82 wing

Post by Plumber8939 »

I just bought an 82 wing that the owner took the front panels off and top box. He said he still has them but they are really faded and don't look too good. The bike is a candy wineberry now. Gauges have been replaced because one of the previous owners wife took a hammer to it I've been told. I think he said about 65000 k on it at that time and now has about 7000 on set on bike now. This owner put almost all of those on it in the 6 years he has had it. If weather works with me tonight I will be picking up the bike and parts tonight and riding it home.
My thinking is to sand and use spray cans of paint to change everything to a flat black. I know that bike will never look original no matter what I do but the whole bike is faded and my thinking is an updated colour I'm not a body man and a flat paint will hide stuff but I've done enough in my life it will look ok to most people
What's your thoughts? Good idea? Bad? I'm not working right now and don't have much I can invest in it. And at this age of a bike and current shape I'll never bring the value up to justify spending big dollars

I've seen plenty of older wings painted flat black, and they can look great! My only concern is heat (flat black absorbs a LOT of sun), which can get the ABS soft, but I'd be most worried about that in southern states - not in Edmonton (my brother lives near there), so I think you'd likely be OK in that regard.

There are a lot of shiny black bikes around here and I'm not set of flat black but I know it will hide some impurities that I may have compared to a gloss colour.

Back in the late 90's, a friend of mine (at the time) decided to take spray cans to his 1987 Kawasaki Vulcan. He got pretty creative and painted it in kind of an American flag theme right before the 4th of July. It turned out great. He got a lot of compliments on it. When he wasn't riding it, he kept it inside his garage. That's pretty important for spray paint to last for very long.

Have the wing home and after checking out everything no paint is needed. It will never look like a new bike but I knew that going into it.
