78 GL1000 1200 Swap Cafe Racer

Post by Turkeyboy111 »

Here's my quarantine project. She's still missing paint ans some other things before she's rideable. The frame is from a 1978 GL1000, the engine is from a 1985 GL1200, the fork is a 2008 GSXR 1000, the tank is from a 1974 CB 750, and the wheels are from a 1976 GL1000. I've done everything on this bike myself except mount the tires. I've cut and welded the frame to install the rear tail hoop and relocate the tank from under the seat. I've also totally restored the carbs, resurfaced the heads, lapped the valves, replaced the water pump and timing belts, modified the cooling system, made the seat, and made the rear cowl out of sheet metal totally by hand with just a stump and a ball peen. I'm 19 and this is my first project vehicle and bike. Also, before any Goldwing purists shed any tears, the bike was a basket case when I got it (for $600 and a case of Stella!).

Speaking of speed, with 100hp and a ~450lb curb weight, she should eat any Harley for breakfast lunch and dinner!

Yup, and give you change for the tip, too. My 1100 with fairing, trunk and bags does a pretty good job on most stock Hardleys! And that's getting close to a half-ton curb weight.
