GL1000 RPM?

Post by Solina Dave » Sat Jun 23, 2018 10:13 am

Hi everyone. I was forced to vacate my apartment rental, due to the owners family re-structuring. So, my life has been in somewhat of a turmoil lately, getting resettled and all. I think that the dust may have settled a bit, and I'm getting my life back. PTL!! Anyway, it's good to be back, and I have a question regarding something that I find myself wondering about, whenever I do it.
When I'm riding my '78 GL1000, in an 80 kmh zone, I leave it in 4th gear. A great deal of my secondary highway riding is zoned at 80 kph. Cruising at 4000 rpm is about 87 kph. Since I may be cruising for many miles at this speed, I'm often tempted to shift into 5th gear. It just seems that that is what I should do. Know what I mean? At 4000 rpm the bike seems livelier when riding, and more responsive when extra instant power is required for a pass, or whatever. But then of course a downshift is always available, in that circumstance, if I'm in 5th gear.
Does anyone else think that this is a good practice, and not harmful to the bike or it's components? Or would it be better to shift into 5th, lowering the rpm, while running in and about this speed range? Obviously, 5th gear would be appropriate at much higher freeway speeds. I'm still getting about 50 mpg. (imp.) 40 mpg (US), so that's not an issue. Any comments? Just curious as to what you may be doing, when you're riding.

Thanks...................Dave

I use 5th gear as soon as practical, even city driving. Can always downshift....

But that's just me...

When I was a working stiff, and riding into Phoenix, AZ everyday on the loops around town, the speed limits were a lot like you are talking about.

IF, traffic is edgy I would leave the '84 gl1200 in 4th gear simply for the same reason you talk of. It is more ready to jump if needed, and slowing down is simply a back off on the throttle.

when things are smooth, I would go to 5th gear....

then I upgraded to a gl1500, and in the same traffic patterns, I would leave it in 4th gear quite often for the same reason. More response when it is needed.

ride it like you want to, the engine will be quite happy at any rpm within its' range.

Redline all the time would not be advised, but you are nowhere near that.
