How to: YouTube time codes

Post by Rambozo »

I couldn't find any place to really post site questions so I'll try here.
I am looking for a way to post a YouTube link with the t=111 start time code. I either get a non link or the video always starts from the beginning. I have tried a number of options using the v=YOUTUBEID&t=123 and other variations. Or even just using the standard insert URL but the site always detects YouTube URLs and butchers them. Not sure how to get around this. Am I missing the secret handshake or decoder ring?

I seen it done, but I am not learned enough to tell you how to do it.

I don't think it can be done - the site will parse the YouTube video URL to be able to embed it on the page, and it strips out all that stuff, because otherwise people unwittingly post links to playlists or their favorites, or whatever.

The easiest thing is to post the video and then write "skip to 1:31" or whatever in the posting.

Thanks, I was thinking I was losing my touch there for a bit. TinyURL to the rescue. Made an effective workaround.

Just setup the options you want in YouTube, then paste the doctored URL into TinyURL to have it write it as a compressed URL. You don't really need the compression, what you do need it to have the top level domain changed from youtube to tinyurl. That way the site software won't attempt to be "helpful" by extracting just the YouTube ID and stripping everything else out. There are other URL services that would probably work as well, I just have been using Tiny URL for a long time. You won't have the embedded video player, but I think that is a small price to pay for the control you get.
