In July 1974, I went on a two week camping trip with my Aunt and Uncle and two cousins 10 and 12. I was 25 and in the AF. We camped at Possum Kingdom Lake in East Texas. We had my Honda Trail 90 and two of theirs plus a trail 70. One day we were on the bikes and stopped for gas and snacks and up drove a new GL 1000. I was in wonderment watching him fill up the bike as I looked over that flat 4 cylinder and drive shaft, etc. At that time, I also had a Honda CB 350 to go along with my 90. Five months later I get married sell the 350. But kept the Trail 90.
We went to Germany a year later for 3 years. Upon our return to San Antonio, I bought a Hondamatic 450 that I could afford after selling the 90. But, I always googled over the Goldwings. Then Nov. 1980, I sold the 450A and bought a used 1977 GL 1000. I rode that bike every where. It had 37k miles when I bought it and 97k when I sold it in 1982 before going to Germany, again. I became a member of GWRRA in 81 and kept up with Goldwings and their changes through Wing World. But, while in Germany, I owned a 1982 BMW R80RT and a Honda Magna 750. Upon my return to San Antonio (1990) the second time, I went to the Dealer and bought a used GL 1100 and loved it. After putting 37k miles on that bike I bought a used 1992 GL1500 in mint condition. I put 112k miles on that bike and working at a Dealer was able to purchase at employee cost the first 2001 GL1800 sold in San Antonio. Four years and 46k miles later a lady runs over it while parked and totalled it. I rode Harleys after that until 2017 when I found my 2005 1800 with only 19k on the odometer. This bike will probably be my last now that I'm 70.

Cheep. No, I'm not practicing sparrow noises. It has 104K and has ran well for the 150 miles I've had it. Doesn't look like it was owned by a perfectionist. Still, it was a lot of bike for what I paid. I had a '78 GW that my wife bought me ten years ago from her B-I-L that had 42K but didn't run as well as this one. This 1986 Aspencade feels a lot heavier than the '78. Makes my 1200 Sportster feel like a motorbike. The Wing is so much nicer on the highway than the HD. Glad I bought it

Sheer economics.

I used to be employed at an HD dealership. I rode all the bikes, from stock to crazy power and handling mods.

Favourite was the road glide, which is more or less analogous to a GL1500.

Paid $2700CAD for my 'wing. ZERO complaints. It has 263,000km on it, of which I have put on about 1,000. Paint is great, most everything works. Making small improvements as I do the maintenance it has been denied by the last owner or 2.

$100/1000km is a fair price for an experienced MC I suppose.

To get into a 'glide I am looking at around $15k for a similarly equipped unit.

I refuse to make payments on a frivolous toy, which at this point in my life is exactly what a motorcycle represents. Paid cash, /story.
It doesn't matter what you ride, as long as you have your knees to the breeze.

Like some have said Economics. I've been a big Harley fan and at one point had 3 of them. I turned 70 this year and I thought my riding days were numbered, I just wasn't feeling a confident as I used to and the bikes were getting heavier with each passing year. I had pretty much given up riding in the mountains.
A good friend (who is 10 years my junior) came by one day with a brand new Tri-glide. He told me to take it out for a spin, I was reluctant it being brand new off the show room floor but I did take it out and found that riding a trike was a lot easier. But the problem was we were not in a position to afford a Harley. I also have a couple of friends who are big fans of the Goldwing and they have tried to get me to try the Goldwing in the past, but when my buddy who is riding the Tri-glide suggested I try a Goldwing and said "who knows you may like it." So I took a Goldwing trike out for a test spin and low and behold I did enjoy it, even more the riding the Tri-glide. So I started looking and found the 2003 with the CSC Cobra kit installed I fell in love with it. It's had a few problems but I've been getting everything to work, except the CB, so I'm pretty happy with it. I'm glad I went with the Goldwing and wish I had done it years ago.

The ownership of my Hondog came just by chance. I was looking to get an alternative bike to ride that I didn't need to worry about leaving parked in public. Really just a beater to use in place of any of my good bikes. I didn't care what make of Japanese bike I ended up with. A friend sent me an email from a co-worker who was renting garage space from his neighbor and in the same garage was a 1980 GL1100 the homeowner was trying to sell. He had bought a new Victory and wanted to dispose of the old Wing now. I went to see it and realized it really was a bit of a dog, but many of you know what it's like looking at a bike that needs help and you start ignoring your better judgement and see it as potential to save another neglected motorcycle soul. A deal was struck and I took the bike home. This turned out to be the most complicated bike I had owned up to that point. Shaft drive, water cooling, and 4 carburetors was a learning experience. I did it right though and discovered this GoldwingDocs website right away. A factory shop manual was the first purchase and off I went from there. It's been a couple of years and the old Hondog is like a part of the family now. It's funny how something can start out as a disposable bike for temporary use that I had no attachment to and turn into a highly valued bike that I could never see myself selling now. These Goldwings sure grow on you and if you can appreciate the engineering that went into them and the quality of construction they were built with it's no wonder they have lasted for so many decades. My only problem now is I still need to find a beater bike again because this GL1100 is as nice as any of my good bikes are. :lol:

