Re: How to replace your speedometer cable

My '83 1100i is squealing like hell and the speed needle jumps everywhere. Funny that I was in a 25 zone doing 120 :D :D . But, should I replace it or simply try re-lubing it? If replacement needs to happen, any ideas (besides ebay) where to get a new one?? Thanks This is a classic case of a speedo...

Re: How to replace your speedometer cable

I just bought a used 1982 Honda Goldwing GL1100 Interstate from an Auction. After getting this on the road, I noticed that the speedometer is not working. I just read this article on How to Replace a Speedometer Cable.. Although it is pretty in-expense, but could this be any other problem beside th...

Cold weather and emphysema don't get along together - found out last week that my persistent cough and shortness of breath is in fact a mild case of emphysema - and I'm a non-smoker!
Time to replace those rings!!

This would be for inventory purposes, as they interchange perfectly, though performance would be a bit different. Honda may have even consolidated P/N's for that reason as well.

Re: Rear Shocks and front forks

Hey Cosmo - but first, have you attended to all those running gear issues I mentioned? Glad you are so informed as to how poorly I maintain my motorcycles. Hadn't realised that that information had made it past even the Mason-Dixon line. Note that going from a modern Triumph (or any Ducati) to a vi...

Re: Rear Shocks and front forks

Try merging onto I-90 from northbound 53 at 90 mph. The hinge is real, though better than the '87 FLHS I owned a while back. And scads better than the 650 Tempter, which I got rid of VERY shortly after it wobbled 'round a mild corner at slow(ish) speeds. IMHO, there was no Japanese bike able to go '...

Re: Rear Shocks and front forks

I have two running '83 Aspys. one stock, and one modified a bit. The main bike has Progressive suspension front and rear and easily out-handles and out-rides the stocker. Ride height is increased with Progressive rear (air) shocks. As to the handling: yes, these are more capable than you would, at f...

When it cuts out, chop throttle and cut the ignition. Check fuel level in the carbs. That should point you in a direction to look.

Have you thought about aftermarket?? Shipping a used set might prove a bit more costly as those of us who have these (I do), do not have an account that allows for reduced shipping.

Re: Strange electrical problem

I might note that a bad starter solenoid would cause the same symptoms (except the battery would still show voltage). The solenoid disconnects the lights before it connects the starter. Thus, if it was working halfway, everything else would go dead, but the starter would not quite engage. Not so. T...

Re: Strange electrical problem

I've had this happen a few times. Every time this has happened, it was a connection, usually battery cable, that has either become loose, or electrically non-conductive. The fix has almost always been to disconnect the battery, clean the terminals and cables, and reconnect. Every time. Cosmo P.S. I ...

Clean plug, misfire AND sweet smell?? Definitely head gasket. If it's your first one, and you have not fair extensive experience around engines, pay someone you can trust. The job entails a LOT of work, and if done improperly, can ruin the engine, worst case; and need to be redone best case. By a lo...

Weak coils imitate a rich mixture.

I weld a nut to the remainder, then back it out as if it were a bolt.

If you're close, I can do this.

Re: Fuel Gauge Help

Measure resistances.
Or just try it outside the tank, you cannot harm the gauge, it just won't read correctly if it's wrong.

BTW, the different '83 P/N would be for the digital dash on the Aspencade.

Re: Swapping Electronic Cruise Control

Best to look in the shop manual and see what and where all the components are, and whether they are integrated (I kinda doubt it, for 1987). If the option was indeed an add-on (many were in that era and before), you can then add it to your bike.

I will also advise against the Metzler, but for a different reason: the handling went south after a while, after the edges got very scalloped. This didn't happen with any other tire I have used, even a cheap Chinese Shinko. I have Dunlops on my bike right now, and am happy.

Head gaskets that are leaking will not seal again.
I seem to recall that you can put those in wrong side round, perhaps that was done. The difference, if I recall correctly, was the coolant passage.

My OEM mirrors were getting floppy, so I simply removed them, took the pivot apart, smeared valve grinding compound on the rounded pivots, and reassembled. No more flop.

I worked at a dealer. Sure, their prices are high, however, at least at the dealer group where I worked, the technicians were really top notch. Plus, they work all day, every day on your particular car, therefore knowing the ins and outs, ups and downs of your particular car. A private shop, well, i...
