I've been a member for 8 years now nere in Mesa AZ. I drive a 1982 GL1100 with a sidecar. No one has put me down for the Old wing I have. The magazine has little for me also with the 1100 but I stay because of the friends I've made in the club. We don't ride as much as we would like due to my wife's medical problems but she likes to ride. I don't go for the pins and patches either no one tries to force it upon me. I am lucky I can still ride as I turn 78 next month. One club member Chet rides a Valkarie , does not have a car and he's 6 months older than I am !

i have 2 things to say, first, GOD BLESS YA dnehasert. may you and your wife have many more to go. glad to hear that a couple their senior years are able to still ride. i think that's fantastic. i try to get my wife to ride with me any chance i can get, but with the medications she's taking, she cant be out in the sun for too long, or in the heat or be in the bike for more than a couple of hours at the most. i sure missed having her with me for the 2 rides down to florida on my GL500i s/w interstate, then on my gl1100A i rode down this past september  . maybe she'll be able to take the ride i have planned this coming march or april?.

is that a.........trailer hitched to your bike that i see in you avatar? ok, 1 statement, now for the 2 questions :?

my next question is.....how does one become a memer of the GWRRA and is it worth it.

stuart.

Our time with GWRRA began to become less then enjoyable back in early 2014. It was becoming a feeling of not being as welcome as we thought we were in our chapter. Things became worse as a few things were pointed out bluntly by a trusted friend, or so I thought. The year that followed things went slowly down hill. As 2015 began all seemed to have smoothed out again. That did not last as in early spring after a chapter get together The same " friend " called me aside and accused me of trying to undercut what he , as Educator, was trying to do. The member then told me to " keep my mouth shut if I didn't like or agree with something ". That ended my association with our chapter and GWRRA. Let me say I did not feel anything he said was justified. It just showed me that somehow he felt that I was a threat to him and his position. I had that feeling for over a year about the Chapter Director now this was just the last thing I needed. Conflict will come up time to time and usually not be any problem. Things had been rocky for over a year and I decided I wanted no more of it. The fact that no other chapter was within about 100 miles of where we live made us to call it a day. GWRRA is in my opinion a great organization with many wonderful and friendly members and we will miss it. The health of my wife is a factor for us deciding to give up touring on our motorcycle otherwise we would keep riding on our own. Trike and all items with it are for sale.

There is no chapter in Oz, but there is one in NZ (?). I belong to GWRRA, and do not receive too many benefits from being a member and am considering the future options when re-up is due in June 2016.

I like to ride with my wife (on her own scoot or on the back of mine), and not usually with a group. Guess we lived in Daytona too long. During bike week and Biketoberfest, we stayed home. Too many wannabee outlaws who had day jobs.

I just joined yesterday. I honestly joined for the Gold book and the rescue coverage.

To be honest I am a little peeved about it already. I signed up and paid yesterday 04/26. My membership shows starting 4/1 and ending 3/31/18 Kinda BS I paid for a year and apparently that is only worth 11 months. Not a good start.....

Member for 7 years but never belong to any chapter. Ran into a couple guys that actually belonged to one and they said it didn't fit their riding lifestyle so they started their own get-togethers. Membership renewal came right around tax time and I blew most of my money on taxes! didn't re-new this year but still plan to because of Stu Oltman with all the tips and sometimes they feature reader rides and new product innovations, so that keeps it interesting. But oh my stars the Wing-Ding stuff is too much. I would rather get together with the folks on this site and have a meet and greet party or swap and sell or something. There is enough members we could fill 2 hotels, maybe more! Make up patches or stickers for the bikes and at a glance wherever we go we would know a GoldwingDocs member..... great ice breaker (most times I never need a reason, I'll talk to anyone though) when we are out and about in an unfamiliar area. What do you think WingAdmin? Well, food for thought! Happy riding.

Yeah, I have been a member since a year after I bought my Goldwing, so that must be seven years now. I just renewed for another two. We have a chapter here where I live and I was part of it for two years, but left it. I did not see eye to eye with many of them. They prejudged myself and a friend that I rode with when we joined their chapter, because we both moved to Goldwings from Harleys, so we both left again. I just did not see where your character was determined by what you rode. I ride with another chapter that is 250 miles from here, on occasion, and they are a more down to earth bunch. I guess it all depends on your tolerance for stupidity, and I don't got none. I renew my membership for the road service plan, Rescue Plus. With an 1800, I am not likely to need it, but it is insurance, and anyone can have a breakdown or accident. Also, I like to be able to be part of that other chapter's functions. They have a campout in September each year that is a hoot. I am not always reminded by them that I came from the Harley crowd and still look like it. Hey, I like my long hair and my beard. Personally, I think well groomed men look funny, LMAO.

