forum hacked?

Post by Jim Garrett » Sun Jun 17, 2018 12:38 pm

Am I supposed to be using some kind of translation software? This is the first time I ever saw a language other than English on here.

Looks like some form of advertising scam/hack to me.

Weird. It appears to have only gotten into the GL1000 and GL1500 areas.

Sorry about that everyone.

No, we weren't "hacked." It was a single user, logged in from Russia, who signed up as a new user yesterday, and started posting hundreds of spam messages. Of course, I happened to be away, and got home after a 5 1/2 hour ride last night at 1 am, so I did not check the site before I crashed into bed.

Fortunately, I can blow away this garbage (and the users that create it) with a single click, so it's all gone now. Sorry for the inconvenience - we've never had one this prolific that posted so much without me noticing and taking them out before.

Yeah, I've seen this on other forums. New user signs up and starts spamming away. Kind of a perfect storm with the new user signing up just as WingAdmin tries to take a weekend off.

That will teach ya!

Thanks for all you do here keeping this fantastic site going. :ugeek:

Now I have to go examine some of the other accounts created around then as well - they often create a number of accounts and leave some of them idle as "sleeper cells" - then in a week, month, two months from now, they'll log on and start up again with one of those. I just usually catch them within an hour or two - this time I happened to be nowhere near a computer all day, so...

Oh, thank God - I thought it was just me, that I, alone, had been hacked!! I know, it's not nice to hope others are in the same boat, but "misery loves company", WingAdmin was on top of it, and he nuked it right away.

You have to wonder what the hackers thought they were accomplishing, though - it's hard to imagine that they got anything at all out of it, beyond causing trouble. I suppose that was their goal...

Anyway, I'm SO glad to see English titles on the site this morning...woohoo!!

Can a timer be added to the site, to prevent a single member posting more frequently than say every ten minutes?
A captcha gets evoked when you post more than once per half hour?
A moderator has to review and authorise any new threads from an individual once they create more than two new threads in a day?
There are two types of people in this world, those that can extrapolate from incomplete data,

No apology needed. This "job" is never ending and you deserve some down time like any normal human. In fact you deserve a raise. Give yourself another 10% and a bonus.

LOL! That was almost 40 years ago and I am hard pressed to remember the actual sub-model. I know it was an early one (Model I maybe?) that booted from a cassette tape, didn't even have a floppy drive. I remember having to abbreviate my command syntax since it didn't take much code to exceed 64kb of ram... :geek:

You are absolutely correct. I have dealt with this as Admin of a few other sites I belonged to in the past, which were not motorcycle related. I was surprised to see it happen here. Glad it did not get real bad.
