. I'm going to try the seals that I have for the rear on the front to see if they will fit. Won't hurt before tossing them.
