Re: 75 GL1000

Unless you’re able to see that it can be brought to life easily, $400 is the most I’d pay. I haven’t heard of fair ones going for $4000. It’s very easy to sink a grand into them and still have an old bike. If it’s been sitting you’re looking at lots to rule it safe. People get them going for less, b...

Re: carb question

Are you sure you have decent compression in that cylinder? A compression tester is nice, but holding your finger over the spark plug hole and comparing it to the one next to it would be easier than switching the carbs. Also check spark? Swap the spark plug to another hole and see if it follows the p...

Re: Boggy acceleration heavy vibration

12’s don’t have a real choke, it’s a starter jet to dump more fuel. If you’re hearing something like a leak on the right side, investigate that a bit before a full tear down. Try waving a propane torch around the intake runners where they meet the head. (Have a fire extinguisher handy or really big ...

Re: CRAZY engine GREMLIN!!??

What dingdong said. If it does it again, you could carefully pull the cable on the starter to see if it stops. Just remember it is a live cable.

There have been reports of the knockoff versions having the wrong teeth or gear to work properly.

Re: chasing a miss

You might be able to narrow your focus on the carb's leaks by conducting an observation of where it’s leaking. With everything dry, put a piece of paper towel cut to fit flatly in the plenum floor and turn on the fuel to see where it gets wet first. Along the plenum seams or from a particular carb c...

I have had 2-3 bad NGK plugs straight from the box. If I suspect one of going bad, I swap it and see if the miss follows the plug.

Re: Convert to a Naked 1100

The 1000 ears are for 37mm forks, the 1100 has 39mm forks. They can be made work by slightly enlarging the openings and using o-rings to cushion the mounting places or cutting down 1100 bushing to suit. I have also seen people slit them and spread them. I cannot recall how they attached them. Probab...

Re: vinegar or carb cleaner ?

For boiling, recommendations are distilled water. The heat does the work.

Berryman’s B12 works well, but don’t get it on rubber bits. I use it on a q-tip to cosmetically clean up the exterior while still on the bike.

Re: Center Stand

Some have shortened the stand to make it easier to put it on and roll it off. Some however do get corroded and begin twisting forward. On one of mine it was getting harder and harder to get off the center stand before I finally crawled under and saw the crossmember the stand is attached to tearing a...

Re: 1200 Power Planet into 79 GL1000 Frame

The other part I neglected to include, among others, but you may know, is the 79 has a 3.40 final drive. The 1200 has a 2.83 so to help it has an even lower first gear, but a taller fifth gear/overdrive. It screams pretty quick off the line. If you aren’t ready, it will pull the bars right out of yo...

Re: 1200 Power Planet into 79 GL1000 Frame

Several have done it, myself included. The 85-87 1200 will almost drop in. It varies from bike to bike likely due to jig differences at the factory. Mine needed a little love from a hammer where the stator is closest to the frame, but others haven’t had to do that. It is tight by the lower left rear...

Re: How to do the VALVE ON MY 84 1200 Aspencade ?

Or the adjusters may need to be cleaned. They have small holes for oil to flow and when plugged can cause the ticking sound you describe. A broken valve spring could do it. A broken rocker housing could do it. The manual covers how to do this and it could be done in situ. The valve adjusters are a d...

Re: How to do the VALVE ON MY 84 1200 Aspencade ?

It depends on your comfort level with tools and the manual. Do you have a shop manual? If you don’t do your own work, year older bikes can become quite expensive. I have not found any good tutorials on the 1200 heads/valves. The manual has some info. If the bike sat a while, the adjusters can need p...

Measuring for valve adjust shims

I posted this at NGW but looking for advice from 1200 guys on this. I do not have the special tool required for measuring clearance of whether to shim or not. It appears that there is a shelf in the rocker arm shaft that the tool rests on. I have the exact measurements of the tool and think I could ...

Re: If it sounds like the valves are too loose...

Did you have good look at the valve springs? The inner one is hard to see, but a broken spring, while rare, could cause this. I can’t recall if I posted this already, but a leaking exhaust donut can sound like a tick. A good ear would be able to tell if it was motor noise or from underneath the cyli...

To remove the flange, take out a few of the brake rotor studs out on the opposite side and use a punch to tap the flange.

Likely coil or pulse generator. Easiest and best would be to have spare parts to substitute in and find which it is by elimination. The book says to ohm the coils and pulse generators, but others with far more knowledge than me have found resistance checks to be poor. C3DDB3D2-0513-4F77-8A4D-EED523E...
