Riding a wing on grass

There may not be much to it, but I have to ride my bike for the 1st time on about 50' grass of grass to put it away in the Quonset hut for the winter and was just wondering what precautions, if any, do I have to take? The ground will obviously be quite soft, so wondering about putting the side stand down on the grass as well.

Who has has experience doing this? It'll b my first time.

Carry a 4" x 4" piece of thin plywood you can put under the side stand. this will prevent sinking and tipping.

No sudden or extreme throttle action. Judicious use of the clutch and throttle together will make your trip much more pleasurable.

Riding under the influence of substances requires extreme concentration. I just hope in the 50' you don't forget what you're there for. Just don't forget to put your feet down when you stop! :lol:

Roger all of that, but I don't do substances. Oh, now I get it; u thot I meant riding on 'grass' as in 'weed'. Good one tho! Noper, this grass I b on will be the green green grass of home coming outa the ground.

I just found a guy (more experienced than I am) to ride it for me. (Super nice guy)

Had to look up what a "Quonset hut" is. They are huge! Excellent place to keep your 'Wing for the winter.

Quonset is the style, like a half a culvert. They come in all sizes.

Yes, the are much the same as Nissen huts. There used to be whole village of them near where I live, it was an Italian prisoner of war camp in the war.

Grass is fine, even when soft and wet, you would be surprised. it is when you are coming back out and vehicles after the winter/show etc, have created a 20ft mud patch at the entrance, that gets your adrenaline pumping.
If at first you don't succeed, hide the evidence.

I probly wud b surprised, but I get very timid when it comes to riding on anything that's not asphalt or concrete underneath. Maybe in the spring, I'll test myself, but not now.

To me, riding on grass I find I use the same technique as riding on gravel: keep the speed up a bit (don't crawl along) in order to allow enough gyroscopic force to keep the bike stable. Don't fight the bike when the front wheel is pulled one way or another by the surface; stay loose on the controls and let the bike do what it wants, while guiding it in the direction you want it to go.

Some practicing on a gravel lot and field will give you the confidence to do it.

It's a daily thing for me. I live down 1 mile of ragged, potholed, private road. The Wing handles it every day, and does fine. When it turns to mud, it becomes hairy. The worst is when it really dries out and becomes sugar sand. Sugar sand is okay until it gets deep, then there isn't much you can do. The back tire will propel you through it fine, but that front tire wants to cut it's on track and wash out. You can still go through sugar sand though. Before it gets deep, power through like on a dirt bike. I do it all the time, and it works. Don't go crazy, just roll on a bit more throttle and don't stop. When it gets deep you have two choices. Preferred is to hit the easement (grass in my case) and continue on. No problem at all, and I do about 200 yards of it wet or dry, and it is bumpy terrain. BTW, if you want to power through deep sugar sand. Put both feet down, and just use them like skis. Works fine. Been using these techniques for years, here in Florida. Hope some of this is helpful. BTW, saw a video somewhere, of some South American country, Chili maybe, doing off road training on Wings. Wish I could remember where it was, sorry.

Agree with Jag 39, soft deep sand, I collect 10kg/ 22.5lb in my top box behind the rear wheel makes a big difference of course lowering the tyre pressure to around 1 bar does the same

I have found that riding through slightly taller grass, just enough to hide ruts, makes for some exciting moments. As mentioned, staying loose and fighting the urge to overcorrect is the key to venturing through it. I also found that keeping feet out like outriggers helped, especially riding 2-up, and keeping speed up to stabilize the bike. Now that I transitioned to a trike, my rear-outriggers to a fine job.

Excellent answer, and helpful. I have a shed for my 87 Wing, and it is approx 28.46 feet from where the driveway concrete ends.
I make this trip through the grass many times during riding season. There are times when it has or is raining, and I just take my time and don't over brake, or over steer. Like Scott says, get some practice and gain confidence. It seems that a lack of confidence can make a person more unstable when doing something like this, and practice can thwart off some of that.


I only had a limited amount of space to put my shed in, and it took some practice to both ride on the grass safely, and maneuver the turn into the L cove, and back it into the shed. One may ask "Why don't you just pave the grass from the end of the drive to the shed?". I'm frugal (cheap). But I may do it someday.


So just get some practice, and I'm sure you will be proficient and confident in no time. Well, some time, but not a long time. ;)

Keep in mind this spring that grass is a lot softer than concrete & asphalt.
GoldWings don't get grass stains, they're like 'Wash & Wear'.
So if you drop your Wing on grass, no harm... except to the grass.
Also, Young Frankenstein parody-quote, "PUT.. THE RUTS BACK." :mrgreen:

Maybe find someone who rides on grass and can show you what to expect when the rear wheel breaks loose. Seeing it a few time can UP your confidence knowing what will happen. Rear just squirts out to the side a little and easing off the throttle (not slamming it off) keeps you going forward and upright, the bike will naturally straighten out. Watch some Youtube Flat-Track racers, you'll get the visual gist of it.

It's all about the feel what the tires are doing. "Luke, feel the force of your tires." 8-)

OH! And another suggestion for ya. When your on your Wing and on the grass NOT moving, feet down and raise the throttle a little then pop the clutch 'OUT & IN'. This breaks the tires grip, you'll be surprised how much grip there is, it's not like ice unless the grass is wet.

When I worked in a Yamaha shop we would pivot-turn all the bikes in the TIGHT showroom.
Me being larger than the 2 lanky shop kids, I got all the bigger & Touring bikes to turn.
