Let There Be Light(s)

Part of the GL 1000 do over is the installation of a complete Vetter outfit. I stripped the panels off of the luggage to refinish them and to repair some minor damage to one bag lid. In the meantime, I took a good look at the travel trunk lights.

Overall, they weren't bad except for two cracked lens.

I had looked everywhere for replacement lens, complete lights, whatever. I found a couple problems.
1) They are out of production. Not surprising.
2) Nobody makes 3 1/2" diameter lights regardless of incandescent or LED. I mean NOBODY!
Did I mention they were long out of production?

So, I looked into alternative lighting and came across these from an eBay seller. They are LED surface mount.

Today, I mounted them. I also looked at the reflectors on the sides of the trunk. Kinda lame.

This is what they look like now. Clearance lights.

So, with the lights out from the rear of the trunk, this is what you would have seen.

After the mounting and careful alignment, along with a bit of drilling, here they are.

They are both tail & stop/turn. I haven't decided on whether they are going to be my rear turn signals or brake lights yet. I have other lights coming and have a couple other ideas. By the by, the holes behind them from the original lights are sealed with automotive drip check sealant. No water is getting into this trunk.

Oh, doing something like this doesn't have to be expensive. My total investment, less than $35.

Man I had one of those Vetter trunks that was on a CBX I bought. Can't remember but I think I tossed it in the trash.

That is a nice improvement. I took the Vetter Trunk off of my bike and I miss it. Those things hold a lot of stuff.

Nice job! It's always good to have bright lights on the back - especially with so many 'distracted' cage drivers on the road these days...

These showed up in the mail yesterday.

I had ordered these through eBay from a Hong Kong seller along with several different LED bulb varieties. As much as I hate to admit it, the prices were too good to pass up on. I do wish they were made here, though.

What I'm considering is mounting these on the back of the saddlebags in place of the original turn signals. If I use quick connects like trailer connectors, it won't hamper removal of the bags. These would also double as tail lights, so they serve another duty as well. All the lights being LED won't cause any issues with the electrical system.

Gotta have pix when you get them on! Will really improve on the older lights. Can't wait to see the difference.
