Anyone travel with a dog on a Wing?

Post by Quick Cal »

So I recently got a new pup. Well, he's 7 month's old now. A miniature rat terrier. He loves going with me in the truck. All though I have not took him camping yet. But truck camping is coming.

Before I got him I set up the 1200 I had (SOLD) to tow a Coleman Caboose trailer I bought. It towed great but never got to use it. I bought a 1500 in mid stream so to speak. Now I would have to set everything up all again, which I plan on doing.

My problem is I really want to take Wilton (The dog) with me on the Wing. But I just don't know how I could do it safely. I thought about one of those baby carriers that go on your chest. I really don't have anyone I could leave him with for the week end. And I really wouldn't want to.

So you guys got any ideas? Has anyone actually done it? Thanks

Carrying a dog in a trailer would be a really bad idea, thanks to the exhaust pipes just a couple of feet ahead.

How about a dog carrier with screen sides, on the rear seat, maybe bungeed with the closed end down? Close off the bottom several inches, to give some warm area for lying down to sleep.

I did not mean the dog "IN" the trailer.

Something like this would do the trick.

https://www.rockstarpuppyboutique.com/r ... g-carrier/

Just do a Google image search for, dog motorcycle, and you will see a ton of options.
When I was a kid I used to go on rides with my dad and remember seeing a bike with a special dog compartment mounted on top of the trunk with a little windshield and a cloth cover that snapped down with a hole for the dogs head to poke through.

EDIT: Yikes! I didn't notice the cost on that. You might want to shop around a bit. But there are a lot of bags like that. Even Amazon has a ton of them.

This past summer Deb and took a trip to Michigan on the 1500, pulling camper trailer. We camped in Michigan four days, but on trip there and back just stayed in motels.

On the way back we stayed overnight in Topeka, Kansas. Went out to the parking lot that evening to get something out of the trailer and found parked next to us was one of those Can-Am "reverse" trikes with Ohio plates pulling a trailer. It had a large-ish animal carrier strapped to the top of the trailer. Looked pretty secure.

The next morning as we were loading our gear back into the trailer the owner of the Can-Am came out of the motel with her two little dogs and a suitcase. Loaded the suitcase into the trailer and introduced herself. She said she was on her way back home to Ohio after a week in Colorado. I asked how well the dogs fared in the animal carrier on top of the trailer. According to her, they did quite well, ample padding inside the animal carrier. The dogs seemed none-the-worse for the wear and didn't object to getting back into the cage.

The cage on the trailer had the grate-door facing the rear, and far enough away from the bike exhaust that it shouldn't be an issue.

I didn't get any pictures of this rig. It's an idea, but use your best judgement.... :)

Safe motoring, for both you and the dog. :)

Then there was the desert racer in On Any Sunday that just put carpet on his tank and went racing with his dog.

we have been taking our pups with us for years, most of the time they get to ride in a sidecar but we also carry them like this. they don't have any problems riding in the carriers
when our chi pup was little my wife would carry him in a sling made for dogs and it would sit in her lap while riding and had a leash to keep him tethered

The Saddlemen PC3200 works very well with a 13 lb Terrier Mix called Skippy. Your milage may vary depending on your dog's name.
She can be tethered and there are loads of vents, we really like their thoughtfulness in design.

You need to use all the straps, I added 20cm velcro straps around the rear spoiler and a rubber mat on the Topcase lid to keep it from sliding. Added bonus of the velcro around the spoiler: you unstrap the rear straps and can tilt the lid up (without dog of course) without the bag flopping around. That way you only have to undo 2 buckles.

I recently added a seldmade windscreen from a acrylic plate which I formed with a headgun over a metal trashcan. You can slip it through the (on the goldwing) useless Sissybar straps and secure it with cable ties to the front lower D-Rings of the bag. See last picture.

it is an excellent idea.

This year I was looking how I can have my dog and camping together in my travels and I decided a winter project is build a trailer for next summer

Hitch - installed
electrical part - completed
Trailers chassis - bought
case itself - working in progress

I am thinking install two open windows in each side and windows in front to have just light and she can see the outside

what do you think the exhaust pipes? do you think could be a problem for the dog?

Not got a dog, but on rides with local bike club, one member always has his small dog in what looks like a bag bought from a pet shop, removebly attached to tank, zips up around dog's neck so just head sticking out, benefits from shield by windshield. I think the bike was a Pan European, bag did not look home made, looked commercially made.
not in touch with that bike club any more so that's all I can tell you,

Dogs love to travel in the open air of a motorcycle, so even larger dogs will be pretty cooperative. In the 1970s we had a Honda CB750, a 40 pound German Shepard and no kids. I built a rack mounted dog carrier out of an apple box and the bottom half of an old windshield mounted upside down. Our dog loved it and was able to rest her head in the trimmed curve made for the headlight. We took overnight trips of hundreds of miles in Indiana and Michigan then later when we moved back to Maine. The dog had a short leash to keep her from jumping out, which she wanted to do as we reached our destination. Today this would be considered unsafe for the dog, rider and passenger, but the 70s were a different world.

I had Zoe, a 13# Jack Russell, for about 12 years. First I made a back seat carrier for her for my HD Ultra Glide, then redesigned that concept for my HPNA. I tried the nylon carriers on the market but found them too restrictive for her and best suited to the toy breeds under 10# (my opinion, YMMV). The Honda version worked very well and I used it primarily for trips into town to the off-leash dog park. The Harley version had a small windscreen but I think that was more for show than function. Unfortunately she died last Thanksgiving but my next improvement was to have been a fabric windbreaker accross the front bars to block the wind in our S.E. Ohio winter riding season, with temps in the mid-40s to mid-50s. The Honda version was pinned to the hard point attachment for my backrest, and I used a SS screw-lock caribiner on each side underneath to attach it to the rider handles. The "wings" on the back of this dog seat were to prevent her paws/claws from touching the paint of the trunk, as they would have caused damaging scratches. A side benefit of this design was that the front of the seat made for a nice backrest while wearing an armoured jacket.