I had had british bikes only … Noton Commandos or Triumph Tridents. Then in 1995, was riding with a buddy, he on his '86 HDFLH-TC and me on my '74 Trident, and we had our wives. Wife mentioned she wished the seat wasn't so hard. I started looking …. at HDs actually. My buddy was also my Sgt. at work. He suggested I look at a GL1200 SEi near by. I looked, but it was a rough bike having sat out in the weather, and the guy wanted too much. Next week, I was at the academy instructing and during a break, mentioned to a fellow instructor that I needed a Gold Wing. He mentioned that he knew an agent wanting to sell an '85 … but it was down near the beach. I finished the week at Richmond, came home on Friday evening and wife and I had a dinner with my Sgt and his wife Saturday. I mentioned the agent and the '85 I was gonna call about, Sgt said he trooped with the agent on Eastern Shore in the '60s. A call was made. Monday, all 4 of us in his suburban pulling my trailer drove from western part of Va. to Va. Beach pulling a trailer, bought the 1200 then and brung her home up 64 to 81 to home. Sold the 1200 just this summer.

Bought the trike in 2004, first laid eyes on it in early 1998, then it was made a trike in summer, it was offered for sale in 2004.

So when I got my very first bike a GL500I, in 1991, the salesman said if I fed it premium fuel and kept washing it it would grow into a Goldwing. Well On April 19 2019 it finally grew into an 87 GL1200A. What a sweet riding machine.

I am not knocking Harley's but on two different Harleys I've set off on road trips and had break downs. I've had three Gold Wings and NEVER failed to complete my trips with nothing more than a flat tire. I've put over 100K on two of them and working hard to do that to my current one. I just love Honda reliability.

I had a Honda 1100 Spirit and found it to be in the running for the most uncomfortable ride ever made. The wife definitely agreed. We went to test ride a used 2003 GL1800 Audio Level and fell in love with it. We kept it for a couple years - traded it for a used 2008 several years later and we've put ~150K on GL1800's total.

BTW, I wanted to thank Goldwing Docs for the UltraGard Half Cover I won in Aug. Mine was fairly worn out so the timing couldn't have been better. Thanks!!

I have a knee that needs replaced and I found a low mile 2000 CSC bike that makes 2 up riding safer

Early Goldwings are legendary. I'm old and my Dad bought this w/ 4,500 mile on it in 1997. He passed, I retired and took it out of retirement. Wondermous bike I have always had, and still have four but this is my "Go To" favorite. Goes, stops and handles the twisties better than one might expect. Gotta up grade shocks and front fork oil though !!

This is the very reason why I started looking to sell and then traded out my 83 Aspencade for a 2006 Suzuki C50T. I couldn't ride more than a few miles without my knee feeling like it was on fire due to the angle. Plus the "new" bike is half the weight and I don't trust my knee on a good day.
My wife is the greatest - she won't let me sell my bike - I'm less grumpy when I ride...

Price kept dropping on a non-running GL1100 Goldwing literally a few blocks away. Finally got to the point where I looked at it and pushed it home. Fixed it up, and now it is my preferred motorcycle.

May be converting it back to the standard motorcycle it started out as. (Currently has a Vetter fairing.)

Back in 1982 I bought a Honda CB750 from an acquaintance for $500.00. Later I traded it in when I bought a new 1983 Kawasaki 750 Ninja. Some year later I sold it to a friend for $1000.00. Speed forward to 2008. I wanted another bike for my 50th birthday, but bought an rv instead. However, I still wanted a bike. I thought I'd get a Harley and did all the research. But one day I ran into a guy that had a black goldwing and asked him what he thought about his bike. One thing he said convinced the wing was the way to go - 220k miles. My seach for a wing was on. I happened upon a Goldwing repair shop (Wingnut, Vallejo,CA) and began to take to Don, the owner. Well, one thing lead to another and I bought a Cherry Red 1500 from Lonny, a mechanic at Don's shop. I knew the bike was for me when I saw the code on the key - B50. My name is Bobby! I still have the bike, which always gets stares when riding and when parked. It a keeper!

