Re: Wanted: 1st Gen 1800 aftermarket slip -on mufflers

I would urge you to be very careful before spending money on louder exhausts! The Honda engineers designed the GL1800 to be as quiet as possible so noise would not bother riders. It is going to be very hard to add slip-ons that make more noise and either have no effect on performance or a minimal re...

Re: GoldwingsDocs Gathering Sep 22-24, 2017

Very interested in attending this event. We're new to Goldwing as we just recently sold our Harley and bought a classic 95 Goldwing trike, which we are restoring. We're from southern New Mexico so it would be quite an adventure to see the beautiful areas north and east of us. Let us know where the ...

Re: Newbie Questions

Welcome to the Forum from VA! You are moving from a great sport toured to a luxury tourer. The first difference is the weight as the GL1800 is a lot heavier than the RT. Both bikes have good acceleration and braking (I think the Wing has the better brakes). As far as suspension, well the RT probably...

Re: Highway gear

Owners of the GL1800 have been wishing for a sixth gear or overdrive sine the bike came out in 2001. The suggestion has been made to Honda many times in many different ways. There is no question fuel mileage drops when riding above 3000rpms. But the engine and tranny can go all day a lot faster than...

Re: Picking up and Riding 800 miles

Ditto on Johnyy Smoke'scomments. When you check the tires make sure you pay a lot of attention to tire psi and the manufacture date. And I would check that tire pressure the next morning before heading out. I would certainly ask for all maintenance records and even the tech or service manage who pro...

Re: Loose heel-toe shifter

The best suggestion I can make with any heel-toe shifter is to get rid of it and install the stock lever. Tends to work better over time! Plus if Honda had felt the best way was to use a heel-toe shifter they would have designed it that way! They did so on the VTX models so they obviously know how!

Re: Confused

I think we need to look at this situation from the dealers perspective. He came and got the bike, took it to his shop and put a new tire on the rear( it is not a super difficult job, but not that easy either) and what did he charge you? You didn't mention any cost so I assume ( Not a good thing to d...

Welcome Mountain Rider from VA! Thank you for your service, we live and ride in a free country thanks to you! Sounds like you could put together quite a riding group with your family! Now if you all could just schedule a ride together that would be very neat! Yes, you do live in a great area for rid...

Re: Myrtle Beach, SC. trip

Hey DingDong! Way back in the late '70s I went to Myrtle Beach and camped right on the beach in sight of the ocean with my van. Do they still allow this? I believe it was an official campground on the beach. That really brings back memories! I remember doing that at Ocean City, MD and VA Beach amon...

I would recommend getting and reading both the Owners Manual and the Factory Service Manual. You may be able to find them online and download them. Or you can go to: www.helminc.com They sell Honda publications for most Honda products with the support of Honda. Their books are just like the original...

Reference the camera, if the police don't have it, check with the wrecking service that towed the bike and let them know you are going to file a report with the police about the camera.

Re: Tire pressure shinko 712

I went to the Shinko site hoping to find their recommended tire pressure for that tire and all they list is a max pressure of 40psi. Based on that and the Honda recommended tire pressures I would probably pick a number between the two and start with that. I would then add a couple lbs at a time and ...

I am glad to see that you are okay? Make sure of that especially a concussion! But it is great that you are up and about! I understand the financial end of fixing up the old bike, but I honestly would always be worried that something more serious was damaged even if I put it back together! I would g...

Re: Myrtle Beach, SC. trip

Sorry about the rain but it is just part of touring although you did the smart thing and stopped for the night rather than pushing your luck! The Tail of the Dragon offers 318 turns in 11 miles which makes it a neat place to ride. Unfortunately as you note many folks show up there with no idea how t...

Sorry to hear of your misfortune! Sort of unusual to steal an older Gold wing or any Wing for that matter. Re: Aftermarket Leather Seat

Have you contacted Corbin for any recommendations from them? Also there are waterproof covers you can buy to protect any seat from the rain. But the advantage in this area goes to Honda and the stock seat on the GL1800 as it repels water very well.

If you have to do carb work I recommend the rebuild kit from Randakks. He sells a lot of stuff for old Wings. Do you still have that Virago 1100? My wife had one for years and rode it all over the east and as far west as Glacier National Park. It was a great bike, and when I sold it I made money but...

Don't forget to get figures from Kelly Blue Book and NADA's books/guides on pricing. You might also contact your credit union and a couple banks to see what they would loan you to buy a similar bike. Get everything in writing and reference your sources of information so the insurance company can fin...

Hello Ivan161, Welcome to the Forum from Virginina, USA! Just curious, do you have Honda dealers or do you have to locate or make parts on your own! Even with dealers here, parts are generally not available for bikes or any vehicles ten years after manufacture date. Fortunately we do have aftermarke...

Very unusual for J&M to not want to sell you the headset and ship it to you for installation! I have bought many kits over the years. Yes, they do a great job of installations but I have never heard of it being mandatory. You might also contact Sierra Electronics as they sell and install J&M product...

I would encourage you to consider a full face--offers more protection! I prefer the Arai but you have to find the helmet that best fits your head. Different manufacturers build their helmets for different style heads and it is very important to find one that is comfortable so you can wear it all day!
