Re: GL1100 carbs... slider cap orientation

on both my wings i have the "keihin" mounted outboard. several road rides with wing1 and a few round-the-block test rides with wing2 revealed no running issues whatsoever.

"brilliant" idea ! :D
even down on your hands and knees, it can be tough to figure out what's going on if you have a dirty sight glass.
the flash of the camera provides the very thing you need most ... light.

thanks for the feedback guys. as a die-hard skinflint i often need to be steered away from bad purchases.
as painful as honda prices are, it beats tossing $7.00 away for a piece of junk.

Re: newbie just purchased 1985 1100 Aspencade

2 comments and then i'll turn you over to those more qualified ... 1) carbs should not have to be "resynced" after a shop supposedly overhauled and synced them; so something does not add up there. in fact, syncing only affects idle, whereas your problem seems to be under load, so the shop is out to ...

aftermarket starter solenoids

i am in need of a starter solenoid (actually 2).
i see aftermarket ones on ebay for prices that suggest they are probably junk.
anybody have any experience using these ?

thanks, hondog !
while that wasn't the exact link i was looking for it does give me a part number to work with.
also, i really liked the partsnmore site ... lots of good pics as well as a good selection of bits and pieces for these old bikes.
thanks again,

source for 2.8 x 1.2 pilot screw o-rings ?

a while back i found a link to a source for these ... a packet of 25 or something like that. for some reason i thought i would easily find it when i was ready to order so i didn't bother to bookmark it ...DUH !!!!! have been searching ebay and the closest i can find is either 3.0 x 1.2 or 2.8 x 1.6....

i know that people like their nakeds, but i wouldn't feel comfortable without engine crash guards on mine.
these old wings have got to be head, shoulders, and torso above any other bike in terms of bang for the buck ... but don't tell anybody !

Re: Pre Carb Rebuild Questions

nice job getting it out ! do you still have a broken easy-out to deal with, or does the kit come with new jets ? by the way, i was having a bad time trying to clean one of those slow jets until i finally did what was suggested to me, bought a high "e" guitar string. it is just the ticket for cleanin...

Re: heavy whitish smoke (both sides) GL1100A

inlet needle(s) stuck open, flooding the carbs. gonna have to remove/clean/bench test.
as for the knocking, these engines can make awful sounds until the carbs are synced, so i wouldn't worry about that right now.

i love a good resurrection !
i don't see where anyone has mentioned it, but i have read that certainly harley davidson mufflers can be fairly easily adapted for use on these bikes. they are all over craigslist for cheap because the harley guys take them off when new.
keep up the good work.

Re: heavy whitish smoke (both sides) GL1100A

yes, you can. the most worrisome part, to me, is always the TINY washers and o-rings under the pilot jet screws. they are easily dropped and then good luck finding them. then there is always the potential for tearing the tiny rubber o-rings during extraction. if you think you have a stuck inlet valv...

Re: pilot screw setting ...what year carbs do i have ?

DOH ! just realized that i still have the frame ... it's a 1982.
the question is still valid though ... without a frame or engine as a reference, is there a way to tell what year carbs one has ?

pilot screw setting ...what year carbs do i have ?

in the final stages of re-assembling a set of carbs that i got off craigslist. for initial pilot screw setting the FSM says 1 1/4 turn out for 1980 - 1981, 3 turns out for 1982 (doesn't mention 1983 even though my manual is for 80-83). problem is, i cant recall the year of the parts bike that i pull...

Re: new to me

just to be clear, if it's a 1980 it's a gl1100, not a gl1000. you don't have to buy belts that come in a honda package with a honda price tag. gates t274 (or any of their competitors) is about half the price. same goes for some other parts like thermostat, coolant hoses and more. there's a great lis...

Re: Ever got rid of a bike you wish you hadn't?

sort of ... around 1996 my brother bought a brand new harley and sold me his 1980 yamaha 650 for a "brothers" price. he owned that bike from new and had babied it; it never spent a night of it's life outside. i rode it that summer and then exited the motorcycle world until recently. i left it outsid...

Re: buy tires in usa; bring to canada

looks like FortNine is emerging as the winner. good prices, delivered to my door, no provincial sales tax since it is from another province and no border line-ups/hassles. still have to investigate local retailers though; buying local is always a good idea, but in the end, money talks. not expecting...

Re: buy tires in usa; bring to canada

have to agree with you there, viking. messing with border agents sounds like a recipe for a bad day. i'd rather declare what i bought and hope i get the casual wave through. besides, from the bit of googling i did, i don't see where any duty is payable on tires. seems strange to me. looking into it ...

thanks, wingadmin. whatever delicate metal tube was once attached to the altimeter is completely gone. guess i will have to live without one like 99.9% of the bikes out there. temperature gauge appears to be in a similar state; there is an insulated copper lead but the sensor end appears to have bee...

buy tires in usa; bring to canada

obviously i am looking for feedback from canadian residents here ... looks like a very substantial savings to be had by buying tires in the usa (i need 2 and my brother needs 2 so it's not like i am committing a whole day/gas/possibly lengthy border line-up just to save $50). my question is, what ha...

Re: How to remove, rebuild and reinstall your starter

DenverWinger has the right idea. in fact, for not a lot more than the price of buying 2 brushes online plus freight they could probably do a full rebuild and you would have a starter that's good for another 20 years. i have had some success with following the how-to on brush replacement/starter clea...