I bought my ‘06 after I scared myself **** on my ‘05 FJR in New Mexico. Story for a different time. Bought my ‘08 because I needed a bike with cruise control and it was at the right price.

I bought my first Goldwing, trying to trade bij CB750C with vetter windshield and krauser trunk set, want to buy a CB900, ore KAWA GTR 1000, but could not agree because I want to keep the Vetter windshield , then he show me a GL1100 Aspencade, I took this bike out for a testdrive, and bought it. Then I was about 25 Years old :) Then things go different, I trade it against a Mitsubishi Spacawagon (that is a car) biggest mistake in my life....Didn't drive a Motorcycle for 3 ore 4 years. Then I bought a Honda PC800 because it was cheap, turns out to be a very lovely bike, and give me great satisfaction. On an evening I hit a rock and get injured bike -total loss- so I bought a Pan European 1100 oh, this was a great bike but after 2 months I told my wife "my next bike will be a Gold-wing" and two months later I was hit by a car, after 3 months I could ride again an bought my a GL1500 1988 at a certain moment the bike should have big maintaining so i trade it against my GL1800 2002 , in the mean time this bike and I drove 125.000 KM, (ODO 175000) great bike, runs suerB great comfort, SUPER reliable -> no mechanical issues at all!!! So I drive further on to 200.000 KM and than we will see wat is coming up next: an other bike ore 300.000KM :D

As last post. Bullet proof. I have had a few touring bike. 86 Yama Venture 1300. 2000 Kawi Voyager 1200. But nothing beat the wing. Getting older (61) I needed auto cruise for old hands. Throttle lock just doesn't cut it especially if I am towing my trailer. The comy ride for my old body. Reverse due to getting harder to back up big bikes with my legs. Venture was a bugger if there was any kind of slope. No reverse. Ease of putting on center stand. Couldn't do Venture by myself. Well centered weight. Venture was top heavy as hell. Just love and have always loved my 88 gl1500.

In 2015 after kids grew up and moved out I bought a 2002 VTX1800. Great bike, smooth and fast right from the factory. Not enough storage with aftermarket saddle bags. Rented a Harley Ultra for a Black Hills ride. Rode OK but not much power for a brand new top of the line bike. Now I knew why all the Harley owners spent a lot of extra money on exhaust and tuning before they leave the dealer. And every time I pulled over to take a picture I had to shut the Harley off because the bike shook too much. Would Harley owners accept a new unbalanced engine in any other item they buy. Car, Truck, Boat, Lawn mower...? I never got an answer from them but did get weird looks.

I had been reading about Goldwings and asking Goldwing owners about their bikes. Spring 2016 came and I saw a used Red 2004 with 22k on it. Took it for a test ride with my wife. I knew after the first mile this would be the bike for me. Put close to 24k miles on it the last 3 years. I have never wanted a different bike since I bought it. Smooth, reliable and too me it is sporty as it handles great.

I am 55 years old and I also have a Suzuki DRZ400S that run down the dirt and gravel roads with.

I loved to ride with the wind in your face when younger... I really didn't like to do chain maintenance ... you lube the chain wash the bike... then sling the lube all over the rear tire... yuck ... the news of a shaft drive with a water cooled engine appealed to me... didn't want to buy the first or second year of production so in 78 bought one off the showroom floor ... and been hooked ever since

I owned the Suzuki GS-550 for 20 years, It was a good bike, even took me cross country a couple times. But I certainly don't miss chain maintenance!

All I have to say why did you buy a Goldwing, walk around and look at the total package.
Why did you buy a Goldwing just sit on the seat.
Why did you buy a Goldwing just ride it.
Bonus question. Have your better half sit on it and explain to her all the options. That is why you bought a Goldwing.
Plus it's only real competition is the (bar & shield) that looks like it was put together in a garage from a bag of parts. Then we have the other BMW that looks like aliens stopped here, went camping and forgot their put bike when they left. Lastly nothing lasts longer with fewer repairs. That is my opinion and I am sticking with it, have owned a 1500 for 20 years and now have an 1800, so far
Only maintenance no repairs what other bike can you say that about.😁

Well said Road Ranger.... you crossed the t’s and dotted the i’s ... I remember when I bought the 78 model and met up with my Harley-Davidson friends they were calling it a technical logically wonder with a water cooled engine... a fuel pump...and shaft drive ... I smiled at them as they slide a drip pan under the engine ;)
