Re: Static timing with test light

Ok, went ahead and pulled the engine again and figured out the problem. The poles were lined up perfectly, but the rotor wasn't seated completely into the weights. It was just riding on top, didn't think it felt right when I was putting it back together. You have a brain fart with this bike you pay ...

Re: Static timing with test light

I checked my timing and with the timing light hooked up to #1 cylinder and the f is lining up below the engine marks and it's actually closer to lining up with the 1. I tried it with the vacuum line hooked up and disconnected and I applied some vacuum, all with the same result. This is with the engi...

Re: Static timing with test light

I have one and that was my plan. I can hear it advance when I unplug and plug in the vacuum hose when it's running. Am curious to see if it holds vacuum.

Re: Static timing with test light

So, with the engine simply spinning and my test light attached to #1 I'll see the f1 mark line up in the hole? If I apply vacuum what mark lines up or will I just see it move? Guess I can run the fuel out of the bowls to keep it from firing, eh?

Re: Static timing with test light

Just wanted to double-check timing, having carb issues after rebuild. Had to Frankenstein a rack from 2 w/ broken carbs. Found a full rack from an 83 that looked good on eBay for $100. Going to start over with that rack, also think I'm on the right track with charging system, reworked the stator to ...

Static timing with test light

If you set the engine at f1 with the ignition on, will it trigger one or more of the coil lead wires to check and see if your poles are alligned? If so which wires?

Re: Brand new stator crapped out

10-4. Also, does it matter if you mix up the yellow wires at the stator connection, or do they all do the same thing?

Re: Brand new stator crapped out

If charging at too high a voltage sounds like the "sense" lead to the regulator is not getting a good read on the battery voltage (bad connection somewhere).

which wire is the "sense lead"? I looked at the schematic and could never find where the black wire went back to positive.

Re: Brand new stator crapped out

Should the black wire be grounded with all the switches open? That was the only wire besides the green wires that grounded. Had continuity between all the yellow wires and the red with the positive battery terminal.

Re: Brand new stator crapped out

So I should check the stator leads at the reg/rec 1st and make sure I'm getting 50vac? Then go from there eh. Thought it was supposed to be at least 75vac @ 3000rpm. That's what I saw on a YouTube test.

Brand new stator crapped out

Replaced my bad stator with a Rick's stator along with a new reg/rec. Checked to make sure it wasn't grounding out after install and it wasn't. After rebuilding the carbs and starting to make progress getting it balanced I checked the voltage and it was charging at just over 16v. Thought it might be...

Re: Idle mixture screw settings

I pulled the motor twice already. Had to replace stator. I'm 99% sure my pin didn't fall out since the rotor would only fit on the shaft one way and seated itself. Played with idle mix and balance, improved some still backfiring. Think I might have adjusted my valve clearance too tight.

Re: Idle mixture screw settings

I thought I read somewhere you could access the pg with the engine in the frame. Don't see how this is possible.

Re: Idle mixture screw settings

Hoosier, I'm pretty sure he was talking about the pin on the other side of the shaft that the rotor seats on.

Re: Idle mixture screw settings

Going to double check the pg this weekend. Will I be able to feel or see the pin when I pull the rotor? Hoping to leave the engine in and access the pg with battery box out. Also, do the 2 poles line up exactly at td1? Seems like they were a little offset. My idle mix tool came in yesterday, so will...

Re: Idle mixture screw settings

Found a diagram. Do the pins frequently fall off the shaft when you disassemble? Are they pressed in or loose? It seemed to seat itself and not move side to side when I put it back together and the marks lined up the same at top dead.

Re: Idle mixture screw settings

Didn't notice a pin. Do you mean a woodruff key? It seemed to slot itself back in the same way it came out. Any pictures or diagrams I can refer to?

Idle mixture screw settings

Just got my bike back together after pulling the engine and replacing bad stator. I went ahead and replaced the timing belts and rebuilt the carbs. Had to replace the #1 carb with one off a 1982 rack after my easy out broke off in the low speed jet. I set all my mixture screws at 2 turns out accordi...

Re: GL1500 Transmission Test

If this works, you can hear the snapping sound above the engine. Ignore how dirty the bike is, it was stuck in a shed for 5 months while I was looking for an engine. bjnjzLOSvZY Was this your 98? Thought they fixed the problem in 97. Been looking at a few 1500's and thought 97 and newer was the ans...

Gotcha. The B string I was using is .39mm. The E is .32mm, should be the ticket. Thanks

Re: The old slow jets again....sigh

Which guitar string passes through the idle jet when it is clean? Had some extra B string(second thinnest) and it wouldn't pass through the center hole, but passed through the side holes easily. Guess I'll try the high E string after some more soaking.

Re: The old slow jets again....sigh

Thanks, found a complete assembly off an 83 on ebay for $150. Is the only difference the jets, are other parts interchangeable? Hopefully I can just clean and sync the new ones.