Kactus 59, You stated that you would like to attend a gathering of the members of this forum. Well you are certainly invited to the first such gathering which is to be held in Chilicothe, OH, from September 22-24, 2017. You can view the info in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=20&t=36469

We will have the opportunity to meet and kick tires with each other as well as the chance to ride in the Hocking Hills section of Ohio. Of course the trip to and from can be a lot of fun for those of us who get to cross the mountains to get there!

We look forward to seeing you there!

I'm no longer a GWRRA Member, gave it up back in 2012, Soooo, I was wondering -- I need some work done on my 2005 GL-1800. This will be the first time I have need to take it into a shop. I normally do my own oil and tire changes. Would someone be willing to look up a recommended repair shop in the Birmingham area for me. I need someone I can trust.

I'm not a member of GWRRA but I sat in on a meeting of the local chapter last month to hear what they were about. It is Chapter AB-A, and is a pretty big group. They were officially formed in September 1981. I found the members to be very friendly and easy to get along with. I was especially impressed by their ride calendar for the year because they go on about 22 rides that I would like to participate in and about another 10 that I probably couldn't commit the time to, so obviously lots of riding is the name of the game for these guys! They even liked the fact that I have a 1980 GL1100 and not the typical 1800 like everybody else. Another nice feature of this club is that the monthly meeting place is just 10 minutes from my house! I will be joining up with this chapter as soon as my bike is totally done.

Thanks Harvey01 and WingAdmin for the update. Ill be darned if I didn't peruse the forums just a bit more after I posted the idea (which I had been pondering probably for months!) and low and behold a gathering is going to take place!! I mapped the trip out from here on the cape and it is quite a trip, at least 2 days run out. Put the idea up to a buddy of mine that I ride a lot with and just working out particulars. If I don't get there I hope that everyone has tons of fun and it becomes an annual event. Bugs will be worked out and accommodations will be easier to arrange I'm sure. If it isn't in the cards for me this year then future plans to attend will have to be scheduled. Ride safe - Ride often and when in doubt---Throttle out!

After the Sep17 meet-up at Hocking Hills, if it is worthwhile to repeat, then please think of those that are on a fixed income and need to save their shekels (or whatever local currency), and plan for a trip away from home. Perhaps to run into a GWRRA meeting of some sort, just for the ideas one can get. There is someone trying to get an Australian chapter going, but no start this year.

I did re-up this year, but there is little to benefit us in the land of milk and honey, but if ever you are in the neighbourhood, you are quite welcome to join us and there are some very good places to travel.

This topic started back in 2013. I read most the posts that were made and so many of the folks are disgruntled with GWRRA. I personally joined in 1981 and am still a member. I am a LIFETIME MEMBER, now after paying dues for 20 years. Now my membership is free. I really enjoy what GWRRA stands for in their motto: Friends for Fun, Safety, and Knowledge. When I first joined with my 1977 GL1000, I was greeted with open arms. Every meeting, the members would hug or shake your hand when someone showed up for a ride or meeting. I became the Newsletter Editor (because I knew how tom use a typewriter). Most the members had GL1100s then so I was different with my old bike. But, with their help, I learned how to build a tag-along trailer, and replace valve guide seals in my old bike. We did several weekend overnight trips and it was fun. Then I went to Germany for 8 years, thankyou USAF. During that time, I kept up my membership and received Wing World every month. It was through the magazine that I learned of the 1988 GL1500 with WHAT a reverse. I came back from Germany and immediately bought a used GL1100 and then sold it for a 1992 GL1500. For 7 years my friends and I rode every weekend. The conversations over our CBs were endless sharing what we saw while riding to how to fix a problem or new gadget on the bikes. We traveled to several Wing Dings together staying at the same hotel/motels and having fun. Then I bought the first 2001 GL1800 sold in San Antonio back in Dec 2000. Four years later it was totaled by a woman who ran into it while parked at an accident scene. That was a great bike and what she didn't destroy the tow truck dropped it off his truck and did the rest. I was a lifetime member by this time in 2005 but did not replace the bike with another Goldwing. But instead, I began riding Honda's cruisers and Harley's. But, I always wanted another Goldwing. Finally, in 2017 I totaled my Harley and while still on crutches bought a 2005 GL1800 with only 19,749 miles on the clock. I got back into the local Chapter and found that the faces and names have changed but the friendliness had not changed. I don't ride as often as I once did now at 70 years old but, I still look forward to the Friends for Fun, Safety, and Knowledge. I'm looking forward to Wing Ding this year because it has been 16 years since my last attendance in Ft Worth. What is great about Wing Ding is that it is a single place where you can purchase just about anything for your bike or yourself all in one place and get ideas for more to make your riding a Goldwing a great experience.
