What to do with an extra Goldwing?

Post by oldmopars » Thu Feb 14, 2019 7:38 pm

I know this may seem like a silly question, but I have 2 Goldwings. My 96 1500 SE and a 1984 Aspencade. The 96 SE is my normal riding bike, the one the is used. I got the 84 on a good deal with an 89 parts bike.(no Title).
I really don't need the 84 and I am not sure if I want to keep it or sell it. It needs a little work, but is overall very nice. I have done a Alternator conversion to it. What it still needs is the shocks and forks rebuilt and probably new tires just due to their age. The seat is also cracked and beat by the sun.
I have ridden it and it seems like a decent bike, but my 96 SE is almost perfect, like new.
I don't know if I should keep it and fix it up, keep it for a spare? Sell it to someone who will love it? Strip it down and turn it into something fun/different? My biggest issue is storage. I only have room for one, so it has to sit outside under a tarp. I just hate to see it go bad and think maybe I should let it go to a good home.
What do you think?
Honestly at this point I would trade it to someone for a set of tires and arm rests for the 96.

Boy, your post sounds like it could have been written by me!
I ride my '99 all the time. My '76 still needs a few things and I hardly ever ride it.
I've thought about selling it and getting something small like a Honda PC-150 scooter to replace it.

To be honest, I have no attachment to the 84, and I am having a hard time learning to love the 96 SE. I am working on it though. It is a nice bike with no problems, I just should have held out for a K1200lt.

My friend has a K12LT. I can see it from my den just sitting on my patio. He is moving to Oregon and had to trailer it to my house since he can't seem to get it started... again! I think that Beemer has been inoperative longer than is has been ridden. Brakes, fuel pump, electrics... But it looks good!

BMW's are funny. I had a 2000 and rode it like I stole it. Did my first Iron Butt SS1000 on it. Like an idiot I traded it on a smaller bike that I no longer own. It was very reliable for me. I had no issue with it other than normal maintenance items. But others have had major issues.
I do know that it really helps if you can work on them yourself. I had to do the clutch on mine. I paid $400 for the parts, everything suggested by BMW and did it in my garage over a 3 day period. If a BMW shop did it, it would have been $3500 or more. Almost the book value of the bike.

Southern California. My buddy will be picking it up in about a month. He said he lill be taking it to an independent shop for a clutch repair before he motors his way up the coast to his new home. He thinks the fuel pump is clogged, which is why it doesn't start. But he'll have to fix the brakes also. The front is leaking so badly that there is no fluid left and the rear seem to be frozen. He hasen't ridden it since 2012!

After I got my 1500, I fully intended to keep my 1100 Aspencade. At first I would trade off between the two. But as time went on, I found myself "choosing" the 1500 more and more, and the 1100 sat, unridden. I would take it out on "mercy rides" just to keep things working in it (worst thing you can do to a bike is not ride it). I finally had to face the fact that my 1100 needed a new owner who would love and ride it.

For me there is not attachment to the bike, I got in a package deal with a 1500 that I thought would work for me. Turns out the 1500 was not what it needed to be for a daily ridden bike. I would need to spend a lot to make it road worthy, so it has become a parts bike for my other 1500 I got after it.
The 1984 1200 is just Extra.

Personally, I'd try to find someone looking to get into their first touring bike, and give them a good deal on it. It's better for the bike to have a new home where it's used & loved, and introduces another owner into the GW fold.

Just a thought....

I'm fortunate to have 3 Wings : A 94A and a '76 LTD here in Phoenix, and a standard '76 stored at my brother's place back in Michigan (my personal Fly N Ride program).
