Goldwing 1200, Aspencade, 1984

Hi,
In the last few days I have experienced a scary situation with my old wing. I forgot to lift the side stand and began riding. luckily I realized soon enough so I slowed down easily and that was it.
However it may happen again, so my question is, have any one installed any device to prevent this mishap? Or should I start taking a memory pill?
Thanks
Carlos

I did this once on my 1100, and was on the highway at 70 mph when I remembered - looked down, and saw the stand sticking down in the breeze, and my blood ran cold. I slowed down and pulled over, then put it up. People have been catapulted off their bikes by doing just this.

I did two things: I put a "GISH" sticker on my dashboard - kind of like "GUMPS" in an airplane, but where GUMPS is a pre-landing reminder (gas, undercarriage, mixture, prop, switches/seatbelts), GISH was gas (turn on the petcock), instruments (check fuel), sidestand, helmet (strap - I forgot to do it up once or twice).

In addition to this, I mounted a small magnetic reed switch on the sidestand itself, and wired it to a red flashing LED on the dashboard, so whenever the sidestand was down, I had a red flashing light in my face.

Thank you, I will do both.
I am use to placards in the cockpit, (flew for 45 years) and also to flashing red lights.
My experience with the side stand, tells me that it is a silent and potential danger.
Thanks again

Years ago, I had a not-too-bright friend who rode a Moto Guzzi v7.
One really hot day, after stopping at a store for a cold drink, he hopped back on the bike and took off without retracting the side stand.
He was wearing ONLY shorts and sneakers! (Hot day? Not-too-bright?)
The first left hand bend he came to, the stand dug in and shot him off the road to the right.....
....right into the worlds biggest patch of poison ivy!!!
He was in the hospital for several days and he had poison ivy and road rash EVERYWHERE!....
....Yes, including down there!!!

My GL-1500 will kill the engine if I put it in gear with the side stand down.

Ive ridden a '81 850g Suzuki for the last 20 years and have left the side stand down numerous times.
So , I know all about the "dimwit" you talk. Never tossed off the bike but some VERY scary close calls.
I'm sure happy the 1500 I have now has the kill switch cause my luck was gonna run out at some point!

And this is our very own RoadRogue, with a picture of him standing next to his GL1100 in a ditch, the result of leaving his kickstand down: Pay more attention, or install a switch?.....

I've been fortunate that the few times I've left the kickstand down on the 1100 when leaving home in that the rubber pad next to the foot of the kickstand catches the pavement before the steel foot touches the pavement and puts the kickstand up for me before I get more than a couple blocks from home. Kickstand down on the freeway could be a disaster!

I've never had an 1100 or a 1200 but I do know that there is supposed to be a rubber snubber on the end of the side stand.
It is there to catch the ground and help snap the side stand up and out of the way so it doesn't cause an accident.
I guess many people do not know what that thing is for but it did have a purpose.

I looked it up on a parts diagram at Ron Ayres.com, https://www.ronayers.com/oemparts/a/hon ... dal-stands
The part is number 13 in the diagram below and it is still available. It is called RUBBER, STAND, 50548-356-700. It sells for $6.97 from Ron Ayres.
If it were me, I would make sure I had one on my sidestand if I did not have a warning light or shut off switch of some kind.

The rubber tips are on the gl1000 also and I can attest to the fact that they do work.
