May I ask a quick favor...

Post by WingAdmin »

...totally unrelated to anything Goldwing related, apart from the fact that this is my wife, and it's my web site.

I'm working on a new web site and YouTube channel for my wife's singing business. She's been singing in retirement homes, nursing homes, VA hospitals, etc. full-time now for over ten years. In order to appease the YouTube SEO gods, I need at least 100 subscribers to her YouTube channel, to allow me to promote its custom URL. Right now as I write this there are 44.

If you could click on the "subscribe" link near the end of this video, it would help me out greatly! You can also subscribe by clicking here: Subscribe to Holly Prather

Lovely voice, and very attractive lady.
I would like to hear her studio recorded through a Large Diaphragm Condenser, although maybe a Ribbon mic would be more appropriate for both her voice, and the material she is singing.

At home I normally use a large diaphragm condenser (decent ribbon mics are a little out of my price range!). This is an example of her recorded with one:

Very pure voice. Scott... many many questions now come to my mind:

Which LDC Mic are you using?
Which pre-amp/audio interface?
What kind of recording space (audio-treatment-wise)?
What software was used to produce the final clip, particularly the source of the reverb?
Is there any EQ applied anywhere in the chain in this example? if so, of what nature, and by analogue or in NLE afterward?

Oh man....that recording was quite a few years ago (11 to be exact). If memory serves...

Mic: Audio-Technica AT-3035 (probably? Don't recall for sure)
Preamp/interface: E-MU 1616M
Recording space: Corner bedroom studios! (our guest room) Portable reflexion filter, some kind of acoustic treatment on rear wall, mic pop filter
Software: Probably...Adobe Audition. I think. No recollection of which reverb was used, could have either been Audition's studio reverb (my most-used reverb plugin in Audition) or it might have been the DSP reverb in the 1616M.
EQ: Probably, and it would have been done afterwards, again in Audition, and probably parametric. I typically will give a small bump in the low end of her voice, and a tiny bit way up top (small Q) to add a bit of sparkle, but not much else.

EDIT: I just went back and listened to that again, and I'm fairly sure the reverb is the 1616M's DSP. I loved that unit, but they stopped making drivers for it after Windows XP. I got it working with Windows 7 with a hack, but no way it would work with Windows 10, so it had to go.

I just noticed that there is a "Skip ahead" to go thru all of her performances.

I got my biggest kick out of the Veteran's Hall where they were doing the Boogie Woogie, and the oldsters all got up on the floor and were dancing to the music.

Saw a lot of smiling faces in the audience who could not dance.

Sorry it's taken time to get back to you Scott, and thank you for the detailed reply. I find this kind of thing fascinating.

The AT3035 is a very interesting Mic... It's more of a medium-diaphragm condenser at only 19mm diameter diaphragm (an electret too), but has a frequency response almost as flat as many SDC's. Nice stated low self noise of 12db, which (if true) beats a lot of LDC's! Not suprised you added a little EQ boost at the top-end, as many budget LDC's tend to have a 3 to 5db lift up at 12KHz, which the AT3035 is completely devoid of!

Your Emu 1616m was I think a very well respected and flexible interface. Lots of IO, and excellent SN ratio. Shame it's no longer viable with Windows 10! Progress eh!

I only dip my toes in audio recording and production with really low-end gear. Like everything in life, there seems to be so much to learn! I can see how people make careers out of it!

I have to record an Irish singer soon, along with Accordion, and Keyboard. For this I've picked up a used Behringer U-phoria UMC404HD quite cheaply, so I can record four phantom-powered mics simultaneously, and a Midi source too. The singer already has a budget LDC, but I'm now hunting for a couple of good value used SDC's or LDC's to use on the accordion. I appreciate if I get LDC's they may need quite some taming at the top end, but may give me more flexibillity in future recording sessions. There are even multi-pattern LDC's kicking around on ebay from time to time for reasonabe sums.

The accordion is also wired for Midi, as is the keyboard, so it would be great if I could capture everthing simultaneously, then I could play to my heart's content with combining Midi synthesised instruments with the live Accordion mic capture.

First I had a Tascam DR40 recorder, and then an Art Dual USB Pre. The tascam will allow up to four channel recording to an SD card using its built-in Electrets plus two XLR's or Line-ins. The Art usb will do two mics with Phantom power, but this has limited gain, and will only do 16bit 44KHz (not that I really need the headroom of the UMC's 24 bit capture or 96KHz).
Anyway, all great fun!!!

I love the Tascam recorders. I have an old DR-05 that has seen a lot of use. I now use a DR-70D for out-of-studio recording, and the audio you are hearing in those videos was recorded on it, captured directly from our mixer board feed (a Yamaha MX10XU). PA is a pair of JBL EON12's.

I now use a Yamaha MG16XU mixer as my audio interface, as I needed something clean and low-noise that could handle lots of inputs even when I'm not actually recording. I may upgrade it to a MG20XU in the future. I like your UMC404HD - Behringer is really killing it with pro audio and synths these days. I had a UMC1820 on my want list for a while, but with my synths having built-in audio interfaces, I haven't needed more than just the channels coming from the mixer. Monitors are a set of JBL 308P's.

I still have the AT-3035, as well as an EV RE20 and a box of sundry other mics. My wife uses a Sennheiser SKM35 paired to an EM10 receiver.

At home I still occasionally use Audition for wav editing (just because I have used it for many years and know it so well) but most everything I now do in Cubase Pro. I have a Yamaha MODX7, Yamaha MX61, Yamaha Reface CS, Roland System-8 and up until a couple weeks ago, a Roland MC-303, which I gave to the son of a friend of mine who is trying to get into dance music. All the keyboards have both MIDI and audio interface over USB, so I can do direct capture without an analog stage.

Actually, I don't think the Reface has audio over USB, but I feed its audio into the A/D input of the MODX so that I can use the MODX's effects on it, so it gets routed over the MODX's USB audio anyway.

This is just a bit of me messing about trying to get the arpeggiators synced on the MODX and System-8:
