Are thieves tracking your car?

Apple has finally released a fairly primitive app for Android phones

https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... ckerdetect

Only 29% of smartphones run iOS, according to StatCounter global stats. It's more important for Android users, who own 70% of the world's phones, to know that Apple has finally released an app to alert them of rogue AirTags that someone is using to track them.

Tracker DetectTracker Detect scans your vicinity for any AirTag that's distant from its owner. The app reports this situation to you as "Unknown AirTag." If the device moves around with you for 10 minutes, you can use the app to make the AirTag beep, possibly helping you locate it. Unfortunately, this bare-bones program doesn't automatically warn you of such devices; you need to run the app every time you might have unknowingly acquired a little digital companion. The lack of an automatic warning is probably why Apple's app is rated only 1.7 out of 5 by Google Play Store users. Auto-alert should be a standard feature of all Android phones. Until then, the app is available on a Play Store page.

For more information, Tracker Detect has been reviewed by Engadget, TechCrunch, SlashGear, ZDNet, and elsewhere.

What should you do if you find an AirTag where it ought not to be? An obvious fix is to simply remove the device's battery. (Do this away from your home or office, so the criminal doesn't know your final location.) It's easy to twist an AirTag's backplate counterclockwise to take out its standard CR2032 watch battery, as illustrated in a MacRumors how-to.

That procedure, however, notifies the AirTag's owner that the tracking device has been disabled. A better fix is to wrap the AirTag in aluminum foil (to temporarily block it from networking with iOS devices), drop the device off at a police station, and ask the officer in charge to subpoena Apple for the account name of the perpetrator. As we saw above, unfortunately, local officials may or may not have the time or experience to do this.

yup,

I pretty sure that our cars won't get tracked, mine is a 2001 Suburban with 230k miles and never been inside a garage, and has two little fender benders on it.

my daughter's is a 2007 Pontiac Vibe, has Rural Mail Carrier signs all over it, a big Rotary Beacon on top, and the right side of it is scratched from top to bottom by mailboxes, trees, etc....

and the front right fender inner liner disappeared in an ice storm a few years ago.

Or the interest. No crime has been committed.

If you're really curious, stake it out. Otherwise, toss it into a passing dump truck.
