New to me bike. Maybe.--Thoughts/Input

Post by OL_ROAD_DAWG »

I have a 93' with 132,000 miles. I've taken care of her pretty dang good, and she has been very faithful in return.
I found a guy that is ageing away from riding and wants to sell his 94' with a grand total of 38,837,and has had the bike since 1996
Can be bought for $3500 . Well kept bike. Bike is brand new, well almost
Any feedback/input would be greatly appreciated. Price? Why? Resale? Just any thoughts

If it has continued to be run every season until now with associated maintenance that is probably a decent price. In the current market, though, not exactly a 'steal'. If it has been sitting unused a few seasons it will likely need some work to get back in good running shape, then I'd say bargain the price down a few good notches.

It will be difficult to re-sell for any significant profit.

Your '93 at 132k should be nicely broke-in but far from worn out. Maybe worth getting the '94 with fewer miles if you plan on attempting to wear it out instead of the '93. With good maintenance the '93 should still command a decent $ if you were to decide to sell it.

There's merit in keeping the higher mileage bike though. You know her inside and out, what maintenance has been done and what to expect from her. The '94, although lower miles, will be a totally unknown factor, trust not automatically given, trust to be earned.

You hit the nail on the head DenverWinger --Earned Trust. Oh I am going to hit him about the price and see what we can negotiate, that's a given with me. I'm glad you rambled, because I might overlook something I've been pondering on. I've got a kid that wants to step up to a bigger bike in a few years,he is still learning from Pops, maybe this will help lure him away from that Harley thing

With GL1800s in the '03 range going for $5,000 with 50,000 miles, I would think a '94 would be way cheaper than $3,500?

I've decided to pass on that like new bike. The old saying " Can't judge a book by the cover" upon closer inspection this bike is a mess oil like molasses, fork seals gone,RATS,well at least mice, got to some of the wires, weather checked tires, head stem is loose.
Thanx for getting me to thinking. I haven't bought a used bike in awhile.

That's a shame. Someone let that low mileage bike sit and go to hell. Damn.
